Quoted: Ouija boards are not dangerous. Don't believe people who tell you not to scoff at it's power. People can get scared by lots of non existent things. There is no proof that supernatural entities exist, let alone act as a conduit in any way. These encounters are entirely the product of someone's imagination. Believe it or not, I do care. It is a toy. (It's literally made by Hasbro, it's cardboard and plastic) it's a toy, bro. Quoted: Quoted: Ouija boards are dangerous. Don't believe the people who scoff at their power. Being skeptical is healthy and smart, but the "science is god" types are as bad as any 19th Spiritualist hoaxer. Given the scientific communities track record on the global warming myth, COVID 19, UFO's ( I didn't say aliens), multiple genders, dark matter, and ball lightning, maybe they shouldn't be so quick to ridicule other peoples beliefs. Apparently, a twenty dollar bill and a promise to get their paper published will get you an "expert" to scientifically validate whatever bullshit you're pushing. "Science" is losing more and more credibility every year, can't blame people for believing in all manner of weird shit. Welcome to the New Dark Ages. |

Quoted: Right. I've heard of James Randi. Things like that tend not to perform on cue. Not saying there aren't frauds, because there are, but the spirit world is real and it does what it wants to, not what we want it to. Saw that reply coming a mile away. Does that make me some kind of supernatural? |

Never did have a Ouija board, but I did have Kabala when I was a kid. Didn't really use it that much for fortune telling. Quoted: We should do a dare. 5 Pmags to the one that takes a ouija board to a cemetary, then tries to call up something with insults and taunts? They would have to do it for at least a week to give it a chance to work. I live next to a cemetery. Less than 200ft from the first grave.

This thread is making me want to hit up eBay and find me an old Parker Brothers Ouija {trademark} so I can relive part of my childhood. Perhaps we chilluns weren't in the right mind set when the board failed to do anything interesting at all those many years ago. You'd think as many of those things that have been sold over the decades there would be evil spirits and demons standing shoulder to shoulder in everyone's living room by now. |

Quoted: Likely not every attempt to "use" one results in some entity manifesting itself. Some people try to get something on it and don't experience a thing. Got it. Other people literally have their lives ruined. I know it's just a piece of cardboard with some writing on it, but the beings that respond to attempts at communication through it are perfectly happy to make it legit. Automatic writing devices are the same thing, just harder to find. If you "put yourself out there" trying to communicate with something disembodied, you may be surprised to find the universe is not as simple or as nice and neat as you have come to believe. I do not recommend you "try it out." This is horseshit: As a culture, we have gotten so accustomed to scientists discovering "mundane" naturalistic mechanisms behind so many previous mysteries, that we've become extremely prejudicial against anything that might not fit in that box. Between the ideomotor effect (real enough to explain some things, but way too hastily accepted as a catch-all by supposed skeptics), psychological biases, and the prevalence of frauds, I think most people can be forgiven for assuming that paranormal phenomena do not exist. Based on their probability model, most intelligent people will even dismiss their own personal experiences as byproducts of our imagination or psychological/neural imperfections. I've done the same. We are also averse to contradicting consensus reality, and people keeping things to themselves has caused us to drastically underestimate the prevalence of anecdotal "weird shit" ever since the modern era began. Nietzsche had good reason to say "God is dead" long before ordinary people started admitting they had become atheists in large numbers, a hundred years later. The social pressure to "sound sane" hurts our probability model's accuracy a bit. Even with an accurate understanding of prevalence though, most accounts have no hard evidence anyway, and as you say, this stuff doesn't perform on cue. However, you are not wrong. Despite the Randi challenge, there are plenty of phenomena that science has not legitimately explained and probably cannot explain using the tools at our disposal. For instance, during the Marian apparitions at Akita, a solid wooden statue cried tears 101 times, of which over 10 people of different faiths were recorded in attendance on each of 96 of those occasions, and not all the same people. There is WAY more to this story as well. (Caveat: Whatever this is, I do not believe it is of genuinely divine origin.) I find it very likely that our three dimensional corporeal existence limits our perspective of reality in such a way that we cannot scientifically test or access every "natural" phenomena. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Ouija boards, etc. let us crudely tap into things we don't understand, with all the precision and skill of a caveman banging the right rocks together in just the right way to accidentally spark a tinder fire. If this is true, it is possible that other potential forms of life are not so limited, such that their concept of the scientifically testable/exploitable natural world could include spiritual phenomena that we'd currently categorize as paranormal or supernatural superstition. The highest form of technology may be based on principles that are either currently or intrinsically opaque to us, which occult practices crudely interact with in seemingly nonsensical ways. My advice for all the scoffing atheists is, don't play around with the occult. Skepticism is healthy, but arrogance is not. Stay skeptical about the completeness of scientific understanding too. Have enough humility about what you might not understand, not to make a big mistake in the event that you're wrong. Incidentally, there's a pretty old book floating around that advises something similar, a bit more forcefully. |

So they think the "ideomotor" effect is unconsciously making people spell things, like their hands just do this and they don't know they're doing it? That sounds kinda stupid. They may account for subtle movements but you're not going to unconsciously spell stuff. I think that spirits/demons are conscious beings that choose to fuck with people when/where/how they choose, and that sometimes that means through Ouija boards or other overt occultic practices. A purely naturalist scientific perspective couldn't account for bizarre phenomenon because they wouldn't be consistent, repeatable events. But if you think you're dealing with a conscious, aware being(that has it's own agenda) with the ultimate in stealth abilities, i.e. the ability to be entirely undetectable unless it chooses to be, then it makes sense you wouldn't be able fit it into a nice repeatable study. It even makes sense that it would be difficult to record supernatural stuff because the entities themselves know we would want to and could intentionally avoid it and have abilities we have no idea of. It also makes sense that more obvious supernatural stuff occurs in less techy cultures with less recording abilities. At the same time, with CGI and phony supernatural TV shows and stuff, now even if anything real is recorded, it's hard to even know what is true, since almost anything could be faked. It would take one, unquestionably supernatural event to prove such things occur, but now it would take either, tons of overt stuff happening, or something extraordinary, seen by many, and couldn't be faked, in order to be convincing to the wider world. Wow I went down a rabbit trail. |

Quoted: Okay, how many of you guys that are scared of ouija boards change the radio station if stairway to heaven is playing? I change the channel because LED Zepplin sucks. And ouija boards serve as a declaration of your intentions. The same thing could be done with a ritual. We don’t always succeed at whatever we are attempting. Ever been shot down by a chick? No really though, Led Zepplin is terrible. |
