I tried the Flor de Cana 12yr after suggestions in this thread, and I was quite disappointed. It wasn't as complex (to me) as El Dorado, Kirk and Sweeny, or Ron Zacapa.

I picked up a bottle of Ron Zacapa 23 because of the thread. You are right they have different profiles.
I guess it's a matter of taste, I perfer the older Flor deCana if I'm just having one or two for an aperitif, it's definitely sweeter.
Thats my sipping rum needs.
Both are good, there is no doubt they have different spectrums of flavor.

Im happy to have both in the cabinet. Thanks to those who suggest it.

Ron Cartavio XO, you will thank me later! If you can find the four square Criterion that is also very good. El Dorado 15 is also good, but the Cartavio takes it all!

Bought a bottle of Kirk and Sweeney 18yr and definitely enjoyed it. I finished it off last night and had the urge for another sip of rum and all I had left was some Havana Club anejo 7(the real stuff from Cuba) and the difference was huuuge!! The K&S was so much better, although it is 2x the price.

I picked up a bottle of this last night. Not bad, needs to breath a little before sipping. Will have to test further this coming weekend to make final judgement.

I just grabbed a bottle of Kraken and Pyrat to give them a shot. Never had rum before except the Malibu my mom likes, so I am hoping I am in for a treat. My wife has said she would like to try some, she doesn't like whiskey, and they are in cool bottles!

Coming from whiskey, the alcohol'burn' surprised me. I don't drink enough to be over that, but in whiskey it seems more subdued. With that said, Kracken was delicious (it's Kracken Black, if that makes any difference). The Pyrat was good, I want to give it another go as I wasn't impressed really, but it was right after the Kracken, see if a cleaner taste will make a difference.

Rum doesn't set well with me.  Maybe a high-dollar one would.

Bourbon is my choice.

Pyrat is one of the sweeter rums I've had.
It has a pretty distinctive flavor, so if you don't like it, try another.

It's not bad, but me and the wife enjoy the Kracken better.

Barbancourt Rhum from Haiti. It is as good as a hundred dollar bottle of single malt scotch.  35-45 bucks a bottle.

I'm busy trying Whisk(e)y.

I hope Rum and vodka become super, super popular, and all the hipsters start drinking that instead.  1/3 of the recommended whiskies aren't available due to the popularity explosion of whiskies.

I may be weird, but Flor de cana 7 is better than 12 to me.

On the higher end side of the scale, i like abuelo tawny and  havana club seleccion de maestros

Vizcaya Cristal is worth a try, very nice for sipping. An aged rum but filtered to make a white, still retains a lot of flavor. Goes for about $24/750ml near me, so quite inexpensive. Vizcaya do a dark rum (good but a bit sharp, I still prefer the white) and black too (not tried).
