This is actually one of the things I like most about that site, if a guy that has BTDT says something, you can weigh it against the guy that just bought it because it was on sale and seen it in X magazine

The amount of uneducated (unsubstantiated) advice around here can be overwhelming at times. Just yesterday I was reading a thread where a guy was asking questions about a possible rare Colt, some jerk off chimed in something to the effect "super rare, you messed up by not getting it" so the OP runs back to the show and picks up the POS fake and looses a few hundred bucks due to this jerk off. I asked a question in the tech forum several months ago and I received several replies telling me I was wasting my time asking the question, if I had to ask, the answer was beyond my comprehension - I did receive several good replies though which keeps me (and others I am sure) here. ETA: The good guys that is

This place is full of good guys, its the few bad apples that ruin it for the rest of us... Rant off...

You have every right to own a LMT or Colt but in the US a Hesse or Olympic Arms AR will do the job just fine. Your not in a combat zone bud.

it would kind of suck if I got up to take a pee in the middle of the night and found a couple of guys with butcher knives in the living room, shot one and had the bolt on my plinker break and spent the rest of the evening finding out if a cast receiver AR makes a good quarterstaff.

Rosenrot,

What the hell does being or not being in a combat zone have to do with predictable functionality of ones firearm?

You make zero sense. Truly.

I can read a manual for 15 min and learn how my weapon functions. I don't need to pay $500 and take a class to learn how to clear a jam or know how a weapon operates.

Whats also funny is how Grant hero worships Larry Vickers(yes i know who he is) and  Ken Hackathorn(yes i know who he is too).Grant allways seems to make some kind of comment on how he trains with them all the time. And that Ken and Larry tell him what a good shot he his and how well he can "move and shoot".I  Think M4 net is a very good site.. i just dont like that Grant runs most of show behind the scenes.

I usually manage to do both. In a Vickers course you will have some fun.

...you will also spend a bunch of time licking the windows and getting called on it. Hell, one of his favorite drills is called "The Humbler"....getting kicked in the nuts is no fun.

EDIT -- ...and neither is running a stress course in 100 degree weather with body armor on and a partner who somehow manages to get all of his spent brass in the neck opening of your shirt.

Shemagh helps prevent that. Yeah I remember the thread about non-HSLD types wearing a Shemagh being posers. It was a stupid thread and stupid attitude concerning a good peice of equipment.

You know, I've spent some time reading M4C today (inspired by this thread), and you know what I think?

I think it's an informative gun board, not much different than any other. I like their tech sections. GD is boring. I don't understand the resentment, honestly. They seem friendly enough, for the most part. If I had to complain, I'd say that many members go a little overboard in listing their bonafides (or lack thereof). Just say what you've got to say, and call it good.

Anyway, I found lots of info there, and the training class AAR's are decent reads if you're thinking about plopping down money on a class. Some guys (like our own JW777, in fact) do a great job taking notes and relaying what they learned to the rest of the forum. They're "different", but so is every forum. I think the place is just peachy, personally.

I'm not particularly interested in posting there, but there are some interesting threads to read.

Good post.

You mention that you don't understand the resentment.  I think that for the vast majority, there is no resentment.  Yes, I understand and accept that GoatBoy & Grant don't like each other.  Regardless, I and many others are active at both places, among other places.

Every forum has its quirks, but both arfcom & m4carbine have plenty of good points (including good members) that keep me active at each.

Reading the owner's manual for a Steinway does not make you a concert pianist.

Reading a medical textbook does not make you a surgeon.

While you may not want to be "an operator," I fail to see how learning more about your weapon and how to use are bad things.  If you do not seek proficiency and excellence in all that you do, I hope you don't drown in your own mediocrity.

What did Pat get the boot for?

I've heard part of the story.

Dunno the story, but I would have thought Pat would have surely gotten cut a little slack,  especially given the fact that the same Grant had gotten out of one of Pat's past classes pretty much unscathed, after he sent a cold range AD round into the rocks right between his own legs.

IIRC, that AD round was written off as an unfortunate cook-off ... you make the call.

In all fairness, LT didn't pony-up and pay to advertise over there, and TOS does consider that a $ticking point.

IIRC, his fees are based upon what the biggest firearms forum charges (AR15.com)  but with only a very small percentage of the traffic (>10%) ... and since we're milling this stuff out of a solid doing Aerospace work at what some (not all) consider blacksmith prices, then it just didn't make fiscal sense to us here to go that route, not to mention it would have been an "in-your-face" insult to the Avilas, which, unlike some, we eschew insulting the Avila family.

Some would call it between a rock and a hard place ... either way, we made our nest ...

ML

Again, another fine example of Grant's business "ethics."  He's a turd in a people suit.  Between his constant thread shitting here before he went away (as someone else mentioned earlier), his holier than thou attitude (literally and figuratively), and the whole price fixing thing, I refuse to buy anything form him even if it's free.  Unfortunately, he posts on another board of which I'm a member.  He's gawdawful annoying; always pushing the new flavor of the month (as defined by himself) or just interjecting himself into threads to spout of his knowledge.

OK, I feel better now.

I've actually had another member of this site question my sanity for wanting to get some training. And he's in the military no less. When I called him on it, one of his "fanboys" jumped to his defense. The whole thing kinda smelled like a "Zumbo" attitude.

I just chalked it up to them having a good case of the "mine's bigger" complex and went on.

I'd still love to take a carbine class with either Pat Rogers or Larry Vickers. Maybe I'll get a chance one day soon.

Something I've learned over the years both through training and through work in the church is that ego is an ever present threat to progress. People have a tendency to construct their entire mindset and self image around some core ideas and if you go touching some of those core concepts you're messing with deep primal forces that will often result in very hostile behavior.

You see it in church when you teach that Christians have a duty to financially support the church and help the needy. I've had people literally cuss me out in the middle of a Sunday School lesson for stating that simple truth. Think about that one for a minute: They were arguing that their Christian virtue was just fine using the F word SCREAMED at the top of their lungs...DURING CHURCH. Even hookers know better than that.

You see it on the internet when you mention that somebody's pet brand isn't as good as they think it is. I caught all sorts of hell when I first started mentioning that Glocks in calibers other than 9mm had some serious issues. I *STILL* catch hell about that despite the fact that I can point to lots of documentation of the issues. I even catch it every now and then from 1911 fanatics because I've stated many times that the 1911 has to be made properly to work and that lots of people out there making 1911's just flat don't get them right.

You see it in real life when you see some jackass behind the gun counter selling somebody a pistol gripped 20 guage with birdshot as the ultimate home defense weapon, or when you offer to do some basic level instruction for folks only to have them insist that they don't need to go to any "training" to know how to shoot.

Some people just get too much of themselves invested in this stuff and that makes any source of new or better information that comes along a threat to all they know and hold dear. This is what causes them to react as if you had slapped them and told them that their momma sells it on the street when you simply state that the reason why they can't hit anything with an AK is probably user error as opposed to the AK being an inaccurate piece of junk.

I try to avoid all of that by continually being aware of the limitations of my knowledge, skill, and experience. I don't know everything. You can fit what I know about the world into a thimble. You can fit what I know about weapons, tactics, and training into about 1/4 of a thimble. As a shooter, I suck. Occasionally I manage to pull off a pretty impressive feat or win a drill, but I also remember how much time I spend cussing myself out when I'm on the line for screwing up this or that.

Then, of course, things get a LOT more complicated and even nastier when money and reputation (which often translates to money) are on the line.

I'd still love to take a carbine class with either Pat Rogers or Larry Vickers. Maybe I'll get a chance one day soon.

Do whatever you can to accomplish that. I've never trained with Mr. Rogers but from what I understand he's a superb instructor.

I've taken several classes with Mr. Vickers and I am scheduled to take several more this year, including the "advanced" pistol/carbine course in South Hill Va. this weekend. Training dollars spent on a Vickers course are WELL SPENT indeed.

I dunno. Reading for a bit there, a lot of the membership seems to have adopted it as their own. That Rob guy made it on his own, but he does seem to want it to be attached to the site.

I'm not really sure what to make of it, really. I think it's too simplistic, unless you're just trying to convince somebody to buy a Colt (which isn't a bad thing, really). Honestly, I think our own little guide to buying a rifle is more informative. If anything, it allows the user to make a more informed decision.

Some folks - right or wrong - seem to regard that chart as some sort of religious artifact, or something.

if you spent more time over there... the chart is part of a series of very informative threads by rob_s...

another thread he has explains each of the features and what they mean to people (basically an explanation of the chart criteria)

and in yet another, he addresses "the buyer's remorse" when people see the chart...

the chart is not meant to say "your rifle fucking sucks, should have bought a colt" as most people who see it ASSume... the chart is a comparison of rifles to the TDP, so it only makes sense that Colt is at the far left...

i am so sick of all the whining when people see the chart... to me the chart just reinforces the fact that nearly all AR manufacturers cut corners and some of them in critical areas such as the BCG...

what people fail to realize is that there are some parts of the chart criteria that can be met with their DPMS or Bushmaster or RRA with about $10 worth of parts and 15 minutes of time... instead they'd rather have a pissing match...
