[ARCHIVED THREAD] - My "new" tricked out Remington 700 (Page 2 of 8)
| So you were able to unload an AK and get rid of a Glock in exchange of a scoped Rem 700.... I think you did all right. The group looks good to me, especially since you haven't even practiced with it yet. Some more trigger time and I bet you'll see those groups close up. Good job OP. |

Enjoy your new rig, and despite all of David Tubb's troll accounts in this thread, that isn't a bad group. Keep shooting, you have a good gun to learn on. I don't think .5moa is bad... But the posts I'm seeing (including mine) are suggesting they could be even better. And with 5 shot groups to boot. It's what passes for encouragement in GD. |

He traded $1200 of guns for a real nice one. Props for that. |

Half MOA with factory ammo in a new barrel? You're doing just fine. Start shooting 5 shot groups, leaves a little less to chance. This rifle shoots substantially better than my Larue OBR did, which everyone on this site salivates over.
I swear this site gets more ridiculous everyday. A half inch group should be considered fine by any standards with someone just starting out. |

Either your bullshiting or you spent $1000's on it. Same with a Savage .22, it's impossible! |

if that is the 3 shot group at 100, you need to invest in a decent barrel Yeah, that's a pretty weak group, especially if there is actually $3,000 into it.... Dam! I thought it was pretty good! I never shoot long range and just getting into it. I thought 1 MOA at 100 yards was considered good?yeah, and I'll bet if that pronghorn was alive it would laughing at you...oh, yeah, you apparently killed it at 500+ yards. ETA: the rifle didn't cost the OP $3k, either. It cost him a used AK ($1k?) and a used G19 ($400 ). Sounds like a pretty decent deal. OP, get your buddy to post his new $5k rifle, so he can get a little gang-raped, too.

I guess for common people its ok, and a decent standard...but for the elite of the firearms community, it is beneath us. |

for a hunting rifle While a lot are slamming you for the deal. The Scout Snipers of the board seem to forget it's as much the person behind the trigger as it is the tools used. I'd be jazzed with groups like that using factory ammo too. Now tune some loads to the gun, move the target out past 400 and go to town. |

Enjoy your new rig, and despite all of David Tubb's troll accounts in this thread, that isn't a bad group. Keep shooting, you have a good gun to learn on. I'm always surprised to read about all the stock .5MOA guns on Arfcom. It seems like they are a dime a dozen. |

No offense OP but you got raped. You have a stock 700 with a bunch of farkles on it. This is a 5 shot group at 100 yards. The object next to it is a dime. This is what you should be seeing out of a $3000 rifle. http://www.extremefirepower.com/images/rstarget.jpg My recommendation is to send it to a good builder and have them true the action, put a Kreiger barrel on it chambered with a "175 Match" reamer at a thousandth over minimum. Cut the barrel to 24 inches and put all the crap back on. Is the stock bedded or did your buddy just slap it on? How the fuck can you recommend anything? You know nothing about the rifle, the ammo used, the conditions it was shot in, or the experience of the the shooter. |

Dime sized cloverleafs with just three rounds. Find/reload ammo it likes. Not crapping on you at all but I had a .308 sporter built on a 700 action back in the late 80s that will do much better than that even today. Good luck. |

Morning GD rage. Neat rifle, OP, I wouldn't feel bad about that deal at all. And it's a great group. PRO TIP.... Never post a 3-shot group in GD. It, your rifle and you will be shit on instantly. This is listed in the fine print at the bottom of the site's COC.

A half inch group at 100 yards isn't anything to sneer at. That to me is indicative of adequate accuracy from the rifle itself as well as adequate marksmanship by the shooter. Sure, there are great shooters out there who can do much better. But in reality, those who can do so are probably relatively few in number. For someone that isn't a trained sniper or experienced competition shooter, that is an excellent group. And any rifle/user combo that can shoot half inch size groups at 100 yards can most certainly pose a lethal threat against man size targets out to 700 or even 800 yards. So while the op may not possess Carlos Hathcock type skills, for an average rifleman (which most of us are), I'd say that's pretty good shooting. I came to post this..after reading some of the "that's a horrible grouping crowd" their lack of reality is showing.... |

if that is the 3 shot group at 100, you need to invest in a decent barrel Horseshit. Without any background info to better explain that group, your gonna fly off the handle with...."Needs a new barrel". Dumb. That is only a 3- shot string, virtually worthless. Also, no info on the ammo used; if M80 ball was used then that is a fantastic group. Also, I can put my 7 year old daughter behind the trigger and magically the rifle looks to be worthless for accuracy. Hmmmm. Looking at one pic and going retard on the barrel is like putting a soccer mom behind a F1 race car, filling it up with 89 ethanol octane gas and insisting on more better tires because her lap split times are slower than everyone else's. |

3 shot groups are common with rifles you don't want a lot of heat in the barrel, that's what causes throat erosion I kinda wondered about the five round group thing. Three rounds is all I shoot with my sporter weight barrel. I don't know what the standard is with heavy barrels. |

Damn Op you got a heck of a deal. Of course everybody with the 12in dicks and supermodel wives can shoot .2 MOA, but i think you did pretty good. Just need some more practice and it will tighten up.
The true potential of a gun can only be realized when it's clamped into a shooting vise on a benchrest. OP's gun may shot one ragged hole all day long....no one here on this forum knows if it doesn't or does. OP, if your going to get into long range shooting invest in a good benchrest shooting vise. That way when you test certain ammo or loads you can be completly sure of the groups the gun is shooting. It will eliminate shooter error, once you know what ammo/load shoots the best in that particular rifle then you can work on your shooting skills. |

I assumed OP's AK was perfect condition; the first average used one I saw was $875, so I bumped it up a bit. even at $1k value on the AK, the 700 was a decent deal. |

I am no sharpshooter, but if that really is a $3000 gun, which it can be, and you are a decent shot, you should be getting tighter groups. What ammo are you using? ETA, that is a pretty gun, but I don't think I would take that hunting with me. |

With 308, a single hole barely wider than the bullet @ that price. I cant do it w/o a benchrest type setup, but I've seen it done prone w/ a bipod by a good shooter w/ a heavy barrel like that. |

That's aint cheap glass and not exactly a $600 out of the box gun. Last bolt gun I had was a 700 in .270 w/ a 4-10x Leupold from a sporting goods store. It shot groups like that all day long. I think I had $800 in it total. |
