if that is the 3 shot group at 100, you need to invest in a decent barrel Yeah, that's a pretty weak group, especially if there is actually $3,000 into it.... Dam! I thought it was pretty good! I never shoot long range and just getting into it. I thought 1 MOA at 100 yards was considered good? Most any off the rack hunting rifle will do 1 MOA nowdays. That level of accuracy is not any great feat any longer. My Steyr McMillan Tactical HB would do better than that BEFORE I started handloading for it. However, your 1/2" group is actually quite good if you are using factory ammo. I recently sold a customer a LaRue Tactical OBR, and it will shoot around 1/2" at 100yds, with pretty much anything you put in it, and a ragged hole with match ammo or handloads. |

I am no sharpshooter, but if that really is a $3000 gun, which it can be, and you are a decent shot, you should be getting tighter groups. What ammo are you using? ETA, that is a pretty gun, but I don't think I would take that hunting with me. Pssst..........that isn't a Fudd rifle my man. |

With good quality ammo that is. |

Some bullets do not shoot as well at 100 as they do when they go to "sleep" at distance. |

Fuck these guys giving you shit OP, it's a damn nice rifle that will always be more accurate then you are (no offense). Practice with it as much as you can afford and you'll have those groups twice as small in no time. I'd paint the rifle and scope though, I don't dig that weird burnt bronze at all. Give it a bad ass krylon camo job then go wear it off. She's worth every bit of $3k as it sits, even if the GD internet sleuths can find it $200 cheaper or whatever.
Oh and I'm a member of the five-shot group "camp." I don't think three shot groups are as reliable as conventional wisdom holds but that's entirely up to you. I'd recommend that you search here for a thread called "the problem with 3 shot groups" however before you make the call either way. PS: if you don't have one now you need a decent spotting scope. You done got yourself a damn expensive new hobby if you weren't aware... Maybe even moreso then AR's. |

My new $4600 M1A SOCCOM can do groups like that. The gunshop guy told me so, after he rang up my charge card. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/MolonLabe/Idiocy.jpg ![]()

ETA: the rifle didn't cost the OP $3k, either. It cost him a used AK ($1k?) and a used G19 ($400 ). Sounds like a pretty decent deal. OP, get your buddy to post his new $5k rifle, so he can get a little gang-raped, too. ![]() This, and I think you are being a little generous with your $1000 appraisal for the garbage can gun, even in today's market (not sure what prices for AKs, ARs, etc... are going for in Colorado these days post dumb ass reactionary libertard anti-2A gun laws). I assumed OP's AK was perfect condition; the first average used one I saw was $875, so I bumped it up a bit. even at $1k value on the AK, the 700 was a decent deal. agreed, say the AK is at $875 value then it is even a better deal. Many people aren't understanding that the OP didn't say the 700 was worth $3K, or that he paid $3K. Garbage can AK + hand held grenade for a Remmy 700 OP, and the first fucking sentence: I traded one of my Arsenal SAS-M7's AK47's and a Glock 19 for this Remington 700

True.....a good hunting rifle will shoot half inch groups with handloads and a little tuning. This. My off the shelf Browning does 1/3 in groups at 100. After spending a year tuning ammo to it. |

Or competition standings. All these ".25 MOA all day" guns would fucking sweep a BR or F-Class competition. |

No offense OP but you got raped. You have a stock 700 with a bunch of farkles on it. This is a 5 shot group at 100 yards. The object next to it is a dime. This is what you should be seeing out of a $3000 rifle. http://www.extremefirepower.com/images/rstarget.jpg My recommendation is to send it to a good builder and have them true the action, put a Kreiger barrel on it chambered with a "175 Match" reamer at a thousandth over minimum. Cut the barrel to 24 inches and put all the crap back on. Is the stock bedded or did your buddy just slap it on? How the fuck can you recommend anything? You know nothing about the rifle, the ammo used, the conditions it was shot in, or the experience of the the shooter. Um... two decades of rifle building experience. On top of that's a stock Remington barreled action with a stock Remington profile barrel. I see guys all the time throwing down set ups like this and they get angry when they don't perform. They throw the money into crap they don't need. Get a good action, good barrel, solid stock and good glass. That is that basis for a precision long range rifle. So, that's how I can fucking make a recommendation. |

No kidding, from some of the responses here you'd think these rifles shoot groups by themselves. Obviously, my response went way over your heads...

I traded one of my Arsenal SAS-M7's AK47's and a Glock 19 for this Remington 700. The original owner was into long range shooting and has $3,000 into this rig and he has 400 rounds through it. It is chambered in 308 and has a Bell and Carlson stock, timney trigger, custom made muzzle break, Burris XTR scope, Wyatt mag system and a few other things I can't remember. The below group is the first 3 shot group I got with it and is about 1/2" at 100 yards. It is my first decent long range bolt gun and should be a lot of fun! I already shot an antelope at exactly 550 yards with it. Picture soon to come. Don't worry, I still have a few other SAS-M7's and other AK's and a few Glock 19's to back me up still....LOL. So you think it was a good deal? Only complaint is it is one heavy pig! Carrying it in the field all day hunting, it got very heavy! The reason my friend traded it to me was because he just built another 700 and put $5,000 into it!!! So thins one was not good enough for him any longer...LOL!!! http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/SkagSig40/100_4112_zpsde452fa8.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/SkagSig40/100_4111_zps75386c2a.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/SkagSig40/100_4113_zps3860ed64.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/SkagSig40/100_4119_zpsbcf2f28e.jpg i like the set up a lot. very nice ! ! ! ! , but not the scope color. it looks like it shoots well.... try some different ammo.....you should be able to get better than a 1/2 inch at 100 yards. i can do that with my stock LTR, and model 7, XCR, with no trouble. happy shooting ! |
Those aren't 3K custom Remmy groups they are $700 savage groups......oh wait....same thing.
If it shot that well for 5, 5 shot groups then yeah it's a nice gun. But half inchers @100 are possible out of pretty much any decent rifle. Maybe not common but possible. hang a scope target and shoot 5 groups on it, each corner and the center, post it up. If they are all that good, you have something. Not 3 grand worth of something but better than most rack guns. a 3K bolt gun done correctly will shoot bug holes every time, at least any bolt gun I spend 3K on. |

Heavy bullets from rifles with fast twist barrels will often shoot better at a greater distance. The best load in my 30-338 is one MOA at 100, and 1/3-1/2 MOA at 600-1000. |

You just got the gun, yet already shot an antelope with it? Where the hell in CO is it antelope season in May? Something doesn't pass the smell test here..... That is because I borrowed the gun in October to hunt with because I did not have a rifle for hunting. Then we did the trade after the hunting trip. I'm just now getting around to posting about it. Antelope pictures are on my old phone and I have to figure out how to get them off and on to my computer. |

Don't care what anyone says, there are some $600 rifles off the shelf that will shoot a dime-sized group at 100 yards, right out of the box. With Hornady Match A-Max rounds or similar (I'm not sure what's similar), you can punch the same hole repeatedly if you're even a half-assed shooter.
Ballistics and rifle-making has progressed to a point that is well beyond what it used to be. |

A half inch group at 100 yards isn't anything to sneer at. That to me is indicative of adequate accuracy from the rifle itself as well as adequate marksmanship by the shooter. Sure, there are great shooters out there who can do much better. But in reality, those who can do so are probably relatively few in number. For someone that isn't a trained sniper or experienced competition shooter, that is an excellent group. And any rifle/user combo that can shoot half inch size groups at 100 yards can most certainly pose a lethal threat against man size targets out to 700 or even 800 yards. So while the op may not possess Carlos Hathcock type skills, for an average rifleman (which most of us are), I'd say that's pretty good shooting. This |

But they will not do it each and every time you try to shoot a group. Dime-sized 5 shot groups are not common with even high quality rifles. |
| Some folks asked who made the muzzle break. Keith at Rocky Mountain Shooters Supply in Fort Collins did and I believe it was around $200. It is fit so well you can not feel the mating sufraces at all, It is seamless. I'll get the receipts from him to see exactly what this rig costs. We went over them before and it was just under $3,000. |

OP, this 700 is pretty similar. A B&C stock and the same bottom metal. Works like a charm. Leupold VXIII scope. edit: This target is 5 shots at 100yd, the longest range I have immediate access to. |

Nah, it is well known in long range shooting circles that some bullets go to sleep after 300 yards or better, and are more accurate at distance than close range. My experience is long for caliber bullets, such as vld's, will do this. The theory is that they settle down with less "wobble" at distance. |

$3,000 my ass I dropped close to $3500 on a custom Rem 700, nothing fancy like this one. Just a good stock, custom trigger, upgraded extractor, muzzle brake and a 30" barrel. Optics (SWA 5x25-50 mil dot) and mounts were over 1/3 of the price. It gets expensive really quick to get a custom gun built these days these days. eta: If you can get hold of a lead sled to use for your sight-in work, it might show the gun is shooting better than the shooter to give you an idea of which item needs to be worked on. If the gun is held on-target with absolutely no variance from the shooter it will give you a definitive starting point. Switching to hand loads or match ammo for your sighting work to find the gun's true accuracy capability will probably help. |
I never shoot long range and just getting into it. I thought 1 MOA at 100 yards was considered good?
