On Tuesday, China’s National Health Commission announced that it had received 291 confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus, with 77 new cases reported on January 20.
According to the National Health Commission, patients have been identified as having the virus in Hubei province — where Wuhan is located (270 cases); Beijing (five cases); Guangdong province (14 cases); and Shanghai (two cases). Suspected cases have also been reported in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi and Shandong provinces. The death toll rose to six Tuesday evening, after the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission confirmed that a 66-year-old male and a 48-year-old female died on January 20. It added that 60 new cases were confirmed by the end of Monday in Wuhan city, where a 15-year-old is the youngest to be infected. Confirmed case in Taiwan Beyond China, the outbreak has so far spread as far as Thailand, Japan and South Korea. Taiwan discovered the island’s first case at Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control said Tuesday. While most of the reason behind us being prepared is earthquakes (most likely natural disaster here in CA), some of it is to give us the ability to self isolate should something like this really take hold. Shut the driveway gate, slap a padlock on it and lay low until the coast is clear. Wife works from home, I own my own business and can push jobs off so we can stay out of circulation for a while if conditions warrant it. That said, it is a crapshoot if government would allow such a thing. I could see them going door to door, rousting both sick and well people from their homes and putting them in one place "for safety". |

Another media "epidemic" where they hype something up and then you never hear about it again. Like Swine/h1n1 flu, Avian flu, SARS, African ebola, and every other overhyped illness that saturates our media for a few weeks until another big news story takes it's place and we forget about it again. |

Gives you something to think about. Let's say it hit Cheyenne with a population of about 60k, and say 10k fall I'll to it, and it maintains the .02 mortality rate. That would be 200 dead. We have one hospital and a few clinics in town, that would be hard on them.
Almost everyone I talked too in the last month or so got the flu that's been going around. |
| Only a little over 62,000 ventilators in the US. This is why a novel respiratory virus could be bad within a few weeks. Not to panic, but watch closely. My wife works in Infectious disease clinic, I am in Admin of 3 hospitals. So, yeah you kinda watch new stuff. |

Initially i posted with a hypothetical transmission rate of 100% of exposed people, which is VERY high(and hard to quantify because, how do you 100% track who was exposed? had sex ? 10 feet? 20 feet? ect) so absolute WORST case is 100%, Measles(one of the most spreadable) has an infection rate of R=16, meaning each infected person will infect 16 susceptible people before they are no longer infectious. BUT since we are in the 1st world something like 99% of us have vaccines(MMR) when we were kids and MOST of us 80% got the booster when we were teenagers. so that R=16 closer to say 1.5. Ebola has only 2. With the novel virus (IE NEW nobody knows what it can do) , the R rate might be 2-5(say HIV, AND highly behavior related), OR might be measles R=16(breathing, touching objects, ect) chickenpox R=17(airborne droplets, so close breathing, touching mucus or saliva, or sores). |
