You can't go wrong with either of them.

I need to start buying for my next batch though.

Excellent choices!  The MACALLAN is my favorite, especially the 12.

12 is good.
18 is very good. <--I would say this is in the realm of Lagavulin 16
25 is Epic.
30 is un-fucking-believable.

It should be noted that price increases with taste when it comes to Scotch.

ETA: Look, after the first or second... you can drink f'ing Johnny Walker or Famous Grouse. Start good, then ease down. It'll save the pocketbook.

Interesting you left the 15 out (I'm not a big fan), as with the rest - macallan rocks.

The 12 is my go-to as well.

I'll have to revisit the 15. When it comes to the mcallan it's always a pleasure!

I didn't say it was cheap. But I can get better prices than that (25 is ~$700, local). I've only had the 30 at a work outing, on a customers tab. His Idea; they had it, but wasn't going to drink it alone. He owned the company, so if that's how he wanted to spend the corporate dollar, who was I to complain? (But yeah, we were paying ~$100/oz for the stuff)

My go-to's in good Scotches are the Mac 18 and the Lagav 16. And then on to Johnny Red.

ETA: Forgot about the Glenlivet 18. Good stuff.

Straight, first drink... Yeah. Though my Dad, with the burned-out-taste-buds, would disagree. But I'm only talking about the 3rd or 4th. When you're home, watching the game, or a movie, etc. I don't really drink when I'm 'out', and when I do, it's not good stuff - it's usually low-test beer.

Just tried that Lagavulin Distiller's Edition...

Oh my.

It's a little fruity but not sweet. Maybe a hint of raisins or something, dark and pleasant. Highly recommended for Islay fans.

Equivalent.

As I understand it, this is 16 yr old, just casked again in sherry casks before bottling.
