A young man tried to mug me in Centennial Park in Nashville.
It was while waiting for my wife to show up for a date.

Afterward I just kept thinking to myself "what if..."

That was when I decided to take responsibility for my safety and the safety of my loved ones.

I had always planned on getting mine . I became highly motivated when an unarmed friend of mine  had his head damn near caved in by some dirtbags armed with pipes.  I have had my permit ever since.

I've been carrying since I was 16 and started delivering pizza in HS.

A few years ago, I decided to make it legal.

Yeah, that's what I get for wanting to see the Parthenon at night.

Here's the funny part, the would-be mugger was a Vandy medical student.

As soon as I got enough money from my first job after college, I bought a PPK/S and gave some BS to the probate judge (in GA) who signed off on my first CCW, that was 1986.  My first run was to the ATM machine at my bank.  Good times

We've since gained our Lifetime CCW's!

Lifetime CCW?

Do they have a non-resident lifetime permit?

Same here. Most people are excited about going to bars at 21. I was excited about buying a handgun and getting a permit.

For me, I came to the conclusion that no one but me is responsible for the safety of me and my family.  The police can't be there to protect me in a quick violent encounter, so I have to take care of it.

after I got stabbed in high school I said It would never happen again!
I lived 2 blocks from a publix and winn dixie shopping center in Palm Bay Fla. back in the 80's where a headcase dude went off the deep end and shot up both shopping centers/ shot a few pedestrians and killed 2 Palm Bay Police Officers while they were reloading...their service revolvers
now that I live in "not so free" Illinois I cant am not legally allowed to legally carry but I do spend a LOT of time going back and forth to the "range" so I can keep one near me in the truck.

Having a brother who use to be in drugs and then rolled on the higher ups when the high school got busted for drugs, damn near shooting several people from said incident, having continued problems with said people. Problems with said brothers wife's babies daddy. Being on ride alongs when people get busted. And knowing the cops can't be around all the time. and not being a fucking sheep!!

On my 18th birthday (Indiana allowed people to get CCW's at 18) I went and did the paperwork.  I have had one every since no matter the state I have lived in.  On a side note, I will not live in a state that does not allow me to carry a pistol.  So I have always carried a gun.

I have drawn my weapon a few times sicne I have received my permit but thankfully never had to fire.

So no real reason, I just always have carried a gun.  It's just who I am.  I carry a knife, pepper spray, and a pistol (or revolver).

Yes, the police caught him.  He was drug addicted, I don't think he needed the money for tuition... his parents paid for that.

Because in my state, if I wanted to take a handgun out of the home (even for range time) you had to have a license...

That, and back in the day, a license made you exempt from the call-in procedure.  Show them your license to carry, and out the door you went.

Stranded with a flat tire in my shiny red Vette in a gas station in a shittly area after the owners closed, waiting for the AAA guy to show.  There were thugs circling the place like sharks and there I was, like a sitting duck.
Now I carry and have run-flats on the Vette.

Hurricane Katrina was one big factor in me getting a CCW.

We all saw how lawless things got.

Plus, I had to do a lot of traveling around getting my wife's green card/citizenship back then. They sent us all over getting it done (New Orleans, Birmingham, Jacksonville). I decided it might not be a bad idea having the ability to protect myself and my loved ones while out and about.

Yup.

ETA - Now that I think about it, my Dad had a LOT to do with it.  His BHP went everywhere with him.  If not on his person, at least in the truck.  I knew where he kept it in the house, where it was in the truck, how it operated, etc... I suppose it was just something that seemed normal for a person who cares about himself, friends, and family.  To this day that BHP is still his companion.  Not really a gun guy, though...

When me and my buddy were assaulted by a machete-wielding psychotic lunatic one day in CO Springs.....unfortunately I was sub-21 at the time and KS didnt have their CCW laws so I wouldn't have been able to carry anyway but that just helped concrete the deal.
