Me and my son in Baghdad in 04', when he was with 1st CAV and me with 5th SFGA.

Later before I retired he finished SFQC in 07' and at his first Regimental Beret formation (I was a Robin Sage instructor then).

He was slated to be in Bahgdad with me in a few months but he is now going to SWC.

That brings back memories as we (1/10th SF dive team, Bad Tolz) used to train with SEAL team 2 in Machrihanish/Campbelltown Scotland.  Used to dive, sub ops, and even did a Fulton/Skyhook recovery out in the Irish Sea at dusk.  This was back in the late 80s just before the First Gulf War.  SEALS were carrying CAR15s, S&W 59s and 686s (and may have had the new 226) and we had M16A2s and M1911A1s (we did bring some East German AK74s, (IIRC MPi-AKS-74N) my first time with the 5.45mm)

Saw the Fulton extraction system used the first time during Bright Star 85 in Egypt.  Next time IIRC happened spring of 89', SF dive team working with SEAL Team 2 there.  MC-130 came in and airdropped to us a bundle of helium, deflated ballon and line.  Two of us, one SEAL and myself (SF) were in a Avon rubber boat with a 200lb sand bag in the bow.  SEAL was steadying the bag while I kept the bow into the wind.  Helium balloon was up and waiting on MC-130 to come pick up.  Line just clipped the pinchers on the MC130 Talon, lifted the bag up couple feet and back and dropped it right in my lap!  We went back to the RHIBs, got another balloon inflated, checked the lights on the line which didn't work as it was getting dusk.  Bunched together some chemlites where the lights were and set that one up for a second try.  This time the SEAL worked the outboard motor and I steadied the bag.  Sun was setting and only had about 15 mins of light left when the bird came in and picked up the line.  Just as it connected the line, I spread eagle in the bow letting the bag go.  Next thing I saw was a very bright blue light come down the line, arch over to me and zap my butt with static electricity!  Sand bag did get picked up and way the bird went back to England.  Never wanted to do that again.

not pictures of that op but of the MC-130 and Fulton/Skyhook system.  If you remember John Waynes movie the Green Berets, that's how they got the captured General out.  System has since been phased out.

Ol' Sugar Foot himself. I can't wait to write about him and this mission in the sequel to Gentle Propositions.

I totally remember the Skyhook scene in The Green Berets; great film, and I kidded about it some in my book.

So when you and this ST2 cat were working the Skyhook extraction, it was just a sandbag they picked up?

We did SPIES extraction in my 2nd Scout Sniper Platoon in Korea.  I think STABO had been replaced with it many years before.

Pics of some other unit in recent times.

Number of lines.  STABO was basically two 120' repell ropes, one per shoulder on each man.  4 man are also at the same height.  SPIES is basically your fast rope that each man hooks into and are hooked in at different vertical locations.

  Go on.

I totally remember the Skyhook scene in The Green Berets; great film, and I kidded about it some in my book.

So when you and this ST2 cat were working the Skyhook extraction, it was just a sandbag they picked up?

Yes, 200lb sandbag.

Number of lines.  STABO was basically two 120' repell ropes, one per shoulder on each man.  4 man are also at the same height.  SPIES is basically your fast rope that each man hooks into and are hooked in at different vertical locations.

We did SPIES extraction in my 2nd Scout Sniper Platoon in Korea.  I think STABO had been replaced with it many years before.

Pics of some other unit in recent times.

What's the difference between SPIES and STABO?

STABO also used a yoke that "split" the rope to allow it to snap in both shoulders for each man. The harness used a standard GI M-1956 pistol belt and became part of the combat loadout for the guy wearing it. They'd just unhook the seat straps and fold them back until it came time to ride it out. It may have been designed for only two guys to use per helicopter, but I've seen photos of SOG dudes coming out four at a time with their arms locked to keep from smashing into each other. Gotta do whatcha gotta do when Charlie's breathing down your neck.

Funny that's what people key in on. I'd figure all the explosives might be a more interesting detail.

Whatever the case, that dude has decided he is pretty much getting in anywhere he wants to go...

Great Machinegun.  Ours was blown up in an IED sometime around 2010 but got rebuilt.  I carried one in my truck as an additional dismounted "assault gun" but I also fiddled with the drums and found the magic number of rounds each one could be loaded to and still function.  Bitch of it is that Singapore has such a terrible Child labor record that it is next to impossible (at least at my level) to get any additional parts to support the guns.  We had something like 6 of the drums but our gun didn't have any rails on it so it was daytime/ironsight only or walk it in with tracers.  Also the plastic cassette drums are cranky after a while and shouldn't really be trusted to function when fully loaded.  We did get the specs on the magazine cuts on the Ultimax and had some M4 mags modded so we could get at least a little more use out of them.  Super controllable but it does suck ass to have to jam the mags.  I would seriously consider modding some D60s if I were going to be able to use it again.
