My grandfather had a thing for tough to find cartridges..
25-20 Marlin lever gun 16ga single and an ancient 2x10ga damascus twist shotgun from the Manhattan Arms Co. (very Elmer Fudd) |
.470 NE , Not really unusual , but difficult to find on the shelf for less then $5 a round

.222 Remington Magnum - try finding ammo for that sucker some time!! I haven't seen any commercial ammo for it in at least 10 years. Also have a .257 Roberts. Both are Remington 700's given to me by my dad. Guess I'll have to take up reloading if I ever want to fire the .222 again...

I have a single .30 cal cartridge that fits the Pederson Device used to make the Springfield rifle of WWI into a machine-gun. According to Hatcher's Notebook, which describes the the device in detail, all the devices were destroyed after WWI. The WWII vet and bullet collector who gave it to me said that it is worth about $5.

.358 JDJ Handcannon .............. actually, I sold it recently. Im getting too old for that crap ...
I am considering a 300 Whispoer upper though! does anyone offer factory brass yet? |
6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser
This rifle was given to be by a local gunshop I frequent because no one would buy it because of the ammo. |
If we're talking cartridges, I've got three .30 '03 blanks with a 1904 headstamp. So, they cannot be .30-06 if they were made two years before the '06 was introduced.

7.5 Swiss for me. I got a K31, neat rifle...it was last used in 1956.
6.5x55. I don't think it's that odd as I can find ammo easily.
12.7x44R Swede.
I have to make the cases out of .348 Win brass; trim, fireform, cast bullets only. The rifle was built in 1872 Larry BTW, describe the 6.5/.284. The designation makes no sense. |
Theres a guy in Louisville that sells some loose pinfire cartridges. I was thinking of getting one for my board. My most unusal caliber is 7mm Rem Mag. Iknow. I know. Everone Has one of those.
Didn't make it into a machinegun, but a pistol caliber "carbine" (that was really really long.) The cartridge was basically a long 32ACP, I think. Pretty puny. Nice collector's item, though! |
www.feistyrooster.com/300x221/300x221index.html Check the link at the bottom of the page. This guy is making brass from once fired .223 for $120/1k. I picked up a thousand from him and it looked nice. The .300 Fireball is a versital ctg. that can do alot of different jobs well. |

I try to keep everything in 'standard' calibers that are in current use with military somewhere. 5.56mm, .308, 7.62x39, etc.
The only exception is a 1909 Mauser in 7.65 Arg |
8X56R in a M95/34 Mannlicher
I also have most of the parts for an old Army & Navy single shot in .360 Nitro (that I hope to to rebuild one of these days). |
There are some great old calibers listed here...I love the .348 Winchester and the .32 Winchester special...great oldies! Neat stuff, everybody.
My oddball rounds are the .44 Auto Mag Pistol ( .44 AMP ) and the 6.5 Jap. |
You're absolutely right. I was using the burn-your-house-down ATF definition of 'machine-gun'. |

I just started reloading for this one; Graf's & Sons finally got the brass in. Neat rifle when you can shoot it. |
Interesting - what are you using for bullets? |
I have a custom bullet mould from NEI Handtools that throws a 193 grain .332" cast bullet. I tumble-lube them, since no one makes a lube die that size. I have friends who have bore resizing dies and a ram to install on their press and swage .338" bullets to .331" for these rifles; they say it works really well. Larry |

.357 Rem Max
7 TCU 7BR .32 Auto .32 H&R Mag .41 Rem Mag .32 Winchester Special .35 Remington 8mm Rem Mag. 16ga. A.H. Fox |
7mm Mag is the only "oddball" rifle I own. Everything else is NATO so I can easily find bulk ammo
Edited to add: The 7mm Mag replaced a .264 Win Mag. It was nearly impossible to find factory ammo for it 10 yrs ago. And no, I'm not set up for reloading...can't justify the initial expense when 99% of my shooting is done with military surplus |
My father gave me a CZ52 carbine. It shoots a 7.62x45mm round.

Man, most of these cartridges are common as dirt around here. 6.5 x 55 being rare????
Lets see... 7.62 x 45 - cases from 220 Swift 221 FB 280 Ross - swage bullets too 256 Newton 30 Newton 7.62 Nagant 43 Mauser 7.5 French - before it got popular 7.5 x 55 6.5 for the 1904 Portugese Mauser 11MM Spanish 9mm Largo 9mm Browning Long Probably missed some. Oh Well. I would like to build a falling block chambered for the 8mm Polish Anti-tank round. Don't ask why. That would be the ultimate unusual round. |
I've got a .17 HMR, & a .375 H&H mag. Not to unusual, but they don't kick the same either.
Wow! Thanks. My bore is so bad that cast bullets aren’t going to work, but resizing sounds doable. |
Don't have any... 7.62x39 is as close as I get... Odd caliber = Don't buy it... |
Yep, I learned my lesson all too well. Now I try to stay "normal" too. 45acp, .38spl., 20ga., .50cal for muzzle loaders, more or less normal. But dang the odd ball ctgs. can be fun to research and load for. |
.32 S&W (NOT long) Stupid fuckin' Iver Johnson break-top revolver some guy Gave me.
You dudes know regular cylinder gap is somewhere between .002 and .008, right? This one is .023! Dangerous to shoot! Wear a full face sheild! |
I believe thats what they call a Wall Hanger !!!! My odd ball is the 7.65 Argentine Mauser
