Especially Black Hawk Down, not just for the gunfights but for the ideals of going out to rescue your comrades. View Quote I liked BHD, but it really glosses over the fuckups in search of presenting the more noble aspects. The real takeaways include: 1.) Try to not become predictable. Doing the same stuff the same way repeatedly allows your enemy to develop countermeasures. 2.) Don't believe your own hype. You will overestimate your own abilities while underestimating your enemy's abilities and you'll end up biting off more than you can chew. 3.) Don't rely on technology to keep you safe. When it fails, you better... 4.) Have something resembling a Plan B in case Plan A (which in this case was reliance upon getting in and out before the militia could react effectively) gets fucked up. Because then maybe you won't have to go out to retrieve the corpses of your comrades. |

I came here expecting to see The Conqueror (1956). The idiot who thought it would be a good idea to cast John Wayne as Genghis Khan should have been banned from movie making. This is supposed the worst WWII movie. I didn't realize Ghenghis Khan fought in WWII? Gee, I must have missed something... The title of the thread is "The worst war film ever made". Where does it say WWII only? |

How could anyone say that "Gods and Generals" was the worst war film ever made? View Quote They watch it? I actually liked it, but mainly because of the subject matter. I totally understand why it is generally hated. I wish The Last Full Measure would get made, but no chance after G&G's performance. |

How are Hacksaw Ridge, We Were Soldiers, or Enemy at the Gates even close to the worst war movie ever made?
I loved all three. |

I don't think it's a bad movie, but We Were Soldiers was pretty schmaltzy.... except for Plumley. He was awesome.

We Were Soldiers.
Did not know that Vietnam had oak trees! The acting was horrible also. |

The actual worst war film ever mad was called "No Mans Land" set in the Bosnian war.
From Wikipedia. No Man's Land Running time 98 minutes Box officeUSD$4,858,869[2] No Man's Land (Bosnian: Nicija zemlja) is a 2001 war film that is set in the midst of the Bosnian war. The film is a parable and marked the debut of Bosnian writer and director Danis Tanovic. It is a co-production among companies in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Italy, France, Belgium and the UK. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001. Plot Two wounded soldiers, a Bosniak (Ciki, portrayed by Branko Ðuric) and a Bosnian Serb (Nino, portrayed by Rene Bitorajac) are caught between their lines in the no man's land, in a struggle for survival. The two soldiers confront each other in a trench, where they wait for dark. They trade insults and even find some common ground. Confounding the situation is another wounded Bosniak soldier (Cera, portrayed by Filip Šovagovic) who wakes from unconsciousness. A land mine had been buried beneath him by the Bosnian Serbs; should he make any move, it would be fatal. A French sergeant (Marchand, portrayed by Georges Siatidis), of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), gets involved in effort to help the three trapped soldiers, despite initial orders to the contrary by high command. UNPROFOR's mission in Bosnia was to guard the humanitarian aid convoys, to remain neutral and act as a mere bystander. Luckily, an English reporter arrives on scene, bringing media pressure to bear that moves the United Nations high command to swing into action to try to save the soldiers. A row between the stressed out and fatigued Ciki and Nino gradually escalates even after being rescued. Eventually, Ciki shoots Nino and is in turn shot by a Peacekeeper. Meanwhile, it is found that the mine cannot be defused. The UNPROFOR high command tries to save face: they lie, saying that Cera has been saved and they leave the area, along with the reporters and everyone else. In reality, Cera is left alone and desolate in the trenches, still immobilized by the mine. Meanwhile, the UNPROFOR commander has arranged false information to be passed to both Bosnian and Serb troops, to make them believe their enemies will be trying to reoccupy the trench at night (which each side would try to counter with an artillery barrage that presumably will kill Cera and obliterate the evidence). How many people in this thread's knowledge of the geography of Vietnam come solely from Coppola and Stone?

Inglorious Basterds. The only war movie that I have ever thrown in the trash. Fucking terrible.

There are very few really good war films.
Most of the worst American ones have already been mentioned, but Saving Private Ryan is horrible. Terrible acting, unlikeable characters, historical inaccuracy. Overrated prolefeed. Band of Brothers is also trash. |

Lone Survivor.
As a fan of We Were Soldiers I am curious why people aren't fans of it. I understand it wasn't historically accurate. Is that the reason? Same with everyone hating on The Green Berets. It's a good flick! |

I'm surprised about how many brought up Thin Red Line.
I actually never really considered it a "War Movie". It's something a bit different....... with an amazing cast and very well done camera work. |

Wind Talkers is the worst by far. I remember one scene Cage shoots 3 times and kills 4 dudes with his pistol.

Windtalkers was horrifying. The Thin Red Line ruined an anticipatory night of sitting down with a bowl of popcorn ready to watch a good war movie. Enemy at the Gates started at the top of the hill and rolled quickly to the bottom by the end of the movie (the kid, Ed Harris, etc.).
I enjoyed We Were Soldiers, Black Hawk Down, SPR, and Band of Brothers. Band of Brothers is top notch in my opinion. The Pacific was pretty good too. BTW, the scenery in We Were Soldiers was fairly accurate (at least from the real pics I've seen of the battle): Here is where it was filmed: http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/w/We_Were_Soldiers.html#.WLVsHVUrK70 |
