I’m AHT’s media director and the one who filmed this. It was an X5 FCU and gray guns trigger and slide. I also exclusively shoot P320’s and have for 5+ years. I am now switching after seeing this first hand and realizing it was NOT user error and the gun wasn’t touched at all.

That's what I think of the Sig P320 test budget and Army test program around it.

Some hand Dremeling required.

The original 320 design could apparently swap into a 250 slide.  That isn't the case today, so SIG would be on the hook for a 250 slide, likely a 250 chassis, and the 250 FCU - hammer, trigger, assorted parts.

The 250 isn't a bad DAO trigger - it's just a DAO trigger.  SIG 320 owners would be very unhappy w/ that solution - as Remington 597 owners were when their new .17 HMR guns were recalled  & replaced w/ .22 WMR guns.

Right now, barrels, mags, & grip frames interchange between your 250 & 320.  It's a pretty big expense for SIG to replace all the 320 slides out there - oh, you had your slide Cerakoted?  Custom optic cut?  Too bad.  You loved your 320 trigger?  Here, have this safe 7 lb DAO trigger that is 1.6 kilometers long.

Without a complete redesign of their pre-cocked striker system?

Cant do a glock style striker. Turning it into a DAO p250 would require a new FCU and slide I think. I thought the p320 FCU could be converted to the DAO but someone here said it couldnt.

They'll need to seriously examine whether quality assurance is slipping and if tollerances are sensitive to whether machinging or casting is off a few .01s of an inch.

Hell, a mechanical system thats mass produced and suppose to be safe, thats overly sensitve to any thing thats out a hundredth or few hundredth if an inch (tollerance stacking) is just poor engineering.

Many mass produced parts that are critical can and are held to 0.00x's or smaller. Sub thousandth tolerances are used only when required, but thousandths are common. You are off by a factor of 10.

Well, this being 2025, and with the spirit of DOGE in mind, the military should round up all of the M17's / M18's, load them aboard the B-2's, with chambers loaded and full magazines inserted, and then proceed to drop them on the undeground nuke production facilities in Iran. You've got some misconceptions about what the RFP asked for.

M.3.1.3 Upon receipt of hardware submission, inspections will be conducted to ensure that the Modular Handgun System candidate has an integrated rail, an external safety mechanism, adjustability for ergonomics (by means of grip inserts, grip panels, front or back straps, different triggers, or other means) and be other than single action only. Submissions without these features will not be considered for evaluation.

They did not exclude slide mounted safeties; that's the only place in the RFP that mentions the external safety. Modularity, in the context of the RFP, meant 'has an integrated rail' and 'adjustability for ergonomics'. Sig used different size grip frames to meet this requirement, Glock (and probably most of the other competitors) used removable backstraps; both met the requirements of modularity. Glock lost on price, not on features.

RFP if you're interested.

Thanks; it seems that I’ve misremembered some stuff, or maybe just been outright wrong/misinformed.

I’d swear I previously saw a blurb about that slide mounted safety when I read this back while it was a thing.

Interestingly, I saw an excerpt in another thread that said it could not be single-action only.

Thanks; I see that now. Makes it even more interesting that the Army spent millions of dollars to choose an unfamiliar and immature gun over one that was already well vetted by SOF for two decades of largely wartime use, and continues to be issued to this day.

It might be argued that the Glock backstrap system would be more useful than changing grips to DoD employees. Glocks come with them, whereas Sigs don’t. I suspect that SMs requesting a larger or smaller grip module are going to get told to pound sand, and just get issued a box-stock M18 or M17 with no consideration for “modularity”.

If anything, the incredibly low rate of this actually happening (relative to number in circulation) may be a bigger problem than if they were popping off left and right when originally fielded. Whatever the remediation would have been it'd also be well in SIGs rearview by now.

The trigger sucks, the gun sits higher so it has more recoil than a Glock or M&P, the frame sucks.

Mine has never malfunctioned in any form or manner. I shoot similar scores as I do with the Glock. Both high 90's to a 100.

I'm old school and prefer not to shoot a 100. If I don't have any natural misses from the course of fire by the time I get to the 5 yard line I will pull one or two out on purpose.

I did shoot a buddies that had a + trigger and grip frame changed out and I liked it 100% better than the stock version.

KelTec was using them at least as early as 1995.  Swapping out grip frames for different colors on the P11 was a thing back in the day.

Technically you could say that the Grendel P10 was modular.  The entire FCU is held into the frame by screws and comes out as a unit.

OK.  It took me a while but i am convinced that it just isnt worth it to carry either of my 320's.  Sucks, because i liked my M17 so much that i bought a 320C for just that purpose.  Of course, i bought them years ago when the issue was still somewhat defensible.

Now i have two 320's that I'm not sure what to do with

I have a close friend who has several P320s. He's heavily invested in the platform and is obviously very disappointed in Sig. He's facing the
same dilemma. Me? I'd clean them up, case them, and put them in the back of the safe. Walk away from them- for now. I believe Sig will
have to deal with this eventually. Maybe a recall, or send out a replacement FCU to owners, something like that. Meanwhile, shoot something
else you already own. Or, use it as an excuse to but a new pistol! Either way, it sucks, but better safe than sorry. Explore alternatives and options.
