Actually I'm more comfortable with a handgun in the house than a long gun; house gun is a G19 with a Streamlight on it.  I can maneuver better and I have a free hand for opening doors, using a separate flashlight or pushing someone back so I can empty the mag into them.  Outside I generally grab a carbine or shotgun, whichever I have handy.  I practice more with a handgun than a rifle since I carry one almost every day (when I'm in the US); I don't carry a rifle everwhere.

Anyone ever regret bringing too much gun to a gunfight?

You can maneuver just fine with an AR if you practice - especially with known rooms. With a sling, you don't have just one free hand - you have two free hands. And a weapon mounted light makes a big difference.

I hear things go bump in the night every night. Some are pretty dang loud, it's been this way for yrs.
I stopped going to check, I just continue to lay in bed.

Sometimes it's even super loud, bang, crank, ding.
I just lay there.

Depends on the situation...

Pistol = Give or take 15 rounds. .308 = 50 round drum.

Reminds me of the old saying, "whoever has the last bullet wins".

9mm could graze a leg/arm and the attacker could keep advancing. .308 and it's pretty much game over.

Rifle is best. Then shotgun. Then pistol.
Suppressed 300blk sbr is my go to. 30 rounds of Barnes black tips.

The terminal performance of 5.56 is far greater than any pistol caliber.
The 5.56 is less likely to over penetrate barriers, such as doors, furniture, and walls.
I can have 60 rounds of 5.56 on the weapon by coupling 2 mags.

The advantages of having a 5.56 carbine with a light, red dot, and sling are far greater than the issue of it's length.
Even more so if it is a suppressed SBR.

FPNI

The story goes, the old sherif was at a community party. A woman asked him why he had his pistol. "Are you expecting trouble?" "No" he said, "if I was expecting trouble I would have brought a rifle."

I'm pretty happy with my pistol when things go bump in the night. It lets me have a hand free to open doors and use railings on stairs. When I have a smaller carbine finished I'll probably use that instead, but until then my pistol does the job just fine.

Noise outside the home is the premise for this thread.

Do you exit the door far from the sound and circle around?

Does your house have exterior flood lights, motion activated or switch activated?

Dogs have been brought up, normally it is the dogs doing their, "hey you gotta come see what we found" bark that makes me take a look at what is going on in the yard at night.  They have many barks, but few require me to go see what is going on.

Depending on what you find, if you need to use a cell phone to call the police how are you going to handle your rifle or handgun or belt fed, I may not have covered all options but those are the ones that stuck out while skimming the thread?

Heck, having the remote for the car and setting off its "emergency" button so the headlights flash has helped someone in the past here, headlights lit up kids sneaking around in driveway or something I think.  Been a while.

And if you actually read all this, why is your answer not to sit at the desk and check camera footage to see who is in your yard and then if you wish to go outside to don your nightvision equipment, if it is actually dark enough, and go surprise someone sneaking around on your property?

A pistol is for whipping them while you get a rifle to butt stroke them.

If the objective is to be able to stop all hostile action from an assailant then a rifle or shotgun is the preferred tool. Lots of people have taken multiple hits from pistols and continued to fight. People are much more likely to be incapacitated after getting shot by a long gun. Handguns are convenient to carry around but aren't that great at stopping people. Rifles are good at stopping people but inconvenient to carry around. If you aren't trying to conceal anything and you aren't carrying it around all day then a long gun does just about everything better.
