Any surf fishing techniques...i was thinking of just throwing bucktails for some fluke..or whatever else bites. Im an avid fisherman just not from the surf. Should i chunk with something else? View Quote Johns (on the beach road)...hole in the wall fry shack, great milkshakes. I use Fishbites bloodworm flavor. Just cast out on a rig and catch stuff. Never much used artificials in salt water. The small stuff you catch (sometimes bigger stuff) you can chunk up and put out on a bigger surf rod... |

I like Mako Mike's in KDH. Great place to take kids, sharks hanging from the ceiling and stuff.

Is surf fishing not worth the hassle there? It can be frustrating, but I certainly think it is worth it. Some years I get skunked, other years are glorious. Any tips? Tactics? Listen to the guys at the bait shop. Cast your line as far out as you can, preferably past the wave break. Keep at it, don't get discouraged. Go out early in the morning after low tide is at it's lowest, for your best chances. Ok will do...to the other guys..I do have gear.. rugs and bait I'll have to buy accordingly Do not cast as far as you can. Worst advice ever unless you want to reel in skates and rays all day. 99% of the fish you are going to catch in the surf will be in the front trough. Literally 50 feet from the shore. If you want spanish mackerel or blues, on light tackle with a Gotcha plug, hit one of the piers and fish the south side toward the end. Jennettes pier is a good family pier and one of the longest on the east coast. I fish it for Cobia and King Mackerel every weekend from Memorial Day to late September. We had an epic spanish bite last friday and saturday. Pay attention to the water and wind. NE, E, SE winds will provide clearer warmer water. Any wind SW, W, NW will cause upwelling. This is when the warm top layer of water is blown offshore and the cold water ruses up at the shore. It will also muddy up the water pretty good. So from surf i would fish in close with a two hook bottom rig or fish finder rig with shrimp. Good chance you will pick up a puppy drum. Try a Sabiki rig with blood worm or fishbites bloodworm alternative. The kids will love reeling in spot and sea mullet 3-4-5 at a time LOL. No license needed for the piers. $12 license required for the surf. Make sure you observe size and possession limits. |

Ok so I am going to Kill Devil Hills 6/20-6/24. I will have my 2 yr old daughter and female companion with me...I'll be beating the beach up. What else to do? Where to eat? Beer to drink. Rather take advice from you guys then travel advisor. View Quote My parents live in the OBX, I know it well. Cocina beach is pretty nice for the ocean side. For a calmer water experience check out a beach on the sound side somewhere, further south is sandier and nicer. Best lunch spot in the OBX - doesn't look like much but the food is incredible Cafe Lachine There is a really cool farm in Manteo that kids love. Island Farm OBX Brewing has some good beers and decent pub food Anything just shoot me a PM! If you have a 4wd vehicle a trip up to Carova one day is well worth the drive. |

Is surf fishing not worth the hassle there? View Quote OBX has world class surf fishing. I would venture farther south for that though. If you know how to read the water it's easy to find a decent spot. I've do e a fair amount of surf fishing around Oregon inlet and the Hatteras light house. ETA: forgot to mention, cut bait, live shrimp, squid, etc on a fish finder rig or flounder rig would be a good approach. Pyramid sinkers in the 4-8oz range will be required to keep your bait down in the surf there. Also want to echo what a previous poster said about the surf being rough and dangerous the further down you go. I'd be very cautious with the little one even with water wings. Not saying you can't find a safe place totake a dip just be careful. Understand that the good fishing spots are usually not good swimming spots and vice versa. |

View Quote Along with surf, don't overlook pier fishing. Plus, if you like sheephead, head down to the Oregon inlet bridge. Go over to the south side, and there is a walkway you can fish from. Squeeze under the bridge from under the roadway, and you can climb right down to the pilings. Bucktails might get you a cobia, but they will most likely be a rarity by the time you get there. If you're thinking surf, hope for clear water and target pompano. I like to call them "Bluegill of the ocean." DO NOT buy bait for them. Are you familiar with sand fleas? That's what they eat, and are pretty easy to find along the waterline at the surf. Dig up big handfulls of sand, and you'll find them. The big ones are up to around 2". Use a small hook, around 4 to 8, and tie everything! No jewelry, just line (light line,) tied to a mono leader, tied to the hook. Crimp weights up high, pompano have EXCELLENT eyesight. You can also find flounder in the surf, pick up a rig at the tackle store. Mind you, you can pull anything from the surf, as stated before, send the line out to just past the breakers. Watch out for turtles. Mullet and Bluefish are going to be most common though. That, and all the fucking pinfish stripping your hook bare! I quit going to KDH/NH/KH many years ago, and now keep driving south to Hatteras. It's quieter, and the fishing is better. I was just there a couple weeks ago, and they were pulling slot drum and cobia from the surf. Not commonly, but they were there. |

Do they still rent hang gliders?
About thirty five years ago I sat with a six pack and had an entertaining afternoon watching tourists trying to fly off the dunes. Lots of laughs. |

If you can get a live eel out past the far sandbar on a bottom rig you may have a shot at a cobia. BUT the wind needs to be off the ocean, warm (65+) and clear. Plenty of fish to be caught in KDH Nags Head area. No need to drive clear down to Hatteras unless you want to. |

Head North to Carova and you can drive on the beach for +/- 11 miles. (4x4).
The farther north the less congestion. I've caught some nice Red Snapper in the surf Used to go to a place called Awful Arthur's for sea food and beers. Great T shirts. The Oregon Inlet was always a great place to drive the beach. Think there is a place called Dirty Dicks, fun place to eat. Enjoy Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Head south. Beaches from Frisco on down are great. Ocracoke even better. I'll never stay in NH/KDH/KH again.

Headed to Corolla with my entire family (mom's 60th B-day). We used to vacation there for years as kids, haven't been back in 20 years. I'm sure things will be different. My fondest memory was as a 5 year old, luring two (wild) horses into the foyer of our house with carrots. Parents were not pleased. |

Climbing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is something I highly recommend, but it is a no go with your 2 year old.

Went there for my honeymoon.
Stack Em High for breakfast Henry's is another decent choice for SOS. Tale of the Whale was excellent. Any of the light houses are awesome, I loved Cape Hatteras. Wright memorial was awesome, and pick a beach. |

Since no one mentioned it yet...
Biscuits n' Porn Leave the little one at home. |

Two suggestions......take the ferry ride to Ocracoke and eat in Wanchese. Hit up Oneal's and The Fisherman's Wharf. Great seafood!!

Another question fellas..... I have a 2015 4x4 tacoma. I'm confident in the sand with it..I looked around and it seems the beaches are closed to it this time of year. Is there still a designated area?

I'm almost positive Carova allows it year round, that's the only way to get to the houses is to drive on the beach!! I know there is a nice beach in Wilmington that allows you to drive on the beach, but I can't remember the name of it. I'm sure others will be along, but I've spent most of my time in Atlantic Beach area where you can't drive on the beach at all. |

Half due to the douchebags who flock there from up north; the other half by the US Park Service fucking with thousands of people's vacations over a fucking beetle or a bird. |

So far I've caught 3 skates, a sand shark, and 2 croakers...but I'm getting plenty of Sun and expensive beer.......and I went to Owens tonight. Great food.

20 pound test, swivel, dual hooks on leader with 3 or 3.5 weights - shrimp on each
Spots are small but good eats |

Noted sir...making a trip to the tackle store in the morning for fresh bait.

Mama Kwan's Fish Tacos.
Breakfast at Bob's Eat and get The Hell Out Climb Kill Devil Hill at sunset. Buy your daughter a cheap kite at Kitty Hawk Kites. If you have 4WD, air down and spend the day on the beach at Oregon Inlet. But your lunch at what we call the Kind Exxon (The Exxon station at Carlton and Hwy 12) Bodie Island Lighthouse Take the free ferry down to Hatteras and see the lighthouse. Ack! Traffic start backing up, around lunch time, to get onto the OBX. It has backed up to Grandy and farther at times. Getting off the OBX, morning exodus starts around 9 am, and gets worse as the day progresses. The Beach Road is your friend. The 5 lane 158 is a nightmare when attempting to turn a cross traffic. Lock up your car, many thieves check tourist vehicles at night to steal the contents. Enjoy the Beach, and if you have had anything to drink, call a cab. Law Enforcement down there is no joke when it comes to Impaired Drivers. A cab ride both ways is much less expensive than the prospect of the DWI conviction.
