The original is still the best:

Find a box of 357 Hi Vel ammo.  It's hot stuff so watch out!

You will be fine with combination.  The GP100 and Buffalo Bore are my back country pick most of the time.

(.300AAC is a better choice)

Who is going to be the first to make a revolver in this caliber or did I already miss it?

I'd totally buy a 10" 460XVR in 300blk. Fuck the ATF.

buffalo bore and underwood are it, wouldn't hesitate to run both thru my GP100, double tap doesn't get close.

The biggest thing is getting a hard-cast bullet as heavy as you can get.  That will give you penetration through dense muscle and bone in bear country.  Though a 300grn HC in a .44 is probably most adequate for brown bears, that 180 HC should do good enough. I don't think anything walking the earth would survive 2 or 3 rounds of that.

I like the .357; however, if you want more power you really need more bullet.

And when it comes to more bullet, get a  45 Colt.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk and you can shoot 340 grain bullets that will absolutely crush any living target.

9 grains of Unique will provide 880 fps with the 340 grain bullet in a Ruger Blackhawk.  And a hard cast bullet of this weight will shoot through both sides of a buffalo.

And it is still relatively controllable.  More bullet.  Not more velocity

I wonder what that would be like out of a lever gun with a suppressor.

Anything really big the 357 does not have the horsepower to penetrate with a soft point or hollow point bullet. Any expansion and you give up penetration. A solid hard-cast bullet on the heavy side pushed as fast as you can safely.

I had no idea there were so many bears in MO.

158gr hardcast with a gas check will go thru anything I want to shoot with it.  The 180's are good bullets but drop off in range fast.

Does Remington still make those 180gr semi-jacketed hollow points? I know the 158 sjhp load was a handful in my SP101, but it would shoot it.

You could probably stuff chamber inserts into a Judge to get it to run.  Cylinder's long enough.

10 grns of blue dot under a 170 grn hard cast bullet will do anything you need to do for a few cents a round if you load your self.  Pm Me if you want more info

I ran these through my chrono with a 4 " revolver and averaged 1425 fps.

I have a silhouette class load that uses 10.2gr of Blue Dot under a 180gr Hornady XTP bullet.

This is what I load in my .357.

180 gr., 1180 fps.

Good luck finding any though.

I've shot 3 boxes of the Buffalo Boar 180 grain load out of my 6" GP100.

It's a nice potent load- I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a woods defense load.

I'd be willing to bet that the 180 grain hard cast load penetrates just as much ballistic gel as the .44 mag......no data to prove it, though.

Yeah, that's a good point. If I bought a bunch of that Buffalo Bore ammo......would it end up tearing up my GP100 if I shot a bunch of hot rounds through it for practice?

That's 10mm power. Plenty for anything you're going to run into in your area. I've seen a very pissed off, unbroken horse get dropped with 3 rounds of FMJ from a G26. Realistically, you'll be better off with plain old WWB hollow points that you've practiced with and can shoot well rather than an uber magnum load that you haven't used before.

Lol.

No.

Probably wouldn't make it a steady diet for an L-frame Smith, though.

Thought about reloading my own....I currently load really light lead bullet rounds for plinking.  Not sure I want to mess with loading up super hot magnum rounds...I will leave that to the pro's.

Load your own. Just fill that case up with bullseye and a mag primer.  It'll be one hell of a blast.  (Don't do that, it'll blow up, really.)

It's not hard. I started out reloading .375 H&H. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit hesitant when I pulled the trigger

I'd love a .44 mag...but what I have is a .357.  Sounds like I need to give those BB 180 grain hard cast rounds a try!

Which .44 mag load...200gr HP's?  Probably so.  A 340gr hardcast lead bullet at 1400fps?  Not a chance... ;)

I must have done something wrong-I loaded some heavy jacketed bullets(IIRC 200 grain) with a published load of 4227 and was left unimpressed. Haven't decided if they were just a mild load or if I'm just that accustomed to .45-70 recoil.

and .30 vs .45 bore. You'd have to change the barrel to do it right. Rifled chamber inserts suck.
