I have a Rock River Varmit that I am absolutely in love with.  It's not the lightest gun there is, but IMO, it's damn near perfecttion.

Another you might consider is a Marlin camp carbine in 9 mm, IIRC those were pretty light and handy.  They are a bit expensive now and kind of ugly (saw the wall hanger criteria), but buy once cry once and all that.

I am specifically looking for something larger than 22LR but these caught my eye.

A Marlin 336 with the walnut stock replaced with a synthetic stock weighs only 6lbs. You're not going to find a "real" rifle that weighs much less than that.

Here is a 336Y Marlin –– 16" barrel and shortened stock compared to a regular 336. I like this one a lot but I think the recent build quality issues and it being 1lb heavier or more than others. I don't necessarily need a rifle round which is why I like the 357 lever. I wish SBRs were legal here because I would just cut something down... but I can't so I am limited.

.308 Grendal bolt action if you can find one.
BLR .308 is 6.5 pounds.  Ruger Scout is heavier.
Could look into the Remington synthetic pump with magazine feed 5.56.
FNAR with 16in lighter profile barrel certainly feels light but I don't know what it comes in at.
Win 95 feels light, again I don't know what the actual weight is.
Otherwise a lightweight build AR.
I think the BLR or Win 95 would lood the best hanging over the door.

Great choice.  Ruger also makes a .little 40S&W semiauto rifle, and Hipoint makes their infamous 9mm carbine.

I'd add the Marlin Papoose and the original Saiga in 7.62x39 (single stack mag) to the list.

The Marlin can be scoped so that is a plus if you want better sights than a Rossi can offer. The Ruger bolt 357 is not a gun to be trifled with either.

I was watching an older episode of Survivorman last night. Was the one where he goes off into the Canadian forest or whatever with his buddy Bob.

Only got a glance but Bob had some cool little piece strapped to his backpack to supplement his heavier hunting rifle/shotgun. Was in .410 and was, evidently light and damn handy. They got a squirrel and pheasant with it.

Didn't get a good look though. Kind of looked like a cheap T/C.

Also if you want a survival gun, then the taurus circut judge would be hard to beat, and I hate taurus.

.410 for small game, .45 LC for people/ predators. 5.3 lbs. This sucker is light and handy. Ballistics are also much better then the handgun.

CavArms lower (now sadly out of production as far as I know)
A1 style upper with 14.5" perma-Phantom

It's so light that even women and kids can easily "one-hand" it.  The trade of is that it has a surprisingly sharp recoil impulse, but as a rifle to carry a lot and shoot a little it's hard to beat.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I like some of the suggestions but the prices start getting crazy. E.g. IMI Timberwolks in 357/38 are going for crazy money on gunbroker. When you look at them you can tell they are $200 guns, not $700 guns. Whatever I get will most likely get scratched up and worked hard.

I am going to reflect on the thought of a pistol instead of a rifle. I sometimes carry around my Ruger Mk III with a SilencerCo SS Sparrow but I don't feel like it is my 'homestead gun.' Because it is a pistol and because it is only 22LR... that being said it is great to use the suppressor.

Those TC Hot Shots are neat looking... wish they made them in something else besides 22LR.

A Draco would be... fun. I bet I couldn't hit anything with it, however.

There are a lot of interesting lightweight rifles out there. I will not be going with this fishing pole, however.

How about a Paratus 16 they are relatively small and light, 9.2lbs, you can break it down, and put it in a backpack, they reassemble it in under a minute without any tools.

I don't have one yet but it is at the top of my to get list.

I may be partial because I just bought one and am still fondling it, but an underfolding AK seems like it would fit the bill. I got a Yugo M70ab2t:

(Not my photo, but exactly like my gun)

It's about 7.5lbs, but with a single-point sling it would be pretty damned handy. I've been carrying it back and forth between the house and my wife's store every day, and it's really not any more trouble than grabbing my laptop bag - and I carry that thing everywhere.

Marlin 25MN in 22 magnum would be a good fit. Personally I would build a 10/22 with a 16" Kidd light weight barrel and hogue overmold stock. Slap a 3-9x40 on it with a drop compensation reticle and go have fun.

I love my straight-stock 1894 carbine in .44. Peep sight makes it a very useful 100 yard gun. Slim, light, easy to carry and shoot.

For actual hunting I carry a T/C Encore. I find it great for offhand shooting and 7mm-08 has worked every time for me.

I usually use a factory 24" standard contour barrel - since it's a single shot it's still pretty compact and quick.
For the really strenuous duty I have a factory barrel cut to 16-1/4", using a 1-4 compact scope. That combination isn't as easy to hit with at long distance but it carries almost like a pistol.

You make a good point about hand guns but I might need to take a 100 yard shot at a coyote and I don't trust my abilities with a pistol that much.

I have a Rossi carbine in .44 mag that is very lite and compact, but still has the power and accuracy to reach out to 100 yards.
