I picked a sword (of course) for a melee weapon.
That being said, if it were a shtf situation I wouldn't go carrying around a sword as an edged weapons fight would be pretty unlikely. I would likely carry a good knife, a machete, small axe, or a hatchet. They have far more utility than a sword does. |

You would need more than just you in order to make this kind of deal fly. I don’t know, watching some of the swordsman who know the right techniques for some of the larger European swords makes me think with the right training it would be terrifying up close. |

Poll fail.
Needs spear as it is the most effective melee weapon in the history of man. |

30" long hickory stick like cops use. Swing it fast and often and a solid hit takes the fight out of anyone.

Sword, because I have been fencing/sword fighting since I was on my college fencing team in 1974.
I am not as fast as I used to be but now, I am more experienced and sneakier. Every time I pick up a sharp well-balanced sword, I feel like the Gascon and his 3 friends rolled into one View Quote |

I voted hatchet. Seems like it would be useful outside of fighting.

I quite literally have all of these.
my first pick would be a machete. As it is probably the most versatile in a "You can only take one scenario." There is a reason they are the most prolific in the third world. A neat choice for other. I have a length of 2/4C SOOW cord about 3 feet long. Imagine a long stick that has the weight and presence of a lead pipe. But with the flexibility of a giant double dildo. |

Considering I have no skill with any of the options, give me spear please. I know the poky part goes forward and keeps bad people away.

I would suggest you get some as an improvised weapon you could keep and not raise suspicion. Back when I bought it. I brought it and some other options to show a female friend. As she was interested in weapons for self defense. Her face was priceless when her young daughter came running up to her with the wire overhead. "WOW LOOK MOMMA! IT'S SO BIG!" |

Bayonet on a rifle
I’m carrying it anyways, doesn’t add much weight Lots of reach compared to anything other than a full on sword Rifle butt also doubles for blunt force trauma But alas I do not carry a bayo or even have a mount on my rifle. If I go through 210 rounds of mk262 and 77 rounds of 124 +p hst. I would be very surprised to survive through that |

Pole arms are the champions of the pre-modern era. Crossbows and firearms barely displaced them at first. How did that work? Were pole arms the weapons of rank and file infantry while officers, cavalry, and artillery types used various flavors of sword? How effective are pole arms outside of the context of units in formation? (My knowledge of military weapons, tactics, and history drops significantly pre-WWI.) |

A truck is a more effective melee weapon than anything in the survey.

Spetnaz shovel and tomahawk stays in my truck now as it is ...

Based on OP's set up, this would be my melee weapon, not my ONLY weapon. So I would probably have cutting tools, pistol, carbine, etc.
In that case I chose "Other".....I would have a 6 foot staff of seasoned iron wood as a staff, about an inch and a 1/2 in OD. |

Don’t ever bring a melee weapon to my gunfight. I’ll end you.
|
|
I'm gonna go with "armored kangaroo wearing a GoPro on his helmet."
Just because I've always wanted one. |
|
A rifle, pistol and shotgun. Which one gets used really depends on distance to the melee.

View Quote They only work in well organized lines, not a "melee" as defined by OPs very realistic question. After the first charge, you're going to want to pull that sword, which is exactly what happened. crossbows and firearms served a totally different infantry purpose from the beginning to end, same as bows, slings, etc. You're playing too many video games. |
