May have been mentioned before, got tired of reading all the quotes, sorry.

You the wireless box owner will be held responsible IF someone uses you connection to download music without paying, downloading kiddy porn, or they do some hacking  through your box.

Oh yeah, It is not illegal for someone to use your wireless connection if you leave it open to use.

Now don't that make your day, maybe reconsider being "nice" by leaving it open you are just setting yourself up....................

The six dumbest ways to secure a wireless LAN

Of course you realize that we are talking about a personal network here, not the protection of nuclear launch codes.

I turn on mac filtering, WPA and turn off the SSID broadcast, and that's good enough to lock out the average person.  There isn't a whole lot to be gained from breaking into my personal network, certainty not enough to be gained to make it worth the effort of cracking through my protection, especially when there are a lot more unprotected networks out there.

If I was running a business, or had top secret information on my network, sure I would better protect it,  but as it stands why bother with anything more?

Also...

Use a restrictive subnet mask and limit the scope on your DHCP server or turn it off all together.  Most home wireless routers will let you do this...

All this should keep the average joe bag o donuts from leaching on your connection or breaking into your shit...

If you are really concerned about people getting into your crap, why not buy a cheap VPN concentrator and tunnel back to your wired connection...

Just activate the WEP security

WEP is easy to break if one knows how. MAC address filters are much harder, but still can be fooled with enough time invested.

Bingo! MAC address access lists are pretty much the best thing to do. You'll keep out "anyone and everyone".

There was a girl next door that her sister was misplaced by Katrina. We let her use our key to do her telecommuting for school work.
Now the sister and mother are pissed off because I changed the key and told them to get their own cable connection.

They're OWED it, man, they're OWED it!

As for me, I've always run cat5, and always will run ethernet cable. I don't trust any wireless connection out there.

You have to endure advertising to listen to the radio or watch broadcast TV.  I cant force someone to watch ads for X10 or nasty porn sites if they leech my wireless.
