Do you put your belt on clockwise (loop to right of fly first) or counterclockwise (loop to left of fly first)?

CCW, and right-handed.

Isn't the direction usually determined by whether the wearer is left- or right-handed?

See, unlike a single earring or the buttons on a suit jacket, I never knew the routing of a belt was governed by gender.

This, although a lot of European garments have buttons reversed on "men's" shirts/pants as well. Coincidence?

The perspective is always from the operator's position.  That would be you as you put your belt on...looking down onto the clock face.

I believe this comes from times gone by, when men needed to be able to draw their swords from the left without getting hung up on clothing.

Maybe he thought it was meant as someone looks at you vs you looking down at it. Kinda like which is the right side of a car? As you sit in it or as you stand in front of it and look at it.

It depends.

Does the tail end continue direction when going through the buckle? If yes, CCW.

Does the belt double back on itself when going through the buckle? If yes, CW.

The tail end of the belt is supposed to finish going CCW.

CCW , but I skip the first loop to the left of the fly.
This allows the buckle to be offset and helps keep the end of the belt off my 2;30 positioned kydex holster.

I want the tail of the belt going CCW at all times, so yes it depends on the belt.  I hate having the tail flap anywhere near my holster.

No particular reason for going counter clockwise, but I did forever.

Then, I got a concealed carry permit and started wearing stuff on the belt on the right, and it suddenly became more convenient to take a holster on and off.

Once in a while I used to wear a belt-attached knife, in that case it was on all day and left side was fine.

Counter.

Except when I was in, the mcmap belt goes clockwise because the buckle makes the end double back, so it appears to be "correct".

It is a royal PITA (being a lefty) when I use a belt holster, but 99% of the time they are clip on. So no big deal.
