it should be soon to expire MREs. potato flakes, dried milk, and government cheese. And no, I'm not joking. Why only "soon to expire"? Hell, I remember when I was floating around the gulf with the .nav, onloading stores, and we received case after case of nasty steak. The boxes were stamped "Rejected by California Penal Institution". Thanks fer the steaks... |

Just wait 'til they're paying for the universal health care. This is nothing.

If they want to buy whole milk and white potatoes, get a fuckin job and pay for the shit.

Eons ago, when there was "Thriftway", and food stamps were paper 'money", I was a cashier.
One night, a small child, about 6 or 7, came in alone and bought a candy bar with a $1 food stamp. A few minutes later, the kid came back and bought another candy bar. The third time, I realized that there was a car sitting in the fire lane in front of the store that the kid was shuttling the candy to. At first I thought that tub-o-lard in the car was just lazy and using the kid to get the candy. Then I realized that the kid was buying the cheapest candy to get the most amount of change. The SOB was trying to get enough real money to buy smokes or beer. The fourth time the kid came in, I told him I wouldn't take any more food stamps from him and to tell whom ever was in the car that I knew what they were up to. Kid left, car left. Yeah, I know, cool story. It was like 11pm. on a school night. Kid shoulda been in bed. Instead his low life "parent" has him out cheating the system to feed their addiction. I want to get rid of welfare because of thoes low lives. I want there to be welfare because of those kids. These new rules are fine with me. |

If this is true it is a prime example of why the gubment does not think before they act.
If you can't buy whole milk is that supposed to make you loose weight? As my wifey pointed out newborns can only drink whole milk. |

You guys that are saying this is good thing are as bad as the anti's. I don't like the welfare system either but forget about where the money comes from for a moment. Why should the government be able to tell anyone what they can and can't eat? That's just like them telling us that we can only have gun X or gun Y and not gun Z. I know I didn't like it when Clinton did it, but some people in this country thought it was a great idea. This is the exact same, like it or not. The government telling anyone what they should/shouldn't be able to eat is absolute horseshit! They need to GTFO of our business and let us live our lives. Where do I sign up for my government welfare gun allowance? |

Why ban whole milk? Around here, whole costs the same as 2%.
I say if you get food assistance, it should only be allowed to be used at a state run commissary. And that commissary should offer only the essentials. No sodas, no sugar pops, no candy, nothing that is not a basic need. You don't like that, then don't take the assistance. |

Thats what you call "strings attached" when take government handout. Sure they may grumble about it, but dont expect a backlash, they have been told what to do and how to do it by the gov for so long they are fully trained to deal with any gov BS and find a work around, legal or not. In fact these people are so adept at dealing with gov bureaucracy that companies should look into hiring them to deal with the EPA and state enviro agencies. lol. |

OP, do you have any evidence at all that this is true other than second hand hearsay?

If the government is paying for it, then hell yes, they should be able to regulate it. That's how it works –– you give up your right to run your life when you beg the government to run it for you. |

I could care less that they have taken a couple of items off the approved list. The truth is that the program is as broken and corrupt as everything else our government has had its hand in.
I work as a service technician in the poor side of town, so I get to deal with hood rats and trailer trash on a daily basis, and see first hand exactly how bad the system is. Here in Ga the food stamp/welfare card is a green card with a large peach on it, it is very distinctive, and once you know what it is you can't miss it. Every time I go to the grocery store I see people using them, I would guess that in the part of town I live in more people use it than don't. I haven't really checked, but I am pretty sure that my family would qualify, however I have enough dignity to suck it up and provide for my family on my own, and if I want to use what little I have on white potatoes (whatever the hell they are) and whole milk, that is my business and I am free to do so on my own dime, if you suck from the government tit, you don't have the right to complain about what comes out of the nipple. In my area there are several small convenience/grocery stores, they all accept food stamps, the closest thing to groceries they sell is little one pound bags of sugar and stale candy bars. The way it works in these places is the food stamp recipients go in, they buy a carton of Newports and a case of Heineken or Corona for $150, pay with their food stamps, and the receipt shows that they bought a list of groceries that the store doesn't even sell. As long as the food stamp recipient doesn't mind the government paying grossly inflated prices for their items, the store owners are happy to serve them. There of course are people on food stamps without cars living near reputable stores that actually won't sell them beer and cigarettes on their food stamp card, what these poor deprived individuals do is make deals with rich people (you know, the ones who don't get food stamps) to pay for the rich persons groceries with the food stamp card, and in return the rich person gives the oppressed individual a percentage of the bill in cash. Early in the cycle (the cards are replenished based on the last name of the recipient between the first and fourteenth of the month), say between the tenth and sixteenth of the month everybody has plenty of money on their food stamp card, so credit is sold cheap, an astute and clever buyer can get groceries for as little as 25% of the actual value, towards the end of the month credits get more scarce, and needs get more pressing, so the price of the groceries is usually closer to 50% of actual price. If you are interested in shopping in this fashion all you have to do is be in a poor neighborhood and look like a person who has a family, you will get offers to cut your grocery bill drastically. I bet three times a week a customer or some random person on the street asks me if I want $400 in groceries for $200, or even $100. I have never taken them up, but when you are paying for your own groceries out of your own meager paycheck it does get tempting. |

So, I'm guessing cigarettes and booze are off the list, too, then... They were never on it, but it's easy to buy shit you can't afford when you don't have to pay real money for food to keep you alive. |

Don't know if that means they can buy the ones with red skin or if it means they have to buy yams?? White potatoes.....not new potatoes or red potatoes...but white. Racist card.... |

Anyone remember that article with the enormous fat assed bitches (mother and daughter, both 450+) from Ohio who were bitching that their food stamps were not enough to buy meat? That would just be perfect for this thread!
