| Seems like a lot of these guys are only carrying 3 mags on their plate carriers plus one in the gun. I'm sure they've got backups somewhere but does anyone know why they're so downloaded? Weight? I always rolled with at least 6 mags on the vest and one on the gun....then again, I'm not SOF. |

He used the M-1 Carbine a lot in 10th Group, and the pic that was taken just before his fateful last mission (SOG's first cross-border mission into Laos), shows a Garand. He also liked the Swedish K SMG. Most of the pics we have are of him in senior leadership positions as a Company Commander, SF Team Leader, and special missions officer in SOG, so small arms weren't that important to his duty position for most of his career, since he was leading and managing men, weapons, and equipment.

I liked Plaster's use of a tactical airhorn. Pretty damn ballsy to try such a thing and I doubt he tried it again after that. He said things like that would only work once in the book I read since the NVA wouldn't be scared by it as much if at all. A constant creative struggle where lack of imagination could get you killed. |

British Apaches were set up in a way to carry some one like that something about if an Apache went down the crew members could be picked up by the other Apache. the Ah-1 fuck to the no a fuck ton skinnier and barely enough room for the pilot and co pilot. the guys riding the Ah-1 that way balls must be clanging. All of them can. You just need to make sure your balls made of brass don't through the weight and balance off. Helos are finicky like that. |

I pulled this photo from one of Plaster's books and it details the custom camo job SOG-types often used in lieu of tiger stripes. They started with plain-Jane OD-green jungle fatigues and used black spray-paint to create their own patterns. First, they'd spray just the uniforms, then they'd don their combat harnesses and reconnect the pattern, then they'd pull their rucksacks on last, and blend them in. This way, at no point was anything NOT matching, regardless if they had to jettison their packs or strip down to just fatigues. After washing, the fatigues would lose the paint smell and the rip-stop poplin fabric would soften up and the paint would fade ever so slightly. This method proved VERY effective. Guy in the middle has standard OD greens.  |

I don't remember his name, but I have seen the vid on youtube. The video is of DEVGRU jumping the day before the rescue, and is exactly how Matt Bissonette told it in his book. |

I dont carry a spare pistol mag most of the time. Just like everything else, situation/terrain dictate. Most of the time we roll in 30,000 pound armored trucks or at least atv's/side by sides, and the trucks dont mind the weight of a go bag. If you know you're going looking for a fight away from the trucks, carry more mags, but keep in mind that ounces make pounds and the mountains in eastern afg are no joke to walk up. He is "Phil" as mentioned in the book No Easy Day. He was wounded or injured (can't remember which) and that made MB team leader. Speaking of MB, here are some pics from him:
