I'm lucky, retirement pay is not taxed in PA. Obviously some states do tax retirees. Is this a new development in Michigan? Is all retiree pay taxed there, or just some ?

If that is a new development then there would be hell to pay, heck, there would be armed rampaging seniors on the streets here if the law was changed and hell to pay for any party that was in charge when the law changed.  And, as for voting, Shit would roll up hill.

For the fixed income crowd, I believe money trumps principles for a lot of them. Some will say you can' t eat principles, and party loyalty goes down the toilet if you tax their pay.

Edit: Now I get it, UAW Motherfuckers were only pension plan not getting taxed by the state, unlike all the other pension plans, so now they are pissed.  Fuck em.  All or none. There should be no exemptions.

All the pensions were not taxed, the Gov wanted more tax dollars, "R"s are just as much a problem as "D"s are when they get greedy fingers. Had nothing to do with unions and everything to do with the govt ["R"] getting their hands on more cash.

Thing is, between the Tea Party and Repub tactics, they did "reach out" to them. To people of color as well.

Obama just promised all of them more.

"Reaching out" only really means "promising stuff" in one way or another. Bear that in mind.

The Right is so far behind the Left right now it isn't even funny. They have the sheep believing that tax cuts are bad, big government is good, and that conservative thought is crazy.

THAT's what we're up against. Generations of people indoctrinated to believe the above.

Sadly, this.

A 'Union-only' tax exemption is about as corrupt and fucked up of a thing as I can imagine.

I left MI for TX in 2008, damn proud too when I recall shit like this.

Fuck MI.  Snyder's only problem is that he isn't doing nearly enough.

Granholm ought to be put on trial for what she did to that state.  I'll bet her fingerprints are on this tax deal - it's just the kind of crony nonsense she loved.

So you are OK with a tax decrease even if it only targets a particular special interest group while everyone else still has to pony up and pay the state's bills?  Put your stamp on that and I'll have nothing to argue since it's just a difference of opinion at that point.  I'm sure the majority of people in the thread can see the inherent corruption and injustice in such an arrangement though.

I'm all for small government and low taxes where they are necessary to run the government but I think everyone should be presented with the bill.  Not just the people who weren't able to get a sweetheart deal from the government.

I know most dislike UAW workers and blame them for many problems.  But try to look at it from their perspective.  They loyally worked, enduring strikes they did not want, sometimes crappy working conditions, and many other things.  And despite some skewed beliefs from those who did not live in the union worker world, union workers do not make as much money or have as many benefits as the haters want to believe.

During the bankruptcy (yes, bankruptcy, just like Romney said should happen) many were forced into early retirement and lost a large portion of the retirement they had been working towards for twenty plus years.   Given jobs are scare in this area, and the limited education and experience of the retirees, coupled with their age, they cannot simply go out and begin another career.

Every year a little bit more of that limited income is being whittled away by deals the unions are making or programs shoved down their throats by government.  When our lovely republican governor slapped a large tax on those pensions, many who had flipped from Democrat to Republican because of the bankruptcy, flipped right back.   I know arf does not like to hear this, but these people have worked hard and were promised much, and now are facing a future with less means than they were planning on having.

If less pay, less benefits, more tax is the new way, that is great.  But the retirees should not be subject to all of it.  They put their time in, worked hard, and planned their futures based on what they fully believed and were promised was protected.  I do not doubt that most here would end up feeling the same when faced with their money being taken away by government.

I am staunchly anti union.  The UAW specifically has outlived its purpose and has become a monster.   But I am NOT anti union worker.  The two are not the same.

They are not the only ones who have worked hard and are now facing a future with less means than they were planning on having.  How fucking stupid are you?

You will need to find someone who gives a fuck to play it

Liberals vote liberal. If the choice is between liberal and libertarian, they will vote liberal. If the choice is between liberal and conservative, they will vote liberal. If the choice is between liberal and moderate, they will vote liberal. It isn't rocket science. We tried to reach the independent and failed to sell our ideas to enough of them. Then there are the 3d party voters. Well, what can ya say? They will never get it no mater what. Then there are those who stayed home. We couldn't get them out to save their own country so in the end Republicans lost. Four years from now the FSA will grow even larger as the economy gets deliberately worse and another Democrat will offer more free stuff and the FSA will lap it up and vote for him too. Welcome to the New America where the working class is the new financial slave. The smart rich will take their job creation elsewhere. They don't need America to make money the FSA does need them to make jobs or they run out of free stuff. It is all about greed and envy but not by the rich or even the upper middle class but by the FSA mentality.

I was hoping for more clarification on state level taxes, since just about every state is different on how they mess with retirements or pensions. (after my initial UAW Rant)

I understand some State/Fire/Police have different pension plans, with some not paying towards Social Security (I had to look that one up, wow) , but, they cannot collect SS benefits later on down the road. What they get is what they get from their employer. Good buddy of mine had that arrangement with local police dept.

Not enought hispanics in Michigan to decide an election. The GOP needs to win Ohio or Michigan to win in 2016. They need to start courting the poor and middle class and explain to them how republican policies will benifit then more than democrat policies.

The republicans can never reach idiots like that. They cut off their noses to spite their face, and destroy this nation in the process.

So you are you saying not to try? You are going to write off 47%?

No. The 47% has written off America.

They don't support Capitalism, they support Socialism. They WANT high taxes - they don't pay income tax anyway so who gives a fuck? They WANT gov't to rob the banks, take over businesses, run all of healthcare and pay their bills.

They don't care about gov't debt because they know they'll never have to pay it and neither will their gov't-dependant kids.

How do you "reach out" to people who are absolutely convinced that whatever bad happens in the economy - it's all because rich people still aren't being taxed enough?

Isnt that pretty much ours as well. Give me a tax decrease. Give me nationwide CCW. Give me a strong military. Give me secure borders. Give me conservative supreme court justices. Both sides vote for their own self interests. So the GOP needs to convince "middle class" midwesterners that GOP policies are better for their interests than Democrat policies.

Most of you are way over thinking this. You could have just stopped at UAW union retiree for most of these guys. They have been voting a straight democrat ticket for 30+ years, and for the most part are very ignorant. They literally hate the very companies that paid their wages and benefits all the years they worked, and in many cases their retirements for the last 10-20 years. They are not able to use logic or reason, and just shut down resorting to the standard lib talking points when confronted with things they do not agree with. They will never be able to see things from an unbiased viewpoint, and will never change.

+1

Until you've actually seen that attitude in person, it's difficult to understand it.  Among the highest paid industrial workers in the world, and they drip with a virulent hatred towards the company that put them there.

It defies reason.

As long as people are comfortable & have their (insert whatever's popular at the time here) they will continue to vote for the person/party that gives them the most "free" stuff.

Live your life & TEACH your children. That is your only hope.
