Wolfpack,

This is a very nice gesture.  I applaud you.

However, I must ask one question:

Have you verified the legality of this raffle?  I'm not trying to be a jerk, but these raffles for friends were tried on other boards, and found to be in violation of some state laws.  Particularly if the prizes involve firearms or if they are valued over certain limits.

[red]Basically, the raffle could fall under the gambling statutes.[/red]  When these other raffles were checked, they were not in compliance.  Most participants chose to just "donate" their raffle money, rather than receive a prize.

If all has been checked, please respond and count me in.

Good thing I live in [b]Las Vegas[/b]. [banana]

I doubt the gubmint really cares about a little raffle, I do know the Cheif of Police and most of the City Council members though...I think I'm o.k. [;)]

Yes, I saw that you were from NV.  However, gambling is regulated there, is it not?

Seriously, I'm not trying to be an ass, but a year or so ago, there was another individual trying to raise funds for another deceased gunsmith's family.  He was offering knives, firearms, and such as prizes.

He had declared a winner, and was then notified by his state's investigators that the raffle was illegal and he was commiting a felony.  Remember, a felony means no more guns.  Had he shipped out the firearms or other prizes he would have lost his business (gunsmith).

I understand and appreciate what you are doing.  However, I'm sure we all would like to make sure that we are not contributing to a possible illegal enterprise.  You may be in good standing with the local cops, but how does that help us?

As I mentioned before, when the other raffle was determined to be illegal, all the participants "donated" their raffle money, and declined to accept any prizes.  I would like to help, but not at the cost of commiting, or participating in a crime.  That is why I requested confirmation that all legalities have been satisfied.

Jesus Christ, Ahab, if you're so goddamn afraid of this raffle why don't you just go away?  What legalities are you so paranoid about?  You ask the kid down the street for his business license when he's out selling lemonade, don't you?  What about church or school raffles?  You give them this diatribe as well?

This is to help the mother of a man that died... nothing more.  No profit is being taken, none of the monies donated is going to anyone other than this woman. There's plenty of shit going on in this world for you to worry about, this is not one of them.
You don't wanna donate, fine.  But stop pissing on others parades. [pissed]

I must say that your comprehension of my post is amazing.  Nowhere did I say I didn't want to contribute.  I simply asked a question that needed to be answered BEFORE I contributed.

Had you any idea of the mess involved in the last raffle, you would understand my hesitation.  No profit was being made on that raffle either.  However, the states tend to look disfavorably on those "raffles" or gambling organizations that have not met local ordinances.

If you have satisfied your own conscience, and feel that the risk of loosing your right to own firearms is nothing to be concerned about, then that is your own affair.  Of course, as public as this board is, I'm sure at least one or two anti's have called the local authorities and notified them of this raffle.

Had Wolfpak, or yourself, simply posted that you had confirmed with the local authorities of the legalities of this raffle, then there would have been no problem.  Unfortunately, you seem to feel that being in compliance with the law is nothing to be concerned about.  If Wolfpak is "in good" with the local COP, then why doesn't he just ask him about any laws that he might be breaking?  It would seem that a 5 minute call would answer a bunch of questions.

Personally if I were running the raffle, I would want to make sure that it was in compliance with all local laws.  In addition, I wouldn't want to be asking my fellow gun enthusiasts to contribute to a possible illegal enterprise.  I would think it prudent, that those who wish to help out a family in need shouldn't have to be punished for their kindness.

Your whole attitiude is, "I don't give a crap".  "If it's illegal, so what!"  That appears to be a very reckless point of view, considering that you have brought outside parties into your endeavor.  Placing yourself at risk is one thing, but putting others in jeapordy is blatant negligence.

I don't know your recently deceased friends situation or what he was up against, but I hope his family and friends can come to peace with the situation eventually.

I'm in for a ticket (Paypal). Us "gun nuts" need to stick together, just look at the good a few of us can do with out any one of us being seriously impacted!  Keep up the good work!  Makes me proud to be a part of this group.  Next we fix up the gun laws!

[b]Judas Priest on a **&&^^&* Pony!!!![/b]  [soapbox]
I can hardly believe the nail-biting, sniveling, anal-retentive nonsense posted above regarding the legality of this simple raffle to help a mother who's lost her son.  That makes about as much sense as not buying a plate of brownies from the church youth group's bake sale until someone can assure you that they were baked in a licensed, gov't. inspected facility.
[nono] (Don't buy those brownies, Daddy, you might lose your guns over them!)  Heaven forbid we help someone else out without consulting a damn lawyer first.  [pissed]
I guess Grandpa was right when he said "Anytime you try to do something positive, someone is going to give you some grief about it."  This legality BS proves that to be true.
Excuse me, I think I'm going to be ill.  [puke]  Can someone tell me if there are legal requirements that must be met before I hurl??  I heard of someone else who got in big trouble over blowing chunks without permits, etc......  something about negligence......
[rolleyes]
