Jameson? Blech! I agree and so does my protestant (deceased) Grandfather.

Pendleton > Crown Royal > All Others That is where I have to disagree, Pendleton is too sweet.

Besides...comparing an Irish urine/semen/pondwater/wood alcohol mixture strained through a dirty gym sock and labeled as Irish whiskey doesn't hold a candle to any Canadian blend out there.

Apples to oranges.
Pretty much, until you get to Black Bush or Middletons Irish.

Break some of these down "Barney Style" for me as you list them.

Im 37 and have tried , Crown, Jim Beam, Jack, Canadian Mist, Fourty Creek, Wisers.

Yeah, i only took up drinking seriously a few years ago. Ive sorta just stuck with those i mentioned.

OK.

Jack= Tennesee Sour Mash Whisky that tries to taste like Bourboun. Made from distilled sourmash corn

Jim Beam= Bourbon, made from distilled corn

Crown Royal= Whiskey, made from distilled Rye grain

Most Irish Whiskies= Distilled from various grains, mostly Rye, Bushmills BlackBush 3 times distilled =

Irish Malt whiskies= Taste like Scotch whiskeys.

Canadian Mist= Cheap "unrefined" Crown Royal in taste.

Crown Royal Reserve= Smooth enough that you barely need any water or ice.

Crown Royal Extra Rare= Smooth enough to need nothing. Ice to preference.

You shut your whore Protty mouth!

And for the record... just kidding, reliving an argument I once had with a Protestant in an Irish bar as we debated whether we would drink Jamesons or Bushmills.  The final agreement after much screaming is we would graciously drink what the other was buying and then tell each other why their whiskey was shit and why ours was superior.

Good times.

From what I can remember...

Which brings up the question; What do the Jews of Ireland drink?   ....... Tullamore Dew  ......    AKA............. Tullamore Jew..... Safest place in the world to be a Jew is in Ireland.   Also the Whiskey that Irishmen drink to not reveal their religion is "Tullamore Dew" and "Paddy" the cheapest Whiskey in Ireland.

Those who drink Bourbon are like those who suck dick. Once you describe the joys of sucking dick, you will never convince those who like eating pussy the joys of sucking dick. Unless you are pre-disposed to sucking dick.

I have yet to find a Bourbon I like.

You're in Florida and you're thinking about whisky? Man it is still too darn hot for whisky right now, we are still in rum and tequila season.

On the Protestant v. Catholic debate, someone posted the other night about the irony that Jameson's was founded by a Prod and Bushmills was founded by a Catholic.

OP, let me help you out, put off your whisky purchase until at least October, go to the store and buy a good bottle of tequila, take it home put two shots worth in a glass over ice and squeeze one half of a lime into the glass. Then consume while considering what the next whisky you purchase will be.

My bottle of Jameson's must have gone bad on the store shelf.  Everyone seems to love the stuff but my bottle just sits in my cabinet waiting while other bottles come and go.

Lately I've tried Templeton Rye from Iowa.  I'd have to recomend it highly for a more premium spirit.  (Not high end... Just in competition w/ Crown Royal instead of Black Velvet.)

I have to admit if I'm just making a "Rye and 7" I'll use the cheap Black Velvet.

I think you may be getting Irish confused with some of the current American rye whiskeys.

Irish whiskey is produced using mainly barley (malted and unmalted).  Barley grows very well in Ireland (and Scotland), which is why the mashbill for Irish whiskeys contain an overwhelming amount of barley.  It's easier (and cheaper) to use grains that are home-grown.

In fact, the "spice" attributed to many Irish whiskeys results from the use of green (unmalted) barley along with malted barley in Irish whiskeys.  Barley is what gives Irish whiskey its distinctive taste.

To be fair, other grains are used in Irish whiskeys –– mostly corn –– but those are used in smaller proportions than barley.  Corn is used in many of the Coffey and column stills at both Midleton and Cooley distilleries.  Most of the corn used in Irish whiskey must be imported, and a lot of corn comes from the United States.  They've got to pay to ship it across the Atlantic ocean, which adds to the cost.

Quoted:

Irish Malt whiskies= Taste like Scotch whiskeys.

Unless you are speaking about a very specific (and a very small) group of TWO Scottish distilleries (out of over ninety total distilleries in Scotland), I think you may be thinking of something else entirely.

With the exception of the whiskeys produced by Cooley distillery, all other Irish whiskeys are thrice distilled.  Scotch whisky, with the notable exceptions of Auchentoshan and one other Scottish distillery, is generally only twice distilled.

Second, all but two Irish whiskeys do not feature peat.  Only one distillery uses barley dried over peat-fired furnaces, and then only for two specific brands.  Connemara and one other Cooley-distilled whiskey are the brands in question.  All other malt whiskeys (including ones produced by Cooley) use natural gas to dry the barley, which intentionally imparts no peat or phenol flavors into the finished product.  In stark contrast, the Islay and other Highland Scotches feature peat aromas and taste in spades; try a Lagavulin or Ardbeg and you'll see what I mean.  And again, Auchentoshan stands out as possibly the most Irish of the Scotch whiskys in that Auchentoshan is a Lowland distillery and therefore does not use peat to dry its barley.

I will close with the observation that Auchentoshan uses only pot stills to implement their peat-less, triple distilled Scotch whisky.  This is yet another reason why Auchentoshan is the most "Irish" of the Scotch whiskeys, as many famous Irish whiskeys will eschew the use of distillate from Coffey or column stills in favor of the older but more labor intensive pot stills (e.g. Redbreast and Green Spot).

If anything, it's probably better to say that scant few (two) of the ninety Scotch distilleries produces whisky that tastes like a malt Irish whiskey.  Only two Irish malt whiskeys "taste like Scotch whiskys", and while most industry publications regards Connemara highly, it sells a bare fraction volume-wise of the non-peated, thrice distilled Irish whiskeys.  Jameson is the number one Irish whiskey brand, selling over a million cases per year –– no peat and thrice distilled.  Powers Gold Label is the same, and happens to be the number one seller of Irish whiskey in Ireland itself –– so if the Irish nation's opinion means anything, they definitely prefer their style of whiskey over the Scotch.

I'm not a big whiskey or bourbon drinker but for the price, I'll stick to Crown Royal.

Same with scotch. Glenlivet (single malt) or Famous Grouse (blended) work just fine for me.

Now, if you want to drop by my place with a bottle of higher-end stuff, I'll help you get rid of it.

IHMO, Jose Cuervo is the BOTTOM OF THE BARREL  in tequila, and I prefer Jim Beam over Jack Daniels  ANY DAY.
