So I went to a buffet yesterday for mother's day with my soon-to-be in-laws...
They seated us next to a family of "respectable and definitely legal citizens" and I notice a 3 year old kid in a booster seat. My first thought is - this kid is gonna cry as soon as we sit down. Sure enough - 30 seconds into us sitting down, WAHHHHHHHHHHHH WAHHHHHH SCREAM GAHHHHHH Parents made no attempt to quiet the kid down. No apology. No taking Junior outside for awhile. They let the kid scream out straight for 10 minutes. We picked up our dishes and moved to a different table and complained to the manager, who made no attempt to speak with the family of unruly child. Family gave us nasty looks the rest of the evening. Their child continued to scream for the entire 1.5 hours we were there. Numerous other families proceeded to complain, yet the manager refused to address the situation or even walk in the vicinity of the problem family. Check comes. Paid the bill. Left no tip. Fuck stupid family and stupid restaurant owners. If I was there myself I would have walked out on the tab, but don't want to make a bad impression on soon-to-be in-laws. So what does GD do under these circumstances? |

Restaurant managers don't have a set up balls enough to handle these situations. Other patrons don't want to step out of line or "be that guy". Everyone suffers. For some reason, it seems taboo for folks to complain about other people's children. Almost like a huge no no to imply someone's child is a fucking brat that needs to be shut up.

I would move to another table first. I usually ask to not be seated next to tables with kids in the first place.  I have a low tolerance for idiot parents and their low hanging fruit.
I know, not very maternal of me. I'm mid 50's and never had kids for that reason. I adore my dogs though...

Asking for the specific reason a person has a service dog, or what the dog is specially trained to do, is illegal.  There are places where dog owners congregate. I don't go to them. |

Which cultures are you talking about, specifically, and what is your personal experience to reach such a definite but broad conclusion? |

Their restaurant, their rules.
If the hostess ever tries to seat us by a table of kids, I simply tell her that we will not be sitting near them and to try again. I get weird looks but fuck them, I am not going to ruin my meal by being all sheepish and just accepting their rudeness. |

Why stiff the server for a problem that only managment could solve? If you were going to stiff anyone it should have been the restaurant for the meal, then handed your server a tip. To answer your question, if the restaurant couldn't provide a pleasant dining experience after being asked to correct it, I would have told them I wasn't paying and why. But I wouldn't have stiffed my server.

There's a restaurant near me that doesn't allow children under 12. It's pricy but worth every penny.
I can't stand parents who let their snowflakes go unattended. Just the other day at a different place than mentioned above, two women were yaking and texting while waiting for their food. Ignoring their waling children. I took it as long as I could, then jumped up and asked "Can you not hear them?" I got the stink eye from them and my wife, but I ate my bland overpriced food in peace. |

Sorry about that OP.
My kids are normally good, but sometimes the 2-yr old just doesn't have the patience for a restaurant. We usually do buffets so there's no waiting around and on a few accasions I end up sitting in car with crabby kid while wife and 6-yr old finish eating. |

+1... definitely an asshole move, on your part. Server had to put up with you moving tables, and taking up space for an hour and a half. This, along with also dealing with the screaming kid. If I was you, I would avoid that place at any cost. Were you to go there again, you might have some special ingredients in your food. I'm just saying...
