Mormons claim to know where the battles of Nephites and Lamanites  took place (Hill Cumorah),  purchased some of the land where it supposedly occurred,  and yet no surveys or digs have ever been publicly published. Hmm.

Good luck ever seeing this question answered honestly.

I'm sure somebody more studious, devout, whatever than I am will chime in, but the short answer to your question is yes. In the Book of Mormon the Lamanites essentially wipe out the Nephites. The Book of Mormon ends around 400AD and it is a commonly held belief amongst Mormons that Native Americans are descendents from the Lamanites.

Having said that, I think I've read that genetic research has disproven that a bit and claims Native Americans are not of Middle Eastern descent (i.e. Israelites).

I guess I can pose this question here:

Why do Mormons seem to hate Trump so much, and is it because his wife has sexy pics on the interwebs?  (I know I live in Utah so I should know but I try not to ask people around me the things I would ask on arfcom)

Funny, most of the people I consider close friends are LDS, and I regularly attend their church as someone who does *not* subscribe some of the most strict tenets of LDS faith. To a person they have treated me with kindness and respect, without being given anything but the same in return. Take that for what it's worth, but know it's true.

They are just sucking you in to get you to sign your assets over to the church when you die.

Why lie?
Do you mean me? I didn't/don't lie about anything. I talked at some length with the guys who first brought me to service, and they knew my beliefs well by then. Anyone at church who asks (and I'm sure everyone else by now) knows where I stand. I genuinely enjoy the services as well as the company of the church, even if I don't believe the teachings literally in some/many cases. They don't seem to mind, so why should I? Maybe they're hoping I "come around", and maybe I will, or maybe I won't. But no one is pressuring me, and I've made some great friends who don't seem to care either way.

EVERY group of individuals will have its bad apples, I get that.
But I would be interested in hearing what those (who know more about LDS than I) have to say about that man's opinions

He truly thought that the death of thousands was not only justified, but preferable and welcome.

No different than Christians. They believe that the deaths of the defenseless men, women, and children who resided in Sodom and Gomorrah was justified and welcomed.

More than that, Christians believe that genocide on a planetary scale -- the slaughter of nearly every human on Earth -- is justified and praiseworthy when done by God.

I can respect people who're at least honest with themselves. I can understand the cultural/social/tribal reasons to claim the label, but to actually believe some of those claims (in the face of good objective evidence)?

To try to use DNA when it's convenient but not when it's not convenient? We have tons of good objective evidence (DNA, fossil record, etc.) that we evolved, people still reject it.

Was the Fall also allegorical, then? How do Catholics square an allegorical Genesis with a literal original sin? One would think that would also be allegorical. With no literal original sin, there's no real sacrifice.

Interesting.  How do mormon's deal with the inconvenient genetic research discrepencies?

I dunno.  How do Jews, Christians, and Muslims deal with the inconvenient genetic research discrepancies in the story of Adam and Eve?

Most of us Catholics dont take the creation story and the bit about adam and eve as literal but rather allegorical.

Yeah, it's interesting how the various Christian sects pick and choose which parts of the Bible they take as literal.

If you're going to insist that some parts are fiction, how can any of it be trusted as being fact?

Negative, the Algonquian speaking tribes have Jewish DNA.

Proof?

They certainly would fit the modern definition of a Pedophile so there is that.

Isn't that called moral relativism?

I don't know shit from shinola about past LDS history. But I do know that I have Mormon friends that I hold in very high regard. I have learned many useful things from them and they seem to have high morals and values. Good people. To me, that's all that matters.

Here's the real question. Are Catholics better than Mormons? And go.

Are we talking BYU vs Notre Dame football.

If that's the case, Catholics.

Sorry but ND is my favorite college team. Even after serving with Austin Collie.

If an entire tribe of people who were picky about interbreeding and keeping a certain bloodline, completely left an area 2600 years ago would there still be evidence in that place of origin? Not LDS, just making an argument...

Thats nothing unique to the Mormons. Hell, the Lutherans did that in the 1500's
The Munster Rebelliion
To be fair it was an offshoot of the Lutherans known as the Anabaptist's and even Martin Luther thought they were nutty.

Was the Fall also allegorical, then? How do Catholics square an allegorical Genesis with a literal original sin? One would think that would also be allegorical. With no literal original sin, there's no real sacrifice.

I've always see original sin referring to early humanity as a whole, not some bitch eating an apple.
The failing of humanity can be real but the story of it told in a simplified, allegorical fashion to teach a lesson about being obedient to God.

Thats where faith comes in.
If we had solid, concrete proof of everything in the Bible then it would be taught in history classes, not as a religion.

At the end of the day faith in God helps me lead a better life, and to me thats the important part.

I assume the same thing anyone does with ANY religion.
