Similar attitude towards communists (and Leftists, generally). Refused to call his country Zimbabwe. He was just a kid when Rhodesia fell, though. Anyways, he relayed a story about when he first came to work at the college, shortly after becoming a citizen (by marrying a U.S. citizen; he gave the impression he hadn't been in the U.S. for very long at that point). He saw a flyer about an African-American faculty group that was being formed and would be meeting at a particular place and time. He thought that, being an African citizen and an American one, that would be just the thing for him. I guess it was quite shocking to the rest of the group for this white guy to come into their meeting, and they protested his insistence on inclusion, saying there was no way he was African-American and therefore didn't belong. Rather upset, he said, before leaving furiously, "I'm from Africa! Have any of you even been to Africa?" Your post just reminded me about that story. |

Declaring it all 'racist' was a good distraction from the failed European imperialism in Africa. It wasn't the Africans' race, it was the fact they weren't [British]. Not like the masters. But that holds true even against whites. The Brits didn't generally see any of their 'commonwealths' as more than 'colonials' rather than those of the master nation. Only treated well when needed purely to defend the British and The Crown. |

That it furthered the goals of the soviet union in the African continent, and that the destruction of such a prosperous nation for the region was detrimental to Africa and anyone living there. I have seen very few things posted about it that were like "yay white supremacy" and had anything to do with Rhodesia directly. Most were just white supremacists who just happened to like Rhodesia. If they are pro Rhodesia and white supremacists, they are retarded IMO (for reasons aside from their identity politics BS). Plenty of blacks served in their counter terrorism forces. And the harm done in that nation by the commies was done to blacks, much more than whites. My feel is that the "Rhodesia is a white supremacist dog-whistle" crap is the same as "the OK hand symbol is a white supremacist dog-whistle" crap. Or that Pepe is a white supremacist dog whistle, or Harambe, or literally any meme for that matter. I found a book that discussed Rhodesia (although it was not the central subject in the book) being given away at the college library when I was 18. I guess I became fascinated with it, and ended up developing a strong interest in it, as well as an admiration for what they tried to do, which was not difficult given my extremely Rightist political beliefs, which were already rather developed at that age. I'm not quite young enough to be a "Zoomer", though (or whatever that generation is called; there are several names I've seen); I'm a Millennial. I'm not a racist, much less a white supremacist, although I do subscribe to the belief that Western civilization at its best was superior to all others to date and have no problem with things like colonial rule or settler rule if it means bringing the light of that civilization in to illuminate the darkness that could be and has returned to many corners of the earth. I'm sure if I post my thoughts in the "jogger" thread once I catch up I'll get called a racist, though. |

Quoted: What percentage of Rhodesia's officer corps was black in, say, 1975? Probably zero, but they were working on it. Are you trying to passive aggressive suggest that they should have had instant parity at UDI? Cause that didn't work well in 1980, it probably wouldn't have worked well in 1965. |

I can see why you think they had to wait though. I mean the RAR had only been around for 50 years at UDI; nowhere near enough time to develop officers. I assumed, rightly or wrongly, that you were suggesting that Rhodesia wasn't a racist nation, or at least that the Rhodesian military wasn't a racist organization, by posting that 80% of the Rhodesian military was African. I was suggesting that wasn't the case. South Africa had blacks in their military too after all. This doesn't mean that people who are interested in Rhodesian history or who admire Rhodesia's military accomplishments are racist of course. |

This doesn't mean that people who are interested in Rhodesian history or who admire Rhodesia's military accomplishments are racist of course. I am stating, that a large number of Rhodesian blacks preferred to fight for the Rhodesian government, rather than against it. Most of the Rhodesian black soldiers were volunteers, especially before 78, where as many (no statistics available) of the terrs were press ganged. Everything is racist, some things (communism) are worse than racism. Clearly a lot of black Rhodesians thought as I do. Rhodesian Brushtroke isn't a racist camouflage pattern (such a statement is absurd on its face.) If anything it's a, "stop communism at all costs" camouflage patern. In modern usage it ranks up there with "start up the rotors" memes. And I'm down with it. |
