What makes a sound like this?
I ask because I've heard it. I'm not saying I heard a BF, but I've heard that howl. |

Thanks for sharing this story with us. I don't doubt your story one bit - but I'm hung up on this part. If you were driving 60 mph through the quiet woods, how could he not have heard you coming? You'd think he'd have jumped out of the road long before you got there with your engine roaring at that speed. I have my theory as to who it was, and if I'm right, there IS only one of them. that would explain why there have never been bones. Can you share that theory with us too? Would like to know your theory as well... |

But I know what we saw that night, and it was a 7 foot plus, thousand pound animal who moved with the speed of an olympic runner, had a 45+ inch vert jump, a sub 4 second 40 time and moved like a ghost. I never heard a sound through the open window or sunroof over the ticking engine save the sound of the brush as he cleared it and a thump as he hit the ground on the other side.
I'm very interested in your theory, care to share? |

The original story was interesting and very well, if not too well, written. If it is fiction, then well done! It was at least worth the read.
I try to be a skeptic, but having seen and heard some very unexplainable things in my half-century of hunting in wilderness areas of the west, I have come to the conlusion that many of us who have spent much time in the remote outdoors have had such experiences. I suspect this is true of the native American Indians, who lived close to the land. It's easy to be a skeptic if you spent a sheltered life in the city and seldom ventured off the pavement.

Quoted: Quoted: A couple minutes later I distinctly heard a loud snap of a breaking branch to the left of my camp. I walked to my truck and turned my music off again. I listened intently for at least a minute then I heard a very light rustle of leaves and a twig snap. The sound came from the woods on the other side of a 50 foot long blackberry bush that ended just short of the big old growth tree. About a minute later I heard another soft footfall. Then another. At the time it reminded me of my own sounds when quietly stalking game through the forest. IMO: 1. It didn't want you there. To get you to leave, it chose to get closer and unnerve you 2. The twig breaks and footfalls were intentional to alert you to its presence. If it was in uber stealth mode, it would have been on all fours, and you would have heard and seen nothing 3. It didn't need to see you, but it let you see it up close because that was pretty much the nuclear option of intimidation techniques. If that didn't work, there was not much else for it to do except pitch a noisy fit (growl, thrash trees or vegetation) 4. There's no doubt these are powerful creatures that could cause great harm if they were inclined. Lucky for us, they seem more interested in avoiding us than anything I think sooner or later someone will get a bigfoot on video with a thermal viewer. There is already a report on the BFRO site (Liberty county, Georgia) of one spotted with a thermal viewer during night training at Fort Stewart MuddyDog, is that you? |

<snip> thses stories really fascinate me ! let me ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind. you describe it as the Nehanderthal in the National Geo... was it wearing something ? was it naked ? covered in hair, or hides or nothing ? did it look scared by your arrival ? keep them coming, these stories, true or not are great to read. It was not wearing anything, it was just covered in hair, long brown hair which had different consistency. course, thick and rougher around the body and finer and thinner around the face. The air grew down the arms and onto the hands as well as well onto the face. The center of the face was largely hairless, like a human would be. it looked human, but not like us. It was startled by our arrival, as I came skidding around the corner I was trying to avoid getting wrapped around a tree, and saw it drop into a crouch and kind of flinch as we skidded around the corner. We had come down a long gradual hill, up the other side and at the top of the hill, the road took a sharp right hand, almost hairpin turn. The road was wrapped around a long ridge that started at the corner where the road bent and went up and to the right. The road that he was on, paralleled the ridge. it looked to me that he had come down the ridge, and was crossing the road when we came up and skidded around the corner. My gut feeling is that because the ridge and the hairpin turn shielded that portion of the road from our lights, and engine sound, that we caught him off guard and we skidded around the corner. I was HAULING down that hill and had I not had to climb a steep hill at the other side I would have wrapped around a tree. half way up the hill I saw the turn and started braking trying to get under control so we didn't hit the trees, so as I came up the hill I was off the gas, car was idling and we were moving pretty fast. as we hit the corner I got on the brakes a little more to stay out of the woods and turned and slid around the corner, the lights made that sharp corner, caught motion out of the corner of my eye, thought I was about to hit an elk, and slammed on the brakes. And there he was - bigfoot. |

You'd think he'd have jumped out of the road long before you got there with your engine roaring at that speed. I covered it more in depth in the previous post but we were coming up the other side of the ravine, engine was idling, but we were moving pretty fast, I was trying to brake to get around the upcoming corner safely, and then whipped around the corner at the top of the hill. as you round the corner, you are cutting around the end of a big ridge, which has lots of brush trees etc. I think he heard us coming, was crossing or getting off the road and because I was moving so fast, we hit that corner before he got off the road and surprised him. I was moving pretty fast for those conditions and I don't think he realized that. he flinched and dropped to a crouch as we rounded the corner, as I skidded to the stop he was facing from right to left, his left arm was drawn back, he turned his head sideways and was looking at us. I could see his left side, face, left hip, thighs and left hand/leg feet. He realized we weren't going to hit him, looked as us for a few seconds that seemed like minutes, then took off at what was and is BREATHTAKING speed and agility. lets just say that if any basketball team or football team ever recruits bigfoot (I think it's Cain), that they will never lose. Ever. |

Interesting that you have a spiritual take on it. Reminded me of a book that was written about 20 years ago called "Dwellers". The premise in the novel is that the Squatches are the descendants of the Old Testament Nephalim race. "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days-and also afterward-when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown." ~ Genesis 6:4 (NIV) "We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." ~ Numbers 13:33 (NIV) |

If you did kill one,if there were any others nearby, they would just flee the area. If you got one down, then how do you get a 800 plus pound animal out of the woods? Sometimes, a kid wraps himself in a BROWN blanket and Gramps (idiot) doesn't properly identify his target. Happened in WI last year. MOST hunters are safe. MANY are not. |

I lived about 15 miles from where Gseriesfal claims to have seen bigfoot. i grew up there and walked the woods there at many times. Both day and night.
Never seen bigfoot. My sister claims to have when she was about 9, near the family farm. I think however that she saw a bear. |

Why do these stories always have a part about "the hair on the back of my neck standing up?" I'm pretty sure field biologists don't get a spooky feeling when they are in the vicinity of other undiscovered species. Because these creatures are (lights out flashlight under chin) NOT OF THIS WOORRLLLD. :P |

I'll sound harsch, but maybe decapitating the corpse and takling the head as a proof could be a solution... Now, im sorry, but if these things exists, there is no history of them harming us... and since they are not to be considered as "animals", maybe killing them is not THE thing to do.. |

I posted this one before in the Creepy Story thread. It was originally posted on the Fal Files board: FALaholic # 16051 Old Post October 14, 2006 18:09 Post #41 Back in the winter of 2001 my youngest son and I were on our way from Boise,Idaho to Medford, Oregon. We had taken a car trailer to his old place in Boise in order to haul his non-running Jeep to his new place in Medford. We hit an area of heavy snow in the southern Cascades around 2:00 a.m. It took 45 minutes or so to get down the mountain. We had, of course been drinking coffee to stay alert. About 25 miles west of the pass it became obvious that the last few quarts of coffee had to be drained. We stopped at a wide spot in the road near a summer tourist haunt, deserted in winter. There is a gas station and ice cream joint on the west side of the road, closed this time of year, and no town or settlement within 30 miles. This is tall timber country, and unsettled.Across the road is a small parking area for the ice cream joint. It is paved and about 200 ft.wide and 80 ft.deep. I pulled in and as I stepped out with .45 on hip, it occurred to me in a flash that grabbing the 590 Mossy would be good. As we walked to the far end of the area to be well off the road, the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood on end. The area directly to our front was open with a depth of 50 yards and a width of 100 yards. The night was clear and cold, 8-10 inches of snow on the ground, and with a moon almost full, so we could see quite well. While standing and taking a leak, with son about 15 ft.to my right I saw, as if springing from the earth in front of us across the open area 10 or 12 creatures moving RAPIDLY back and forth in sort of a Thatch weave pattern. These things, not human men, were close to 7 ft.tall, thin, bipedal with long arms, medium length gray fur, and damned fast on their feet. I brought the shotgun up and slid the safety off, as son was drawing his .45. I don't know if I can adequately explain the overwhelming feeling of menace, but here goes. I had been operating on pure instinct since I had stepped from the pickup, the rotten feeling hit me a split second before the things arrived, the feeling?, instinct?, was that we were prey, and subject to a very bad death, and to be slaughtered and eaten, not a logical process, gut feeling and massively overwhelming. As they were moving about in front of us,more appeared and mixed among them, all the while running about fast in front of us. Son and I were backing toward the truck, I WOULD NOT present my back to them, and some of them peeled off right and left in an encirclement movement. They were rolling in fast from the sides now, I could smell and feel their presence. We got to the truck loaded on adrenaline and ready to kill, as we both knew we were in grave danger. We piled into the truck, locked doors. I had keys out and ready, as my butt neared the seat, I had the engine lit and trans. in gear and gas pedal mashed in one motion. Adrenaline is great stuff! As we fled, yes fled, something VERY close by let out a ululating scream of rage, and pain. I believe one or more of the group had gotten really close to us in their pursuit and I ran over the foot of one of them, yeah they were that close. We rolled onto the highway and I told son to watch the bed of the pickup as well as the trailer, he already was indexed to the rear with the shotgun. We hauled ass for at least 20 miles before the feeling of grave danger started to abate. The feeling that nailed both of us, as we discussed soon afterward, was one of being prey, and soon to be slaughtered and eaten. I am not easily led, and neither believe or disbelieve all the bigfoot, ghost and werewolf stuff, in fact I am skeptical. Son was speaking with a coworker about 6 months later who had grown up in Prospect, Oregon, about 30 miles south of Union Creek where the incident took place. He asked Jake if he had ever heard of any strange goings-on in the area. Jake went ashy white and pretty much retold the above tale. He says to avoid the place at night. A family friend, a 25 yr. retired cop not given to flights of fancy and an excellent observer, had a tale very similar from a year before. I told my wife of this event of course, she looked at me at the beginning as though I had developed a 3rd eyeball in the center of my forehead. That was from shock, she did believe me, but did not wish to hear any details. She said the tale gave her chills. Me too, as I write this, hair on back of neck and forearms is sticking up. I have NOT gone back to explore, and would not without a large group of shotgun and flamethrower equipped men with me. Son and I are both sane, sober persons, and not taken to hysteria. We were wide, VERY wide awake as things transpired. We saw and smelled what was there. As a sidebar neither of us heard footfalls from the creatures. They were silent until i hurt one as we were getting the Hell out of there. To my knowledge, and I have researched, there is nothing that matches these creatures, unless one considers old legends and folk tales of were creatures. To conclude, I have to fall back on Elmer Keith's famous line, "Hell,I was there." Best regards, Mike M. edited FalFiler's last name, some spelling/punctuation, and the paragraph breaks (to reflect how they were originally posted.) Dang. I miss muddydog and danc. That 99 page bigfoot thread was epic. |

I have had several PMs asking me to give some additional details about our encounter so I'll post them here. I've posted them before but the get buried in the old posts. my wife, who was my fiance at the time, and I were driving around midway Utah (above Heber) late at night on a Friday looking for a cabin we had been invited to to spend the night with some friends. We got SUPER lost and were just driving around in the woods. I got kinda tired of driving around aimlessly and just decided to get out of there as fast as we could. I wend down a gully, came up the other side about 60 miles an hour and hit a sharp corner I didn't see coming, I slammed on the brakes and slid around the corner in the gravel, as soon as I cleared the corner, there was something HUGE standing in the middle of the road. I slammed on my brakes and slid to a stop. Standing right in front of us, in high beams, was the biggest humanoid I've ever seen. he had dropped into a crouch and half twisted to see us when we came flying around the corner. we'd clearly caught him off guard crossing the road. He was facing right to left and was sideways to us, slightly twisted back to face us. He was maybe 8-9 feet from my face in the high beams. I could clearly see his eyes, teeth, skin and hair. we locked gaze for a few seconds, and in those few seconds I can still remember the details I processed like it was yesterday. Long brown hair, fairly thick overall but very thin on and around the face. not a human face but not ape. the closest thing I can think of is the pictures of Neaderthal's in the National geographic. It looked a LOT more like us (humans) than an ape but the brow was heavy, very heavy jawline, flattened nose, high cheekbones, deep set eyes. The eyes were dark but hard to see the color because they were squinting in the light. the thing was frozen for a few seconds and then it slowly uncrouched just a little bit then took off across the road, three long bounds and then it leapt over this hedge of brush and scrub oak that was maybe seven feet high. It went over arms first, superman style, and never touched the bushes. the important parts of the encounter are: - this thing was 7 feet plus high. I would guess 7'2"-7'3". I can guarantee it's size within a couple of inches because at the time I was an offensive tackle at brigham young university. My best friend was (is) 6'8" and about 435. This thing was MUCH taller than Will. - it was physically enormous. The largest animal I've ever seen that wasn't a moose. it's biceps were literally the size of my thighs. At the time I was 6'5" and about 320. I have big thighs. It's biceps were that size. It's thighs were the size of my waist. I was about a 44" waist. - I have never seen anything move so fast in my life. After BYU, I went to the buffalo bills where I was the second team O tackle and I blocked Bruce Smith on a daily basis for the better part of a year. Bruce is the quickest human I have ever seen. It took me two weeks to even touch Bruce, let alone block him. This thing was easily 2x as fast/quick. I would guess this thing was pushing a 3.7 to 3.9 40 yard dash speed, maybe faster. It was hard to tell because it was so huge. It was so big it might have looked slower than it was moving. It covered an entire road and over some bushes in three steps. - I would guess it weighed 700+ lbs. It was simply massive. Still hard to believe even having seen it in very bright lights. as it ran off, I was terrified. There is something primal about looking at something so close to you that could *CLEARLY* destroy you in a thought. We were in a mazda 626, with an open sunroof, late at night, with a craptacular tanfoglio CZ75 9mm under the seat for protection. This thing could have ripped the roof off, and yanked us out and eaten us if it wanted to. I could not even talk. I was speechless. I finally decided I had hallucinated the entire episode and finally stammered out "did you see that?!" my wife, who had not breathed an iota in the brief time since we'd seen it could only reply "That was a BIGFOOT! Get us the he** out of here!" There was no thought of shooting it, it was too fast, too intelligent and frankly too scary. I floored the accelerator and didn't let up for a mile and a half until I almost wrapped around a tree on another blind corner. I still almost don't believe it sometimes, i have to check with the wife. I don't care if you or anyone else believes it. It simply doesn't matter to me. I can tell you that we were two newly wed, innocent mormon kids who have never had a drink, don't take drugs, and take honesty very seriously out for a drive and we saw a bigfoot. I have my theory as to who it was, and if I'm right, there IS only one of them. that would explain why there have never been bones. You may not believe in bigfoot, but there is at least one of them. Or there was in Midway Utah in the late summer of 1992. I am not sure why I tell people, as invariably people think you are insane, as I would if someone told me the same story, but it is the truth and I (an my wife) have incontrovertible proof for ourselves that there is at least one bigfoot. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't doubt your encounter one bit. |

Old Post October 14, 2006 18:09 Post #41 Backin the winter of 2001 my youngest son and I were on our way fromBoise,Idaho to Medford, Oregon. We had taken a car trailer to his oldplace in Boise in order to haul his non-running Jeep to his new placein Medford. We hit an area of heavy snow in the southern Cascades around2:00 a.m. It took 45 minutes or so to get down the mountain. We had, ofcourse been drinking coffee to stay alert. About 25 miles westof the pass it became obvious that the last few quarts of coffee had tobe drained. We stopped at a wide spot in the road near a summer touristhaunt, deserted in winter. There is a gas station and ice cream joint onthe west side of the road, closed this time of year, and no town orsettlement within 30 miles. This is tall timber country, andunsettled.Across the road is a small parking area for the ice creamjoint. It is paved and about 200 ft.wide and 80 ft.deep. I pulled in andas I stepped out with .45 on hip, it occurred to me in a flash thatgrabbing the 590 Mossy would be good. As we walked to the farend of the area to be well off the road, the hair on my arms and theback of my neck stood on end. The area directly to our front was openwith a depth of 50 yards and a width of 100 yards. The night was clearand cold, 8-10 inches of snow on the ground, and with a moon almostfull, so we could see quite well. While standing and taking a leak, withson about 15 ft.to my right I saw, as if springing from the earth infront of us across the open area 10 or 12 creatures moving RAPIDLY backand forth in sort of a Thatch weave pattern. These things, not humanmen, were close to 7 ft.tall, thin, bipedal with long arms, medium lengthgray fur, and damned fast on their feet. I brought the shotgun up andslid the safety off, as son was drawing his .45. I don't know ifI can adequately explain the overwhelming feeling of menace, but heregoes. I had been operating on pure instinct since I had stepped from thepickup, the rotten feeling hit me a split second before the thingsarrived, the feeling?, instinct?, was that we were prey, and subject to avery bad death, and to be slaughtered and eaten, not a logicalprocess, gut feeling and massively overwhelming. As they weremoving about in front of us,more appeared and mixed among them, all thewhile running about fast in front of us. Son and I were backing towardthe truck, I WOULD NOT present my back to them, and some of them peeledoff right and left in an encirclement movement. They were rolling infast from the sides now, I could smell and feel their presence. We got tothe truck loaded on adrenaline and ready to kill, as we both knew wewere in grave danger. We piled into the truck, locked doors. I had keysout and ready, as my butt neared the seat, I had the engine lit andtrans. in gear and gas pedal mashed in one motion. Adrenaline is greatstuff! As we fled, yes fled, something VERY close by let out a ululatingscream of rage, and pain. I believe one or more of the group had gottenreally close to us in their pursuit and I ran over the foot of one ofthem, yeah they were that close. We rolled onto the highway and I toldson to watch the bed of the pickup as well as the trailer, he alreadywas indexed to the rear with the shotgun. We hauled ass for at least 20miles before the feeling of grave danger started to abate. The feelingthat nailed both of us, as we discussed soon afterward, was one of beingprey, and soon to be slaughtered and eaten. I am not easily led, andneither believe or disbelieve all the bigfoot, ghost and werewolfstuff, in fact I am skeptical. Son was speaking with a coworker about 6months later who had grown up in Prospect, Oregon, about 30 miles southof Union Creek where the incident took place. He asked Jake if he hadever heard of any strange goings-on in the area. Jake went ashy whiteand pretty much retold the above tale. He says to avoid the place atnight. A family friend, a 25 yr. retired cop not given to flights of fancyand an excellent observer, had a tale very similar from a year before. Itold my wife of this event of course, she looked at me at the beginningas though I had developed a 3rd eyeball in the center of myforehead. That was from shock, she did believe me, but did not wish tohear any details. She said the tale gave her chills. Me too, as I writethis, hair on back of neck and forearms is sticking up. I have NOT gone back to explore, and would not without a large group of shotgun and flamethrower equipped men with me. Sonand I are both sane, sober persons, and not taken to hysteria. We werewide, VERY wide awake as things transpired. We saw and smelled what wasthere. As a sidebar neither of us heard footfalls from thecreatures. They were silent until i hurt one as we were getting the Hellout of there. To my knowledge, and I have researched, there isnothing that matches these creatures, unless one considers old legendsand folk tales of were creatures. To conclude, I have to fall back onElmer Keith's famous line, "Hell,I was there." Best regards, Mike M. edited FalFiler's last name, some spelling/punctuation, and the paragraph breaks (to reflect how they were originally posted.) Dang. I miss muddydog and danc. That 99 page bigfoot thread was epic. The one major problem with all of these stories is this: I can't speak for everyone, but given a set of circumstances where I'm experiencing a state of fear that intense and immediate, emptying the magazine isn't an option, it's a biological imperative. And yet none of these stories ever even make mention of anyone TRYING to put one down. If it were "I shot, but it failed to stop", well that's at least something more believable to me than the idea that two armed individuals would flee a pack of supra-humanoids without firing a single round. |

Check the archives for the 99 pg Bigfoot thread. According to ol' MD, an SKS will take down a juvenile 'squatch. The body, however, was dragged out by its companions ASAP. Again, check the archives. |

What makes a sound like this? I ask because I've heard it. I'm not saying I heard a BF, but I've heard that howl. Still no answer? Someone help me out here. I know I heard that howl, I just need to know what made it. FWIW, I've heard the tree knocking too. Give me a hand. All of you that have, by your own admission, spent a lot of time in the woods must surely be able to identify the animal that came from. Help me figure it out. Back in 05 I was out in the Cohutta Wilderness in GA on a solo backpacking trip along the Conasauga River. As I was setting up camp in a clearing I heard tree knocking across the river. No more than 50 meters away. Never saw anything and didnt see anyone for the three days I was in the woods. Interesting stuff. I live near the Cohutta Wildereness. I wouldnt go on a solo anything around there and it doesnt have anything to do with bigfoot either! |
