A 26-year-old Victoria man arrested last week in Robstown on misdemeanor charges of public lewdness and disorderly conduct could face more serious charges if authorities determine a dog was sexually assaulted.
District Attorney Carlos Valdez, who received the case on Wednesday, said he is awaiting DNA results taken from the female dog to show whether Eduardo Ramos III had any sexual contact with the animal and is researching possible charges.
“We’re looking into anything from a misdemeanor to a felony for cruelty to an animal,” Valdez said.
Ramos, who is charged with public lewdness and disorderly conduct, was arrested early Sept. 12 by police on County Road 44. He was released from the Nueces County Jail the next day on bond, according to jail officials. Public lewdness is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in county jail and a fine up to $4,000. Disorderly conduct is a Class C misdemeanor that carries up to a $500 fine.
Robstown Police Detective Arturo Gonzalez said officers became suspicious that night when they saw a Ford truck parked by the side of the road.
When they approached, they saw Ramos — naked and sweating profusely — in the driver’s seat. The dog, visibly shaken with its tail between its legs, was in the backseat.
Ramos first told officers at the scene that
the dog was his pet “Jasmine” who he had for a couple months.
Later, he told police he picked up the dog at a local gas station and stopped to make room for the animal in the backseat, Gonzalez said.
“His story does not match what we saw,” Gonzalez said.
The dog, who was taken to a veterinarian clinic by animal control, is being cared for at a local shelter.
