Hell, I'm running Vista on a P4 with 2GB RAM, a WEI of 3.4, and it's just fine, including Aero.

Fuck it, I'm foing back to the store, return this nightmare and buy a MAC.

And YES, I turned off all that bullshit that's nothing more than a ram hog. And the security on this version will not allow me open a new tab in IE7. It opens up a new fucking window. And every time I try to go to the next page here and on other boards it opens up in a new page.

Hardware can't handle it?...120 gig hd 3 gig ram dual core processor.

Dude did I fuck up and buy a Dell?

RAM hog?   I'm on a MacBook right now, with 4GB memory.  I have seen it get down to less than 12MB (yes twelve megabytes) of free memory, and it runs fine.

People that bitch that Vista uses a lot of RAM don't understand how it works.  When you load a bunch of programs, they occupy RAM to function.  When you close them, you EXPECT that RAM will be wiped clean and will be available.  But many OSs today do not just simply wipe that RAM clean - they leave it so that if you open the applications again, guess what, they're ALREADY in RAM!  BAM!   However, if that RAM is needed, it will be overwritten as needed.

THUS seeing a lot of RAM being 'used' is not necessarily a bad thing.

Explaining this to people is like trying to explain to a Democrat why Universal Healthcare is a bad idea. Don't bother. Let him go buy his Mac and see the same thing in action; memory prefetching.

heh!

I love it!

there is no huge advantage over vista that would justify doubling hardware specs to get the same performance out of a different OS.

You can get a refund from your computer maker if you don't want the Vista that it came with. HP will give you $200. Google "Vista Refund"

Vista is a spyware operating system that places a digital certificate on your computer and they physically track you and what you do and release (sell) your info to 3rd parties. You can't turn it off.

They also permanently turned on automatic updates. You may think you turned it off, but you can't.

My problem has been with drivers for accesories. I needed a usb to serial adapter..even the ones that say they work with Vista won't work.

Read your license agreement for Vista. The agreement is between you and the computer manufacturer....not Microshaft. They have a right to look in your computer at all programs you use, disable them if they wish.

""By using this software, it is possible that you will also remove or disable software that is not potentially unwanted software.""

One thing that really pee's me off personally is I'm on Guam. Half of what's on Google Video or Youtube I can't watch with Vista because it will pop up and say the media is not available where I'm at....out of the 48 States. That's Vista's Media Rights program doing that.

Every week your Vista program connects to Microsoft to check the time and match your computer to them. Why? I don't care what Microsoft time is...I can set the time myself thank you. I'm just waiting for a hacker to exploit that and surprise alot of people.

""The software is licensed, not sold.  This agreement only gives you some rights to use the software.  The manufacturer or installer and Microsoft reserve all other rights. ""

Such as if Microsoft screwed your computer up running XP and you lost your data....you can claim $5 from Microsoft. Under Vista....you can't even claim $5.

The operating system isn't needing 3gigs of memory and 60gigs of hard drive space for nothing.....there's alot of marketing and spy software tracking you. There is no justification for such hardware needs based upon how little Vista does over XP.

Vista 64 bit runs fine on a Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM; so does Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit.

The only problem I have had is Noteburner - apparently all of the virtual CD drive software requires 32 bit Vista.

By the way, OSX 10.5 has had its share of teething problems too.  Dont fool yourself.

I run Vista 64 Ultimate on my desktop at work.

Vista 32 Ultimate on my work laptop

Vista 32 Ultimate on my home desktop.

No problems at all.  I even use it for all my Remote Server Administration.  (Vista RSAT tools are pretty freakin sweet in my opinion.  Can't wait to raise the domain to native 2008)

IT Manager supporting hundreds of desktops and hundreds of laptops.

That said, I have no plans to upgrade the company to Vista this year.  I can't imagine the screams...  much like this thread.  Not because the OS sucks, but because it is new and different.

I swear you can sit the smartest people in front of a computer and they become dumb, their eyes glaze over and the lose the ability to think.  All they can do is point and grunt out a "where's my E-Mail icon," or "I can't find the internet!"

I Just didnt like my internet speeds, and stability to justify switching from linux.

No go on the MAC, it gave me a hangover headache without the buzz from alcohol.

The shop owner (not a big box store) (local mom and pop place) set it up, turned off a bunch of stuff and even he said it still is doing some freaky stuff it should not be doing.

His tech took a look and came to the conclusion  that for the business applications the company I work for uses and remote access to the corporate server that it would be best to install XP and dual boot.

He gave me instructions on how to install the extra OEM XP PRO disc I have that has never been used. (I bought 5 last year from new egg.)

I'm foing in, if the earth shakes in central Fl this afternoon you will know I failed.

Wow.  Showing your ignorance.  NTP is used by almost every OS, although it can be disabled.  By default, it IS going to be set to one of MS's NTP servers, but it can be changed to one of several public NTP servers.  The Navy runs one, which is the one I usually use.

ALL NTP does is syncs your clock with a public clock.  In the world of networked computers, all machines having the same time is an IMPORANT factor.

And for the "asking permission" fault with vista, you can turn this off. At your own risk.

heres a link, with MANY useful tweaks to make vista 100% better, very simple:

Such as if Microsoft screwed your computer up running XP and you lost your data....you can claim $5 from Microsoft. Under Vista....you can't even claim $5.

The operating system isn't needing 3gigs of memory and 60gigs of hard drive space for nothing.....there's alot of marketing and spy software tracking you. There is no justification for such hardware needs based upon how little Vista does over XP.

That folks is some cosmic sized crazy there.

Let me guess… you also believe in Sasquatch and are a 9/11 Toofer.

You'd think there would be more goodwill towards Microsoft after the billions of dollars they gave out for forwarding emails.

And YES, I turned off all that bullshit that's nothing more than a ram hog. And the security on this version will not allow me open a new tab in IE7.

The security model changed from IE6 to IE7. You can open new tabs in the same security zone in one browser. You can't have multiple tabs in multiple zones in one browser. Helps keep you safe from malware - or do you like malware?

While it does have some teething problems, it's about the same as the XP launch...

Teething problems? It's been out for almost two years.

I'll never understand how so many Americans just accept MS shit.

Because there is nothing wrong with it...

Oh.

That explains all these similar threads.

I can't talk about other people, but I personally run three Windows Vista machines with no problems, and I unofficially troubleshoot three other Vista machines that my friends run.  No major issues to speak of.  If Vista was such a piece of shit, how come I don't have problems with it.....

I like Vista...I don't know whats the problem? Yes it does suck if you try to run on computers older than 2 years though.

I can't live without that automatic search function when you type in a program to execute.

Best part of Vista.

I rarely use the start menu any more.  Also makes searching through outlook a breeze.

You dont have to buy XP, the Vista license entitles you to downgrade licenses as well.  As long as you're only running one at a time on that machine, you're good and can run both in a dual config.  Or you can run XP and go to Vista 10 years from now when you're ready to.

Heres the first link i giggled: Downgrade Iink

The other thing, the place that you said you bought it from, many of those kinds of joints often do a drive clone off of one install.  If thats not done properly, you will have problems.  Also a lot of those places dont have the QC that big comp manufacturers have as well as troubleshooting skills for the hardware.

I have Vista on 2 of my PC's.  One is my DJ computer that i store my media files on when i'm playing gigs, it has 2 1TB drives and about 300,000 files.  File indexing in Vista does an excellent job of locating what i'm looking for.  I've tried Google desktop and other options and the built in Vista index is phenominal for my application.  The second comp I run it on is a Tablet PC, Vista has much better integration for writing than XP did.  Theres also a voice engine where you can just speak into your comp and run it, not sure if anyone tried that before but it isnt too shabby..

Anyhow, Vista isnt going to please everybody, in fact, no OS of any type will.  All of them are going to fall short on at least 1 thing.

If you need to know more about Mac's, i think the folks on the DU forum would know more about it, thats more of an elitest hippy culture than anything.

I think we are getting ready to see a huge shift to Vista 64bit, rumors are floating around that this fall several large PC manufactures are going totally Vista 64 bit.

I figure now that I am starting to see HP computers with Vista 64 bit in Circuit City and other places this is true.
