After a career in law enforcement I spent lots of time waiting in court rooms...two funny ones I remember: 1. Woman was waiting for her probation violation hearing. As she sat at the attorney table the judge came out and even before her case was called, as he was sitting down the judge said "I knew I should have sent you to prison the first time I saw you. Now you are here for a probation violation hearing, call the next case". I knew how her case was going to end up and I was right...she went to prison. 2. A loudmouth was before a judge for a misdemeanor sentencing, judge sentenced him to 30 days because it was his second time in court for not following the courts orders. The guy was pissed and yelled at the judge "that's great, so I'll loose my job, loose my apartment, way to go judge", The judge responded, "I'm changing the order to 60 days". The loudmouth then yelled at the judge "you can't do that, asshole", Judge responded with "90 days, do you have any more comments or do you want to keep going?" Loudmouth quietly said "I'll be quiet". I damned near started laughing out loud but I didn't want any trouble from the judge...I could tell he wasn't in a good mood. Yes, funny stuff does happen in court. |

I saw some half-head shaved lesbian gal freak in traffic court, cussing up the county, crying and screaming, etc. Judge had her arrested for contempt. But when I went out to pay my court costs the crazy chick was there, judge had let her go. I hope they allow this crazy trans to keep practicing, I love wild court vids! |

| Surprisingly, never had a colleague go off. There were a few that you'd think would be the type and were close judging by things they'd say or do on social media, but our bar association stays pretty on top of it. We have a pretty small bar and everyone knows everyone else to some extent, so the SDSC won't put up with a lot crap. I've seen a number of defendants go ballistic. I had a pedo dad come after me and get dragged from the court shouting death threats. I've had a lifer in court one time that kept belching and farting very loudly whenever the judge was talking. I terminated an habitual offender's parental rights so mom's new husband could adopt the kids and he had some pretty choice words for me as he was walking out of court. |

I've tried cases in that courtroom, the one with the scene from And Justice for All. Having the movie come to town was the best thing that even happened to that building. Decades of cigarette smoke had changed the color of the marble to a filthy brown. For the movie, they cleaned the marble right up. That movie was 1979, and I remember it before it was cleaned up. I'm getting old... |

Judge doesn't seem to be being unreasonable to me... |

I figured that talking was not in my best interest. I did however put my fist through the wall in the hallway on the way out of the courthouse. I was paranoid for months after that but nothing came of it. |

The very first thing the judge did was instruct everyone to address him as "your honor" and give everyone a quick rundown of etiquette, including the fact that we'd all already pled guilty. We could offer an explanation, but that was it. First case comes up, pretty straightforward. Person addressed the judge as "sir", which he wasn't real happy about but let it pass. At the end he assessed the fine, court costs, but only not one point off. As the afternoon wore on that became the pattern - he would knock off a point. One guy, a lawyer with a clean driving record, asked for a probation before judgement very nicely, and the judge granted it. Other than that excuses weren't working. Another guy insisted on arguing and the judge said he was going to change the plea to not guilty and told the bailiff to escort him out to the scheduling office to put up a bond and get another court date. All this time the woman sitting behind me is talking to her friend about healthy judge is supposed to be knocking all of the points off and that she drives for Uber and Uber will drop her if she has any points on her license. When it's her turn that's the first thing she tells the judge - "You have to knock all the points off, not just one." You can guess how well that was received. "I came in person, you are supposed to knock all the points off!" Didn't happen - fine, court costs, no points dropped at all. She was pissed! In the end the lawyer with the PBJ and me were the only ones to actually say "your honor" - he seemed visibly pleased when I did so. It didn't get all my points dropped, just some, but he was already pretty pissed. So yeah, that's my watching someone talk themselves into something worse in a courtroom story. |

I've seen clients act far worse than that and not get held in contempt. I was cross examining the other party (non jury trial) once and he said something about Obama. Obama wasn't even president, the guy was just ranting. I had a suspicion what was coming and quickly asked a follow up question asking what he said about Obama. The judge actually said my name and "No, stop!" Lol. She knew I was trying to provoke him. He started calling Obama an n word. Then he leapt up. I thought "here we go!" But he ran out the door. His lawyer glared at me and I almost started laughing. I forgot what happened in the end, I think the judge dismissed his case and told everyone to leave for lunch. He ran to the far end of the parking lot and was yelling. I walked out into a common area and a deputy said to me "you did this!" The other lawyer started to leave but I asked the deputy to come with us. He was yelling about his own lawyer (you could hear him yelling her name.) I turned to her. "Goes to show you. He's mad at you instead of me." She shrugged and walked to her car and drove off. |
