There is no such thing as a "pitbull type" dog. That's another media created moniker like full semi auto or assault weapon. There are bully breeds and many different kinds of dogs fall into that category. The fact you consider an American Bulldog a "pitbull" type dog shows you have no understanding of the breed and like most in this thread, rely on media hysterics (which is ironic) for all your definitions.

To be perfectly blunt, I'd say the chances of using a 5-shot revolver successfully against 5 attacking pit bulls is dicey, at best...but I'd seriously consider something magazine fed with 10-12 rounds at least.

They don't hold still, and there's a good chance that by the time you've deployed that gun, at least ONE of them is on you, biting you or someone you love....meaning it's going to be a melee. Aim, capacity to aim, and clear-headed shots may (or more directly WILL) be a luxury. Any miss still leaves a good possibility you're getting mauled or dead...unless you get lucky and the shots disperse them, but I'd not count on a pit to give up the fight.

Moar ammo.

BTW, dog and I were attacked by a pit on the street, while another one advanced on us, and had to go hot, so I'm not speaking out of internet know-nothing-itis. It's frantic, fast, and scary as fuck. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

That's good information and food for thought. I run with my Bodyguard 38 and your post gives me pause.

Funny story, I was attacked by 4 little yippy dogs from the house with new owners down the street. They came blazing out the front door of the house when I was walking by and in pure pack behavior, three got in front and one bit me on the back of the calf from behind. It was a scratch but it still triggered the fight or flight and pissed me the hell off, I called animal control and they took the animal for observation and then gave it back.

I can't imagine the adrenaline and fear from dogs that could actually harm you. Prayers out for this young woman for a quick and full recovery and I hope that animal control destroys the dogs and charges the owners. I don't give a damn what breed of dogs that they are, when a pack of them attacks they need to be killed quickly and their owners held legally and financially responsible for the damage done.

Well, I looked up the stats.  Here is what a quick Google search turned up.  They were all pretty consistent in their conclusions.  Interestingly, I didn't find any stats that seemed to contradict the general consensus.

Pit bulls responsible for 66% of dog bit fatalities.

Pit bulls cause more serious injuries.

Pit bulls account for highest percentage of reported bites.

Now, I know you don't really want to "have a conversation" based on stats because you've preemptively dismissed any stats contrary to your position as inaccurate or misrepresented.  Maybe you would like to offer up some stats that you would be willing to accept?

ETA To be completely fair, I also think other aggressive breeds like GSDs are overrated as pets as well.  Most GSD owners that I know who got one from a breeder because they are "practically police dogs" have asshole dogs that are ticking time bombs.  Most people have no effing clue how to properly raise a dog, let alone the time and desire to do so.  They should stick to the family friendly breeds or at least buy smaller assholes that couldn't maul their way out of a wet paper bag.

I will have any conversation you would like to have.

I will grudgingly agree with:

Pit bulls responsible for 66% of dog bit fatalities.

Pit bulls cause more serious injuries.

With the caveat that many dogs are misidentified as Pit Bulls. It's just a fact. Not long ago an attack was attributed to a Pit Bull but the dead dog pictured was obviously a GSD. There was a thread here about it.
With where we are at today, with so many mutts and crosses identified as Pit Bulls .... it is what it is.

This?:

Pit bulls account for highest percentage of reported bites.

NO fucking way. Been dealing with Breed Specific Legislation a long time, been at countless meetings, on several boards, etc,

Have studied dog bite lists for decades from various sources, hospital emergency room data, etc.

From what I have learned over the decades from my experience, the above statement is FALSE.

If the above said...... Pit Bulls account for highest percentage of bites needing emergency room treatment ........ I would perhaps agree.

Highest percentage of reported bites ,  no fucking way. I have NEVER in decades of study seen Pit Bulls at the top of any Bite List....... ever.

No no, maybe he's right.  Maybe whatever he is referring to is actually a "pit bull" and the rest are just "pit bull lookalikes".  That doesn't help his case as much as he thinks it does.

Fine.  Dogs that "look like" pit bulls, whether or not they are actually pit bulls, are responsible for more deaths & maulings than dogs that "look like" any other breed.  So from now on when I say "pit bulls" I mean dogs that look like pit bulls which, to Dipper's dismay, includes actual 100% pure bred pit bulls.  So, AFAIC, dogs that "look like" pit bulls get lumped into the DO NOT WANT category regardless of DNA profile.

I'm not going to go so far as to say that pit bulls (again, I mean dogs that get counted as pit bulls when they kill a kid) should be banned because I'm not about that life.  But I don't want one in my house, I don't want one around my kids, I don't want them running loose in my neighborhood, and my spidey sense will always tingle when I see one walking his/her #PibbleLife rescue momma that is glued to her phone because her rescue baby of unknown origin will never do nuffin.

ETA And again, to be completely fair, people are terrible at identifying dog breeds.  We have a dog that is occasionally confused for a pit bull despite being a chow/retriever mix with a very chow face and a very retriever body.  I was a little surprised the first time someone cautiously asked us if he was a pit bull as if it were going to lunge at any moment.

I have never owned a Pit Bull. I have for well over 40 years owned high drive, dominant, hard, sharp, what you would no doubt call " aggressive " Rottweilers.  They were/are well breed from German and Austrian stock. Their Sires and Dams and 8 generations back all titled in Shutzhund, French Ring, Protection etc.
I titled 4 of my dogs.
They are/were no nonsense don't fuck around dogs. Not outwardly aggressive but the type of dog you control and not fuck around with. They are in every way comparable to a Pit Bull in their inherent traits.

In all my years of ownership, they were all GREAT dogs. I NEVER had a problem, they never bit anyone that didn't need biting, they never attacked or even growled at my kids who grew up with several of them. Never chased or attacked a jogger, a kid, the mailman, etc.

WHY? How could this even be possible? Over 40 years and multiple dogs? Are you superman?

NO! I am a responsible dog owner....... PERIOD. They never run wild and always under our control.

What would my dogs do left to run wild?  I don't really know. Could they act out if they perceived a threat or got into the pack mentality? Maybe.

Again, they were all great dogs . Never had one problem. Never was visited by dog control or had a complaint.

Pit bulls were bred to fight & kill..  The breed should be eliminated, or a law written that all pit bulls need to  be registered as lethal, and if the dog seriously injuries or kils another person the owner will be HUNG in the public square

Pit Bulls ARE a type of dog.

No  shit !

Formal breeds often considered to be of the pit bull-type include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Considered by who? The news media? People in general? Those that know nothing about dogs and dogs breeding?

Yeah. Here is the thing that you are missing. Let's start with a few FACTS  OK?  If the dog in front of you weighs over 50 pounds, you DON"T have a Pit Bull OK?

I don't give a fuck what the news media or the uninformed call them OK? IF the news media and uninformed/ignorant want to call a cross or mutt a Pit Bull they are free to do so but that doesn't mean some don't know better .  " Pit Bull Type " was just a little concession given to those that know what's up ......... instead of calling EVERY cross and mutt a " Pit Bull " , Pit Bull Type came about.

BUT, here is the thing. NONE of the dogs you mentioned actually look like a real Pit Bull..... because they are not.

If you take the real Pitt Bull and put it beside those breeds you have mentioned, the differences would be striking. Just because the real Pit Bull was used somewhere in the breeding of these canines, and some idiots don't know what a Pit Bull is, doesn't mean some of us adopt their erroneous titles.

Since the Rottweiler was extensively  used in the creation of the Doberman, I guess the Doberman is a Rottweiler type dog.... or perhaps since the Greyhound was used in the development of the Doberman , I guess the Dobe could be called a Greyhound type dog.
Many more examples I could give. Most people that know anything about dogs would readily agree that the Rottie and Greyhound are separate breeds from the Doberman and would not call a Doberman a Rottie or Greyhound type dog.

Not the same for a Pitt. A real Pit is a medium sized dog not weighing over 50 pounds. They have a longer muzzle than the breeds you mentioned...... so they can breath well.... they were bred for that. They have a MUCH lighter  build and are MUCH more athletic and athletic looking that the breeds you have mentioned.

What are often called "Pit Bulls" are mongrels and crosses created by ignorant people. The ONLY thing these type people wanted out of the real Pit Bull was their drive, courage, tenacity, hardness, etc. all good traits.
They crossed them with much larger dogs to gain size, some crossed them with known aggressive dogs of larger breeds to fit their warped ideas, I would bet that genetically if some of these dogs were tested they would actually test low on REAL PIT BULL genetics.

These are facts. You can argue them all day long but it doesn't change the facts.
The dogs causing all the trouble are mutts and crosses...... not the "Pit Bull".

Why does that matter?

You do realize that traits can be bred out, right?  The AKC has managed to do just that to setters, spaniels, etc.  Not all bully lines have game.  And not all people who are trash own the bully breeds, and all do not deserve to be hung.

As a member of the GSD master race, all I can say is that most pibbles I've met in real life are just fine, and almost every mauling story I've ever seen has been pitbulls.

Maybe owners of violent dogs should be charged as though they themselves committed whatever act their dog did?

Owners of any animal should be liable for any damage, injury or death caused by said animals.

You want to own a Chihuahua? Well, if your Chihuahua is an asshole and nips someone on the ankle because it wasn't leashed and you think, "Oh, he's just a little cutie and would never hurt anyone".  You're liable.

Own a pitbull, pet bear or tiger which gets loose and kills/mauls someone; you get charged commensurately. Not just on the hook for medical bills etc. but criminal charges just as if the owner caused the injuries/death. Freedom of choice. You can own them, but you face the consequences as a result of owning them. Be responsible/smart, or get f####d.

There are multiple objective data points I did a bullet points of In a recent thread where the OP put up a terrible case, identified the dogs, identified the owners,
And then people were mad it was about Pitts and shitty owners.

Regardless,
Classic behavioral patterns of owners are to deny the data, bring up the many breed concept, followed by the misidentification concept, that the dog was provoked, the baby was crying, etc.

And will state it’s all about the environment, owners, etc.  and not the dogs.

When you bring up statistics about pit owners, people will get butthurt.  Some will just deny and be mad.
Others will go full circle 180 and claim all pit owners they know are only highly successful geniuses, the breed is special, and needs the loving, magical, special upbringing only they can provide.

They’ll up put up pictures of themselves cuddling the dogs in a lame ass unit patch with no tabs or combat patches on their uniform is some kind of pit fetish porn.

View Quote

What I find interesting is that Dipper acknowledges that pit bulls don't really bite "more" than other breeds, and that they're just more powerful.

Well, yeah.  With great power comes great responsibility.  There's a reason Captain America can't recklessly fist-fight everyone like Skinny Steve Rogers did.  Powerful dogs need proportionately more restraint than ankle biters, and pit bulls just don't have it.  Not only do they lack proportional restraint in how often they bite, and not only do they not restrict bites to actual provocation by someone who is an actual threat to them, but they eagerly escalate many/most bites into deadly force maulings for absolutely no good reason.

That's an appalling combination.  Yes, it occasionally happens with any powerful breed, but the statistics don't lie in this case.  Yes, some mutts that include pit bull and look like pit bulls may get counted as pit bulls, but they should.  However, I see zero statistically significant evidence that the statistics are not representative.  If similar-looking breeds also get counted, maybe that's a hint to stay away from any breed that even looks similar.

I'm not saying "ban them," but owners should bear far more responsibility for them: If anyone has ever reported a dog, and it later hurts someone, that's criminal negligence on the owner's part at the very least.  You'd be an idiot to bring a pit bull around your children, thanks to their predilection for randomly deciding to kill a small child or even an infant for no reason, after years of good behavior.  It's a nanny dog, until it's not.

Based on posts in this thread, maybe the burden of proof for dealing with a misbehaving pit bull must be lower as well: Animal control requires you to tie it up on your property to prove it got loose?  They might as well ask you to tie up a damn tiger.  Surely they'd accept video evidence...?

I like how you think that you know what I think a pit bull looks like.  I would have described every one of those as a pit bull.  Personally, I assume that most dogs are a mixed breed of some sort.  Most people in rural suburbia don't go to a breeder to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars for a pure bred, let alone a pure bred APBT.  When they do, it's usually for a GSD or a working dog of some sort.  The bleeding hearts that actually want a pit bull tend to stick to the rescue dogs of unknown origin.

Now let me help you out because you seem to be missing my point entirely.  Nobody cares if it is a 100% American Pit Bull Terrier or an American Staffordshire Terrier or some "ill bred mongrel" that nom nommed their baby sister.  You know exactly what people mean when they refer to a "pit bull".  A rose by any other name...

The characteristics of those breed and references to them were much different 100-120 years ago.

The patterns and morphologically most often considered pits now had become a recognized issue by the 1960s, and more over the next forty years, and more so in the next twenty.

The modern GSD is bigger, heavier, widened chest, more pet and show Line influence, and a lower curved croup compared to the same time frame.  Everyone thinks of them as a GSD.  But the true form, and there are still some true form working line GSDs out there, are a sleeker, more athletic, exertion and heat resistant performance and look, much like a Malinois / Dutch.

In the same way we what we refer to as pits is not what was a perfect pit 100 years ago,

LOL! You don't get it and aren't half as cute as you think you are.

You missed the point entirely. Dogs that are often called and commonly called a Pit Bull DO NOT even look like a Pit Bull.

Here let me help you out. THESE are real Pit Bulls and I know they aren't what YOU think a Pit Bull is. What YOU envision as a Pit Bull are those big fat heavy dogs with short muzzles that sound like pigs rooting for food. YOU don't know what a Pit is...... you think those ugly fucking aggressive mutts and cross bred abortions are Pits.
You all need to stop being ignorant and contribute the problem we have to the right animals and stop believing the hype and titles the news media puts out.

I know we have a problem but it isn't with "PITS". It's with the ill bred mongrels out there.

I’ve been attacked in my front yard just watering my grass and 2 pits from down the street saw me as a tasty snack. Killed them both. Now days I don’t even chance it, if a pit steps foot on my property I just shoot them immediately.
Shit dogs.

You know very little about canines. You just regurgitate  the shit headlines you read.

I would love to have a trio.

Working line GSD, BM, and DS at the same time.

I have had GSD and Collie,
BM and husky/Aussie mutt rescue
BM and GSD/coonhound mutt rescue

At the same times,
But never quite the combo I meant

Thank you.  Most people wouldn’t know an American Pit Bull Terrier (the only true “pit bull”) if they saw one up close.  And they are not bred to attack humans.  Human aggression was culled back in the day.  These “pits” attacking are likely mostly mixes of other bully breeds or molasser type breed or zero bull dog at all.

EXACTLY!!! Introduce aggressive large breed dogs into the Pit Bull and you get monsters bred by people who are clueless and only breed for size and aggression....... but some of the experts here don't realize that fact.

AND that's the fucking problem isn't it? I know and so do others. We know that what YOU and others call a Pit Bull isn't in fact a Pit Bull..... one more time..... they are crossbred, inbred canines that were bred by people who have about as much knowledge as you do. They were most often bred to large aggressive canines.

I am sure you walk around calling obvious mutts a purebred name. See an obvious mutt that resembles a boxer and it bites someone?  Boxer bites again.

It gets old.

It would appear from the other posters here that YOU have no idea what are speaking about.

At first I thought you were just trolling, but now I realize that you are probably just too emotional and a bit "slow" as well.

You seem to evade all factual points. You are clinging to "They aren't pure pit bulls but probably only have SOME in them" line.

It's delusional.

In the same way we what we refer to as pits is not what was a perfect pit 100 years ago,
What we call a GSD is very different than they were 100 years ago.

It's called breeding. People breed for the characteristics they want to see in the dog.
The Pit Bull or any other bred for that matter didn't "morph" into anything. There are still real Pit Bulls being bred and are available today.

Your example with the GSD and how it has been ruined?????? Is a DIRECT result of what was winning in the show ring. The GSD DID NOT MORPH into that you see today. The traits you see in the Modern GSD were BRED for by idiots....... on purpose.

Just like other assholes took the Pit Bull and breed it for their wayward wants.

You can still get the real Pit Bull and would be AMAZED at the temperament and social ability of the dog.
