The program was tested for several hours today. We had one little accident where the limiter switch part of the program got messed up and didn't stop one of the doors. It did minor damage to the inside skin of the door in one spot that we quickly fixed. TopMen spent hours rewriting the code, then testing it. It finally completed all of the tests successfully, so tomorrow we get real time again for tests. Now, when the power goes out, the real time clock will pick up where the program left off and no reset will be necessary. ETA: The arduino was again trying to make decisions for itself. It refused to talk to the PC....ever, even though the PC would talk to another test unit. They updated drivers, all kinds of things but it would never work. The Mac also had teoubles, then it didnt. 
TopMen found this hilarious, as his instructor was giving him shit about his Mac not working. The PC never did work.  Were any coding flaws found with the debug output, or has the debugging output only caused complications? Once it is working properly, comment out the debug lines except for the bare minimum where problems occur (at door close/open). Has TopMen done an AnalogRead of the Current sense inputs on A4 and a5 (or was it 2 and 3?) on the board, or does that clone board not have those connected? Catching that should be a backup to prevent the actuator from crushing itself again if the 'typical values' are known. I'd really suggest setting up a second Arduino in the lab with the same motor driver board and clock, hooked to the 'spare' two actuators for debugging and testing, use a big spring to simulate door load (or a brick). That way when it's all working, there's a ready to go spare system to plop in if the display one stops working as well. |

Guns...I'm far from a code guy, having only done the minimum required programming classes in engineering school. I was very much a brute for coder and my programs were usually much simple, but much much longer than others in my class that were smarter and more talented. So with that disclaimer, how does the controller know the doors are "closed" based on how Top Men has it set up today? Is there some positive feedback from actuator position that is interpreted as full open and full closed? Back to our discussion a while ago where I was concerned about the weight of the doors when inverted and having the actuators only on the side closest to the tail, I wonder if some of the door flex may be leading to the inconsistency in position when closed. The magnets are supposed to help with that, but thinking that some of the binding you are talking about is coming from door and frame flex as the entire structure settles after being hung in its final state. The limited experience I have with machines is that when you want to verify something is closed like this, that a limit or proximity switch is usually included to positively confirm closure, and also check with what other parts of the system are saying. So not wanting to add further complexity, but wondering if as it stands, the program is relying 100% on the actuator position to determine the doors are "closed" and some of the variability and flex in the system is giving it periodic fits, to the point of gumming up the coding loop. It may be that I'm a mile off on what is happening, but to my very simple mind it seems to be a plausible explanation. It also might be Occam's Razor here too... The weight of the doors really is pretty minimal. They are staying in shape when closed, we don't need the magnets we talked about. It was the friction that was causing the problems. Yesterday, the problem came from trying to incorporate the real time clock into the code. This has been a whole new ball of wax. Since it now uses real time to determine if the doors are supposed to be open or closed, it created a couple minor code problems. He had to tell it to check for time once per minute, as that had caused the arduino to continue to try to close the doors after the switches had been hit, and the time had run out. |

This was my suggestion too, but they still think it's a laptop/software interface glitch. The Mac app supposedly isn't as well done and causes the mac to shut down the USB port. I'm not sure what their excuse is for why it won't interact with the pc. Quoted:

I'm about to turn arfcom loose on the mission patches. I believe we have plenty for all.
I have a young man who has volunteered  to collect orders via email. I would post his email (his gmail address)here and those wishing to purchase a patch for $6 would send him the request with their mailing address.
He would address the envelopes and keep an up to date list of all requests. It would be an honor system. We would send the patches out to arfcommers and when they received them, they can send the $6 back via snail mail. Anyone see any problems with this? Exposing his gmail? |

Just got an update from TopMen. Doors opened again on time tonight at 8:49. This, even after unplugging and going throttle up with the installed power supply. 
He's pretty proud tonight. 
Hopefully the closing at 2:10 will go smoothly, cause we won't be there to monitor it.

Slight problem this morning.....
It didn't close at 2:20, or it did, and it reopened before it should. Anyway....probably a minor error in the code again that will need addressed. Display contents are all in the box this morning, except the G.I.Joe Commemorative box; it's too deep, and there isn't enough room if we include the Wikipedia articles about Columbia. I'll post photos hopefully before we put the top on it, so if changes need to be made we can do it before it's sealed down. |
Pictures are done. Many students forgot to wear their shirts.  Ugg. Some forgot to even come down, even with an all call.  I probably did not pick the right angle. I pretty much failed on that.
TopMen thinks he has an idea of what happened with the code last night. It could be as simple as not adding "00" after 2, or before "0" in front of it. Display case is finished and complete. It looks very nice.

People who managed to wear their shirts today.... Principal and Custodian could not be there.

That really is spectacular. I thought the u-boat would be hard to top. Perhaps it's the subject matter, a favorite of mine, but the entire package is the most impressive thing I've seen in a long, long time.

I would guess this would be in the top 10 projects completed by any high schools in the US for 2017. Probably higher, but who knows, some class probably built a house for homeless people. The way that this display contains the main focus, but also the murals and wall displays, is amazing, and you and your students deserve amazing praise.
I am disappointed that no one in ARFCOM was able to find a good NASA contact. I tried... I sent out a lot of emails, facebook messages, and twitter. No responses, that I am aware of. Has anyone considered contacting your Congressional Reps or Senators, or your Governor, or State Sec of Education? This might be a path to some NASA contacts? |

Here is the email for ordering Mission Patches [email protected] Send an email requesting a patch with your shipping address, and your arfcom name. When we get yours shipped, we will send you an email. We are going to do this on the honor system, and you can send funds back to the school using the return address. Just add PHS Art Dept to the address. We will take checks and cash. $6.00 is the cost, and includes shipping. They are gone when they are gone, and this will be first come first serve. My student will keep track of who orders first. I will update the thread with info as I get it from him. I think we have a few over 50, so there should be plenty.
