The KLR 650 is good, heavy and kinda tall but really well suited for what you want to do.

Not smart enough to know - is a 650 substantially more likely to get me in trouble than a 400?

I don't mind starting small then upgrading.

No, they are both single cyl dual sports and the difference between a 650 and 400 when you are talking about one lung is not much.

You might want to consider a Suzuki Intruder.  I'm about your same size and had the same experience (rode dirt bike when I was 13).   My first bike was an 800 Suzuki Intruder.   Shaft driven, low maintenance.   You should be able to find a decent one on craigslist for under $2,500.

Soo many options. My friend has a Honda something dualsport in 450 he'll let me ride. We are about the same size. He's looking to move up after just a couple of years.

Thanks for all the input!

I cringe every time I see that many miles on a used bike. I know they can do more than double that but if they haven't been taken care that's a lot of miles.

This is not a bad price. I've been shopping 1150GS's to keep commuting miles off my 2016 GSA. Most are in the 4-5K range.

BMW Boxers are 300-400K motors.

Just what I need. If I lived, I could make it from my place in Central Oregon to my dad's place in Warrenton in record time!

ETA - seriously 225 HP? Damn.

DRZ-400S or WR250R

Both are easy to find cheap, cheap and easy to work on, fun to ride and you'll be able to get your money back out of them.

KTM RC390
Duke 390 or 690

All are single cylinder bikes.
Top speed not much more than 110mph.
Light and easy to flick around.

You may find the Duke closer to your riding position and style.

The RC390  is an entry level sportbike and is also a great option.

I know. I wish I had my dads R65 so I could chop it up. They seem to fetch a pretty penny.

I can't remember the name of the adventure bikes, a few different motorcycle companies make them.'Tiger'? I think is one of them. They look like fun and might be my next bike.

I am pretty excited about the new Honda but the Tigers seem to be excellent bikes from what I have seen and read.

I bought this as my first bike last year and couldn't be happier.  I have never even been on a dirt bike before, but I did take the class before buying it.  It has more power than most recommend for a first bike, but I found it very manageable and have greatly enjoyed each of the almost 5k miles I have on it now.

My buddy, also a new rider, got an FZ-07 at the same time.  He is extremely happy with it.
