If you don't mind me asking - what good is a .357?

For bummin' around the woods or hunting a .44 or .454 is better.

For self/home defense a 1911 is better.

I've been wondering about the usefulness of a .357 revolver, someone please enlighten me!

It's just cool.

I already have a Taurus aluminum model 85 snubby that I have carried for 10 years, this will be something bigger, in stainless, and something that maybe has some history.  Like a S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece that cops carried for years.  Except I want a .357.

If you go S&W get an older "pre lawyer lock" one.  I wouldn't buy a newer one.  I have a 65-3LS, a 4" 625-3, and a 3" 66-5 with Hi Viz sights.  The 66-5 has MIM guts and the difference in smoothness is HUGE.  If you're dead set on a NIB revolver I'd go for the Ruger.  Maybe not as smooth out of the box, but they do smooth up with use, and are nearly indestructable.  I love mine.  If you can find an older 19, 686, 66, or even better yet a 27 or 28 get it.  Otherwise, Ruger.

It is hard to go wrong with any of hte S&Ws.  They are are about perfect.  I have an older 686 that has a dream of a trigger that can put shot after shot into the same hole at 25 yards (when I'm having a good day).

The Ruger and Taurus guns are well built, but don't shoot as well as the S&W -- mainly because their triggers are not as smooth.

My .02.

That what I found also when I was trying to evaluate which revolver to buy circa 1985.  I found that the Colt Python and S&W 686/586,66/19 were the most accurate because of their triggers with 1" 5 shot groups at 75'.  Followed by the Taraus M66(S&W M19/66/65 clone), Ruger Security 6(discontinued) and GP100(new at the time), at 1.5-2" groups.  Don't know about the other revolvers in the Colt line such as the King Cobra.  I bought a 6" brushed ss Colt Python for ~$650, my friends bought the S&W SS 6" 686 for ~$325 out-the-door.

If it's more for carry this is a pretty good choice.  Model 60, this is actually a Ladysmith but essentially the same as a Chiefs model.  Paid around $300 for it used here in CA.

Alright, gonna go hit the bank then go down to Jensen Arms in Loveland.  I'll post when I get back with what I bought.

The 357 is a hell of a round! I just can not believe that it is inferior to the 45 acp. Its stopping power is well documented.

BTW - 357 ammo is a tad cheaper than .44 or .454 ammo.

A good revolver is a ROCK solid firearm - fairly simple operation, reliable, accurate,...
If you've never used one, you should.  You will learn why it took so long for semiautos to push them out of the military and police market place.

Semiautos are relatively complicated to operate.  They never "feel" as "solid" as a good revolver.

The 357 round is as good as a 45ACP for putting bad guys down, not better but just as good.  It can be loaded down for targeet and practice use (but use full sized 357 brass for this not 38 brass).

I've heard recent stories of used, blued Pythons going for as little as $400.  Look around, they are the finest 357 available.  I will grant you the S&W 686 is a close second.

S&W 686
Have a 686 with a 4", love it.
GP100 is a good gun also, but I prefer an S&W, smoother trigger IMO.

The exotic metal guns carry nice (light weight) but they don't shoot worth a dam (light weight =wicked recoil and not very steady) and they cost an arm and a leg .
The rugers are built like bank vaults and are great values but I always seem to be held back by the so so triggers.
The S&W 686 (or blued 586 if you can find one) come with really nice triggers and you can swap out a $15 aftermarket spring set for a unbelievable trigger. They cost more than the taurus or rugers but I think the better triggers make them worth it and they have a higher resale value. Aftermarket  wood or rubber grips and holsters are easy to find for the S&W but they can be hard to locate for the taurus/rossi/ruger guns.
Colt pythons are cool guns and the colt guys swear by them but the are pretty expensive.

My advise is to go for the exotic metal gun for your 4th or 5th revolver (unless you really need a carry only gun) when you just want something different to play with.
For your first revolver you can't go wrong with a 686/586 S&W. Rock solid, great trigger, cheep 38's or blow the walls down full house .357's. They are just one of the most shootable guns out there.

Gonna get up early tomorrow and grab a sixgun.  What should I get?

I like the stainless Ruger GP100 with the 3" barrel.  Nothing longer than 4 inches though, since I will occasionally carry this gun.

Smith & Wesson 686 or 66

There is no better .357 than the 686.

I'm not saying the .45 has more "stopping power". It DOES have significantly less muzzle flash & blast than the .357. The .45's also more controllable - meaning more rounds on target - try the "Bill Drill" side-by-side - you'll see the 1911's advantage.

Revolvers aren't MORE reliable than auto's they're DIFFERENTLY reliable. And a double action revolver is much harder to hit anything with than an auto (at least in defensive-type scenarios). And don't even get me started about speed of reloads, concealability, etc...

I'm still a skeptic...convince me!

I've decided to..........."get both".

I am going to get a Colt, but since I was in Jensen's anyway, I HAD to buy something.

Picked up a Sig P229 in .40S&W.

I had a Ruger GP100 once upon a time, but like a moron I sold it.  I had put the Wolff mainspring in it and shot it about 2,000 times so the trigger was pretty smooth.  It was stainless and a beautiful gun.  The Colts are fucking works of art though.

Mine is a 4" barreled stainless model.  It's very nice.  You will NOT regret it.  Honestly, it is my favorite handgun.
