Sucks for sig though

I just see posts on Reddit with ranges banning the 320 now explicitly citing the usaf incident post-charges. Seems silly when it's looking less likely that it was "magic sig go boom".

The way things went down with the entire incident I'm inclined to believe that it was both horseplay and an uncommanded discharge.  I don't see a general suspending the use of a firearm across his entire command without a hole in the bottom of the holster.  We had a lot of negligent discharges with the M9 while I was in.  Many were initially blamed on the gun.  Some even ended in deaths.  Not once was the M9 suspended.

Because the USAF incident isn't the only questionable discharge the P320 design has had. Numerous ranges were banning it before June.

I have zero sympathy for SIG.

I'd expect more residue than normal, but there's not going to be the sort of smoking hole that provides incontrovertible evidence that a pistol fired in it.

If I had to guess, I'd say someone involved with the investigation is probably familiar with the buzz surrounding the P320, believed the initial statement because of that buzz (or at least didn't immediately dismiss it as impossible), and recommended the pause in use as a result.

Inspection completion: On August 25, 2025, AFGSC released a statement confirming that its inspection of 7,970 M18 handguns was complete.

Issues identified: Inspections found discrepancies in 191 weapons, citing problems with component wear, the safety lever, striker assembly, and sear. These firearms were tagged for repair.
View Quote
Cleared for use: Despite the findings, AFGSC cleared the M18 for use, stating that a review of past weapon discharges in the command had not attributed any incidents to a weapons malfunction.

Criminal investigation: The announcement also referenced a development in the criminal investigation of Airman Lovan's death. Another airman was arrested for involuntary manslaughter, false official statement, and obstruction of justice.

Ongoing procedures: AFGSC has implemented "enhanced inspection procedures" for the M18, including new semi-annual reviews focusing on internal safety mechanisms.

That's taken directly from this TWZ article:

https://www.twz.com/land/sig-m18-pistol-returned-to-service-by-air-force-global-strike-command

191 problems in a sample size of 7,970 pistols would be a failure rate of 2.4%. Of course, we don't know the history of these individual guns or exactly what they're recording as a failure, but it's a data point of sorts.

Just for fun: If Sig has produced 3.5M P320s, and that 2.4% failure rate were to apply to the whole run, we'd be looking at 84,000 units in circulation with problems.

That would suggest a 2.3% failure rate for passing their test. Whatever that is.

If I remember correctly a police department had several hundred and inspected them all and came up with a similar number. But smaller sample and they were around 3 to 4%.

Personally I am not saying all P320s are defective but this and the other tests and even Wyoming Gun Projects "test" seems to show that. Only 1 that he has was so easy to get to go off with his actions.

I have a similar-ish Safariland ALS 7TS Glock holster, and the window in the bottom of the holster doesn't align with the barrel. It partially occludes some of it.

It has the appearance of having been designed to allow brass to fall out.  It's not designed for (say) an extended, threaded barrel.  You'd have to modify it to allow for that.

Given that AFGSC has resumed the use of their M18s, is it maybe time to give up on the idea that there was some sort of concrete proof of a pistol firing in the holster in that case?

Most people, obviously not as smart as you, were not able to clearly see how simply bumping a striker fired pistol in a holster with the trigger pulled far enough back could fire by being bumped.

I guess I missed all those smart folks helping clear that up early on, though, so that mystery could have been cleared up so much earlier, and time and and effort could have been spent enacting safety protocols to follow.

Hopefully those with such wisdom have been tirelessly working to see why and how it may occur more frequently between differing models/manufacturers instead of focusing on just one..

Could have cleared a lot of this up much sooner…

Considering that the trigger/sear mechanism is in the frame and the striker is in the slide, one might logically conclude that, when the sear/striker engagement is just short of “full pull”, that any movement between the slide and frame could easily result in the sear disengaging the striker, result in an unintentional discharge.

The P365 has a striker lock that must be pushed up to disengage it.Thats something I like about it. It wont go off with the slide out of battery. You have to pull the trigger to get it to go off and the slide must be fully forward.
The P365 is a superior to the P320. I'd really like to see a P365 FUSE first hand I bet its even better because of the alloy "frame" grip our whatever its called.

How are companies still finding out about the Streisand Effect, two decades later?

I'm always in a sort of awe when this many dumb people end up in leadership at the same company at the same time.  It must be a nightmare of anxiety to be in middle management at Sig and have an average amount of common sense, just wondering what dumb thing the company leadership will double down on next.

You know what I think is really going on there?

A lot of the folks at "PEO Soldier" (the office responsible for programs like the ACU and MHS) have moved on, but there are a few that have been there for over a decade.

One of them is a certain "Thomas Vass" who as been there in some form since 2007.

He was quoted as being the program manager for the M18 pistol, and I'm not sure if that means he was in the same role for the MHS overall, or only involved post-award.

Regardless, his career and reputation are likely on the line with this MHS fiasco, and he is who Sig quoted to the court in order to justify sealing that FMECA document.

So when you hear that the Army wants to keep these documents sealed and/or classified, read that as Thomas Vass wants to keep these documents sealed and/or classified.

From court filings:

Good Morning Eric,

The Army position would be to oppose the distribution to the public of the
FMECA document as it potentially reveals critical information about the
handgun (design, reliability, performance, etc.).

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks,
Thomas Vass

There is no information about any standard issue pistol that is in any way critical to national security.  No foreign power or terrorist org is going to be emboldened enough to do anything because they learned that the M18 has problems.

That doesn’t seem like a super accurate description. As far as I can tell they never mention national security. Their argument seems to be that they were contractually obliged to provide that document and that the Army promised not to release it.

police 1 is going the gaslighting route.

https://www.police1.com/firearms/sig-sauer-p320-controversy-separating-fact-from-fiction-in-safety-claims
Designed and tested to the highest standards
The P320 was engineered and tested to meet or exceed the most stringent industry safety standards, including NIJ, SAAMI and MIL-STD-810G protocols. It also underwent exhaustive in-house and end-user agency testing by organizations such as the FBI and the U.S. military.

Testing involved trigger performance, accuracy, metallurgical inspections, malfunction assessments and comprehensive drop testing. These protocols require any serious malfunction to trigger re-engineering and resubmission. According to SIG Sauer, no evidence has ever emerged to indicate the P320 can fire without a trigger pull.

Viral videos and clickbait narratives about the Sig Sauer P320
Despite this record, social media platforms and clickbait videos continue to stir skepticism. Some claim to show P320s firing without trigger activation. Videos, however, are not scientific tests. In the era of video editing and out-of-context clips, officers and agencies should view these with a critical eye.

As many officers know, there are always three sides to every story: one version, another and the truth — often somewhere in the middle. Video clips rarely tell the whole story, and claims should always be weighed against empirical data.

Big Rapids police cite safety concerns with SIG Sauer P320
The department proposes switching to Glock 45

“We carry the SIG Sauer P320 and in the last three or four years it has become more of a prevalent issue with what is called ‘uncommanded discharges’ with this firearm,” Torres said. “What I mean by that is there is no touching or manipulation of the firearm in any manner, and the firearm is discharging — in some cases into other officers, into vehicles or into objects — and it is causing serious liability issues.”

He said that across the country there are currently hundreds of litigation issues against the company where people have injured themselves, or that have been injured by someone else, when the weapon discharged into them or near them.

County board to hold public hearing on MI Neighborhood grant
The Osceola County Board of Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m., Sept. 2, in the Osceola County Administration Building at 602 Upton Ave., Reed City.
Torres showed clips of videos of the firearms discharging while the officer’s hands were not on the weapon and it was still in the holster.

In one video, a police officer is seen reaching into a vehicle to conduct a search when his weapon discharges.

“You can see that his (the officer) hands are in the car searching the vehicle and the weapon goes off and shoots his partner behind him,” Torres said. “He is not touching the weapon in any way and there is no manipulation, and it discharges. So, you can imagine that this is kind of an issue for us. That is one of the many (incidences) that are going on around the country and police departments are getting rid of this firearm.”

So, you can imagine that this is kind of an issue for us. That is one of the many (incidences) that are going on around the country and police departments are getting rid of this firearm.”

If you read the whole story it’s obvious the firearms trainer wants to get Glocks and red dots. He is using the bad publicity of the p320 to get money approved to buy what he wants them to have. He never mentions any issues that they personally have seen. So I’m not quite sure what the point of this story is aside from he wants to get them optics equipped Glocks. Probably from the tax payers pockets of course. I’m sure pretty much all of us would love to switch from a p320 to an optic equipped Glock if someone else was footing the bill too.

I think inside a Flux Raider is where all 320s need to end up (I ordered one in Ranger Green myself).

Well if their department gets sued the taxpayers will be footing the bill as well. And maybe a dead taxpayer or officer.

Sometimes you just have to do what is difficult or expensive and wait for the class action suits or refunds to come in.

And there were three options offered, only one of which was switch to glocks.

No, their insurance would foot the bill most likely. How long has that department had their p320s so far and how many incidents have they personally experienced themselves? I don’t really care what they do with their money though. I don’t live there

I am under the impression those examples he was sharing were of other departments, not his. He was using other places incidents to create fear to get new pistols in my opinion. And One of the options was to install manual safeties. But he was worried that the officers would not be able to learn to use them properly without a lot of training and reps lol. As I said, I don’t care what they do. It’s not my money
