I picked up an elite bare blade (shirasaya) with a bo-hi.
Its not quite the blade the Hanwei makes but it's damn nice for $300. The defect is in the shape of the blade near the Yokotoe and Kissaki and the Boshi line. The blade is slightly fat in this area and the top profile is asymmetrical.
Most people would never notice, and it has zero effect on performance, it's just "sloppy" as far as build goes. I saw zero damage on anything, and since they are selling so many of these I think it's a manufacturing problem.
I won't get a chance to cut a mat with it until spring, I like the balance. It's light and I was surprised when I put it through the motions, a shirasaya is not appropriate for cutting practice, so I my end up building a proper sword out of it. Ronin sells the hardware to do it.
