I remember being very young and wondering what all the fuss was about when gas was 90 cents a gallon......

74 9/10 in 1987-88 when I started driving. 1976 Chevy Monte Carlo w/350 CID went through a bunch of it too.

back in 1970 my brothers and I rode around in my Dad's Scamp bobbing up and down in the back seat with no seat belt looking for gas under a quarter and found a place.

I still remember when gas hit a buck a gal too. My father was drunk so my mother had to drive and we filled up for gas in KFalls, Oregon on our way back to California. It was Cold, cold cold when my father read how much the gas was he flew out of the car and strong armed the kid pumping the gas against the pump and went into a triad about Jimmy Carter and the Iranians. I was scared to death that he would either die of hypothermia or be arrested.

About .25 a gallon, I think my mom put like $5.75 in her Nova and was complaining about the price.

I was looking for a chart showing gas prices over time and this site turned out to have useful info. Consider what your income might have been at the time.

In 1960 -

Cost of a new home: $16,500.00
Cost of a first-class stamp: $0.04
Cost of a gallon of regular gas: $0.31
Cost of a dozen eggs: $0.57
Cost of a gallon of Milk: $0.49

Here's a better chart, adjusting for inflation.

22yrs old, and I remember 76cent gas in Russellville, AR on a road trip when I was 16. I remember when gas went up to $1.40 in 2000 and thinking "Shit, everything I earn goes to just going to work."

Around $.25 when I was in high school. People would buy $2 worth of gas. If you had $5 you had enough to take a girl to a show and get something to eat.

I remember gas hitting 75 cents a gallon and people screaming.

I was going to quit smoking when cigarettes hit $1/pack.

And I am not that old... (well, I don't think I am...)

Talk about inflation. Bill Cosby's act "My Brother Russell Whom I slept with" talked about begging his mother for a nickel. My kids rarely ask for anything under $20 bucks.

and in 1969 .35 a gallon for Sunoco 360 super premium

under $2.00/gallon days are gone for good I'm afraid

At teh "Bomber". An authentic World War II B17G bomber. Located on McLoughlin Boulevard, it serves as a local landmark and a reminder of the courageous men and women who served so valiantly during WWII.

The pumps were righ below the entire plane. The B17 is still there but pumps are long gone.

Pretty much. That's what it was whe I was pumping gas at a Texaco in NJ. Sicked me now when I see it heading back to $3.00/gal.

Of course... a pack of Marlboros were $1.50 then as well. Glad I quit.

19 cents for Sunoco 260 and 15 cents for the 190 (lawnmower gas) in 1970. Summer job in Reading Pa. Washed the windows, checked the oil, and added 2 stroke oil to the tank for the funny ferrin' cars.

In S.E.Texas, it stayed at 19.9 for a long time.......in the 60's they would have "gas wars" on all the opposing corner stations, we need to bring that back!

As a beginning driver back then, i remember bitching when it went up to a quarter a gallon.

I filled up for 14 cents a gallon in spring of 2000. The clerk punched in the wrong price when he was updateding the prices. It was selling for 1.42 30 seconds later. The lowest normal price I have seen was 79 cents for regular in spring of 1999.

Yep, I used to drive to S. Georgia to get my gas at that price. It was worth the trip because Tallahassee was ALWAYS much higher.

In the late 60s I remember "gas wars" and my Dad driving to another part of town to get gas that was below 30 cents, maybe as little as 25 cents. Of course you could get a big Hershey Bar for five or ten cents back then too and a penny had some purchasing power.

13 cents during a price war at a DX station outside of Louisville 1969. I was taking flying lessons then and the price of avgas was .37 for 80 and .40 for 100 at Kentucky Flying Service. Never see those days again! Just ran through 90 bucks in my Chrysler this week.

Born in 1982, Lived in a suburb of atlanta since 1987

The lowest I remember gas was actually the late 90s when the oil companies had thoes terrible years. It was 46 cents a gallon for regular 87. There was a new gas station opening up along with 2 others and they decided to have a first week of operation price war

everyone else around the city had it for about 72 cents a gallon.

19.9 at the "cheap gas" stations, Pilot, Peer and the like in the 50's. Don't seem to remember much higher than 29.9 to mid 60's. The cheap gas stations are still around, its just that 1-2 cents a gallon doesn't impress as much today.
