Challenger for sketchiest.  Also falling in love with that Taco, it goes anywhere and makes it look effortless.

I am surprised he doesn't tear cars up when they have no recovery points except that threaded eye bolt behind a small cutout in the bumper. I do notice he takes it real easy on those though.

Thanks to Arfcom I have gone the rabbit hole. Been watching vids all evening. It’s amazing all the out of towners  in rentals that get stuck. The side by sides he picks up usually don’t look cheap to fix.

LOL!! Me too! Great vids! Brings back some interesting memories in my wheeling days

Can’t believe that mud covered in salt shit. That’s nuts. We don’t have anything like that out here.
You know what you’re getting into.

I got sucked in a bit myself. Interesting to see what can get stuck where... but that sand out there looks brutal AF.

why does that stay so muddy?  i thought it was one of the driest areas in the country with temps regularly getting up past 100.

forgive my ignorance but i just thought pretty much any moisture would have evaporated

It was really tempting to go back and get it.

But it was the spring after we got burned and being outdoors was really hard, so we moved into town a few weeks after that.  It's hard to be employed as a carpenter or farm help when you can't use your hands or be outside.

But yeah, a cougar kitten would have been incredible.

Not sure, but I'd guess the mud is pretty deep and the dry crust on top just holds the moisture in.

Also a lot of groundwater because it's basically the same elevation as the Great Salt Lake.  So you're right, the crust holds it in really well, and there's a lot of water from underneath.

Useless, nasty, liquid salt type water, but still wet enough to make a mess.

My son got his jeep stuck in that same lake. That was a long damned day.

The sheriff we talked to said somebody gets stuck out there like once a week.

My side gig is I work as a towing and recovery operator, I subscribe to Matt's channel and watch all of his videos both because I'm interested in the industry and because seeing how other people work helps me learn new tricks and techniques that I can use. I can't say that I would always do things the same way he does, he uses kinetic ropes for most of his recoveries and my strong preference is to rely pretty much exclusively on a winch from a place with a lot of holding power...but he's the one with all the experience in the sand/offroad environment and it obviously works for him and he generally treats things very gently. Even with differences in how I'd approach recoveries I still think Matt's a great operator and would defer to him in the offroad environment almost every time. There's a couple other really great longer format towing/recovery youtubers that make fantastic towing/recovery content...I really like Ron Pratt down in Scott City, MO and Pepe's Towing Service in Los Angeles, they see some wild stuff.

I'm always surprised people bring their own cars onto the salt.  I wouldn't want to throw that much of the stuff up into every crevice of the underside of my body, frame, suspension, brakes, etc.

"Oh, just wash the undercarriage."

You'll never, ever get that salt out of some places.

I'd rent a car and go drive there.  To hell with bringing my own car out.

I spent 10 years living within 50 miles of that goop.  I was actually pretty close to where they got stuck.  Lots of people go out to that area and simply don't understand how easy it is to get into a life-or-death situation.  It hit 120 degrees near the salt flats, there are roads everywhere and the Confusion mountain range is incredibly appropriately named, even for someone that is in them every weekend.

I won't say one bad thing about getting stuck out there, it's easy to do.

This for sure.  I spent every other weekend out there during 2013.  Almost got stuck a couple of times.  I used to ease into the Silver Mountains byway (desert dirt road) in 2WD and always tested the traction and build-up of goop on the tires.  A couple of times my truck started to sink and zero traction.  Luckily I could back out in 4WD to escape.

That area will kill you sure as shit if you fuck up. Looking back, I was an idiot going out there by myself.  Always carried enough survival gear so I could hike out if needed, but a 40-50 mile walk wouldnt be fun.

One time I was about 40-50 miles north of I-80 and a big ass storm came in.  70mph winds and a shit ton of rain.  On the way back, a part of the road had washed away leaving a 50 foot wide by 20 foot deep hole.  Had to backtrack and go off-road for about 20 miles to find a way out.

But, its a beautiful area with lots of remoteness if you like that.  Expended plenty of bullets there

We just spent a week vacationing in his ao, its some beautiful country. He has an episode where he addresses a lot of subscriber questions and one of the things he talks about is the blow sand in that area - it’s no joke, that sand will suck you in and hold on to your rig with a death grip! Fortunately I was only a witness to it and not a participant.

Plus all the land everyone has to play on.

Man, that really makes me miss my old 5.9 GC with 3.5" lift.  It would do crazy torque wheelies.  It was a luxury car, muscle car, and serious off roader all rolled into one.

I just had flashbacks to An Najaf Irag, August 2004...

The is a dry lake outside of the old city, one of our scout teams (or may have been a USMC team) got a HMMWV mired worse than that Taco.

I was a BFV Section leader at the time and got FRAGO'ed to escort an M88 to recover the HMMWV and team.  Got that same feeling when we got on the lake bed as in the video... 28 tons of M2A3 Bradley giving all she got to maintain forward momentum. When we made contact, I was was providing overwatch while the M88 went to work recovering the truck. As soon as they started pulling, the M88 broke through the crust and sank right in.

The mechanics got the bright idea to use my Bradley as an anchor to winch themselves out. This worked exactly as expected, and my Brad got mired to the point that you could step off the side armor onto tjr lakebed.

By this point, the JAM (Mahdi Militia) fighters start lobbing mortars at us, which turned out not so bad. They weren't very good with getting round on target without walking them in... when the mortars impacted the lakebed, they would sink deep into the mud resulting in a nice brown geyser if it the round actually detonated (some didn't).

I think that recovery mission ended up taking like 12-18hours before everything got unfucked.

I know, CSB... but thanks for bringing back memories of some fun experiences.

He definitely knows his stuff when it comes to traversing those trails. Too much pucker factor for me, I would at least have to have a cage in that Jeep. Sometimes you see a Warn winch, and other times a HF Badland.
