I always thought Neil "Spyder" Giraldo, lead guitar for Pat Benatar, was a good under-appreciated player. Not flashy, but fine.

Some more of my faves "lesser-knowns":

Skunk Baxter - Best known for his soulful and precise work with Steely Dan and the Doobie Bros.

Terry Kath - Chicago. Jimi Hendrix once said, "I hope that some day I can be as good as this cat."

Mahavishnu John McGlaughlin. - Simply amazing talent. Not everyone's cup of tea, though.

Al DiMeola - His work with Return To Forever never ceases to amaze.

being a drummer, Mahavishnu caught my eye. As in Billy Cobham???

There are three country guitarists who come to mind-

Jerry Donahue
Will Ray
Jon Jorgenson

AKA The Hellecasters

Three country sessions players who SHRED. Find a copy of "Return of the Hellecasters"..it's jaw dropping.

Another guy who does not get credit outside of the Jazz world is Joe Pass. He had the ability to sound like 2 or 3 guitar players at once while playing solo and could tear it up improvising.

If you're going to post a Danny Gatton video, it has to be this one where he plays slide with an open beer and then continues to play with a towel over his hand while he wipes off his guitar.

Tommy Crook.  This first video is him at a local Thai restaurant where he has a standing gig.  Chet Atkins told Johnny Carson on the Tonight show that Tommy Crook was the best guitarist he knew.  The bass player in this video is Bill Rafensperber who plays with J.J. Cale's band.

a lot of talent out there. Frank Marino is a good example. Steve Morse who used to be with The Dregs of the Earth is pretty amazing too.

Steve Morse won Guitar Player magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" so many times in a row, they banned him from winning it again.  I've been a huge Morse/Dregs fan since about 1978, when I first saw them in a little club in Columbia, SC.  One of the highlights of my life was meeting him at an EAA fly-in.  He's a pilot, and was in the middle of a jet build.  Super-nice guy.  Very humble and real.  I tried hard not to act like a groupie...
BTW - It's the "Dixie Dregs."

I had the good fortune of seeing Roy live several times when I lived in VA. Also met him once after a show. He never got mainstream recognition, but it doesn't seem like he wanted that. He always had a loyal following anyway. RIP Roy..... the Master of the Telecaster.

Saw Roy in Tokyo, around '77 I think it was. Incredible.  He was unique.  Sad loss.

Buckethead

I agree, they guy can play. I found this on wikipedia and thought is was funny

In an interview with Revolver, Ozzy Osbourne stated that he had offered to have Buckethead play guitar in his band at Ozzfest. Ozzy quickly changed his mind after meeting with him, and realizing that Buckethead would not remove his costume in order to be accepted by Ozzy, said:

"I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me, but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later, and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing! I said, 'Look, just be yourself.' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up'? Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker."[26]
