Denzel Washington Liam Neeson Hugh Jackman Robert Downey Jr View Quote Not bad, except RDJ. Jackman is too short. Add Dwayne Johnson, Timothy Oliphant and Karl Urban, as previously mentioned. How about Russell Crowe? Another point - would the iconic S&W 29 be replaced by another big caliber gun? Perhaps an S&W 500 or a Deagle 50? |

I can only say, Clint was perfect for Dirty Harry...
Perfect, In every way... |

Lots of good suggestions here...so glad they outnumber the bad ones.
My hypothetical would be Bryan Cranston. I think, if nothing else, he has the voice and presence for it. I freely admit I am influenced solely by Breaking Bad on that one. |

Timothy Olyphant from "Justified". He even looks and walks like Clint
|

Since my first through fifth or sixth choices are already represented, maybe Benicio del Toro.

Russell Crowe could pull it off if it were set in the same era. Any remake set in today's world would fail.

Warren Oates a bit older at the time, but combine his characters from The Wild Bunch and The Poseidon Adventure you get a quite believable Ernest Borgnine Now? A few more: Guy Pearce (playing an opposite-day Ed Exley) I can't believe nobody said GARY OLDMAN yet Hugo Weaving |

Gary Oldman
Charlie Sheen Johnny Depp - in a different way Katey Sagal would be an interesting choice David Morse would nail it. Terry O'Quinn could do it. |

LET ME CHIME IN HERE!!!! NOBODY, BUT NOBODY, CAN TAKE HIS PLACE!! NOBODY!! On a side note, I met the guy once, hence the name in here.
Go ahead, make my day. Was it 5 shots or 6? |

Peter Faulk.
Dirty Harry Colombo for the win. Pardon me, I just have one more thing you see, now I must admit this has all been very exciting, Oh very exciting indeed. Fact of the matter Mrs Colombo won't believe it when I tell her at dinner tonight. Forgive, but in this excitement I seem to have forgotten just how many shots I have fired. Five, maybe it was six? Honestly can't say. However this revolver I am holding, you do see the revolver here, yes? Good, good, as I was saying this revolver has a lot of power. Unbelievable amounts I tell you. Why if I were to shoot at you it would most likely take your head clean off. How 'bout that huh? Clean off. So you see in this case I must ask you just one last question, last one then I will go, however my boss wouldn't be happy unless I ask you this...how lucky do you feel today, sir? Scale one to ten... |

He's old enough to be a credible pissy old detective who hates the new rules, and knows how to play an action role. He's "one of us", too. |

No. Even now, .44 magnum is the biggest gun I have heard of a cop carrying, and that is not common. Anyone who has shot one knows why. Not only is it enough of a handful to be tough to get good with, the weight gets uncomfortable REAL fast. Add the extra weight of a .500, .460 or Desert Eagle and you've got a problem. I carried a Desert Eagle. Once. For almost half an hour. And mine was the lightweight alloy frame. |

Question for those who think no modern actor could play him: Who else from that era could play Dirty Harry? Lee Marvin He be dead for a decade or two. He died at age 63 in 1987. Sure he would not have made it to "The Dead Pool" but the first Dirty Harry was 1971.. Magnum Force was 73 and The Enforcer was 76. Lee Marvin could have easily could have done the part. |

But keep in mind, according to Magnum Force, he loaded it with .44 Specials. Put magnums in it and he's still packing more power than most. Yes, Harry would carry bigger than the other guys, but we need to keep the movie credible(if a remake must happen), and I can't imagine an actor being credible in that role carrying one of the new super guns. Shit, even I have people ask why I'd ever want a gun as big as a .44, and I like them for hunting deer. |
