HealthDay News — Medical marijuana may carry infectious bacteria and fungi that can pose a life-threatening risk to cancer patients who use it to ease the side effects of chemotherapy, according to a study published online recently in Clinical Microbiology and Infection. Researchers from the University of California at Davis became aware of this risk when a patient developed a rare and incurable fungal infection after using aerosolized marijuana – raw, blended marijuana inhaled as a mist. The patient ultimately died from a lung infection due to the fungus Mucor, according to his physician, Joseph Tuscano, MD, a professor of internal medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the university. The patient had been using medical marijuana while he was receiving chemotherapy and stem cell therapy for cancer. To test their concern, the researchers had DNA analysis conducted to identify the fungi and bacteria contained in the samples from medical marijuana dispensaries. Several different families of dangerous fungi were found in the medical marijuana, including Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and Mucor. Bacteria found in the marijuana samples included Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. http://www.empr.com/news/marijuana-bacteria-fungal-mucor-aerosolized-mist/article/638387/ A rare fungal infection has killed a California man undergoing cancer treatment and it’s believed he got it from medical marijuana, CBS Los Angeles reports. The treatment left the man’s immune system compromised, but his death still surprised doctors because he was relatively young and his cancer was beatable. He was using medical marijuana to fend off the treatment’s effects. After his death, testing of 20 medical marijuana samples from across the state found the vast majority were contaminated with dangerous bacteria and fungi. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/contaminated-medical-marijuana-pot-believed-to-have-killed-cancer-patient/ /s

On here from time to time I notice the complete lack of understanding about medical Marijuana... I have a stepson who is a cancer survivor and has Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome.. My wife also has cancer..Diabetes and has suffered a stroke. The radiation treatments for her cancer killed the bones in her hip led to a fracture which later became severely infected almost killing her. After several surgeries she is now in a wheelchair awaiting yet another one. And dealing with severe pain.. As part of her treatment many doctors suggested medical marijuana... I remained skeptical... I can say this to any naysayers out there the benifits have been tremendous... The side affects almost nill And I have yet to meet a single medical professional that has a negative thing to say about its use... So there you have my experience Your anecdote is worthless. WORTHLESS. You obviously do not understand how science works, and how proper clinical trials are conducted. Drugs are not approved by means of casual stories told by patients. If they were, than the unorthodox cancer treatments like laetrile, a controversial alternative treatment made from apricot pits, would have been approved, because SOME patients CLAIMED that treatment did in fact help them. Just because sincere people like yourself tell STORIES about marijuana, or pancreatic enzymes, massages, prayer sessions, psychotherapy, coffee enemas, injections of a cell preparations made from sheep and cattle fetuses, and laetrile, does not mean that that shit, or marijuana should be released into the general prescribing formulary just because laymen say so!! The marijuana debate is fraught with emotionally laden controversy due to the fact that very many people want this drug that allows them to get high to become legalized. Because Congress classified cannabis and THC (one of the active compounds in cannabis) as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, there has been only limited research because Schedule I drugs are defined by Congress as having no medicinal value. Marijuana has not had to meet the rigorous standards required for other drugs prescribed by the medical community, so there is no standardization of the dose, and amounts of active ingredients vary. Marijuana contains approximately 66 active compounds with different properties, not all of which have been properly studied. No other drug would be allowed to be released for treatment with so many compounds and unknowns. As it is now, basically, patients smoke until they claim symptoms have eased. Meanwhile, burning marijuana produces toxins which can cause emphysema and lung cancer! OTOH, recreational users are the ones pushing the national reform of marijuana laws, while pushing the medical use of the drug ahead of themselves, like they're using patients as their human shields to quash debate on marijuana as a recreational drug for getting high as often as possible. Interesting in these debates as how it is not mentioned that in the last 20 years that THC levels in marijuana have skyrocketed due to demand from recreational users while the cannabidiol (CBD) "medicinal" compounds have concurrently reduced. What most people want from cannabis, is a smoke from a plant that provides a mind-altering experience. A few people and the doctors that pander to their needs are touting the variety of therapeutic uses for pain management or control of seizure disorders, etc. These patients need to be prescribed tested, proven drugs from the FDA approved formulary until nonpsychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) has proved itself under the rigor of the same drug trials demanded by any other therapeutic substance. Meanwhile, there are smarter ways to deal with marijuana than wholesale legalization, which threatens to expose us to unknown risks from the individuals that get high and their effect on society. |

If something seems too good to be true it probably is. There is a lot of disinformation about MJ and the beneficial effects are highly exaggerated. It is touted to be a cure for everything with zero side effects ever and I'm certain that all of you can understand that such claims are impossible. There has, however, been some encouraging research in nausea and spastic conditions (CP for example, glaucoma for another). I'm less for medical MJ as much for complete legalization that people can use to self medicate if they want. |

Or that the WoD believers want it to remain unknown? Or that there was such a slight difference in society that it appears unknown? Also, what right do you, or anyone, have to deny a free citizen the ability to ingest something that had no affect of your life? This question is asked in the spirit of "if it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my arm....". Please at least answer this question because I am sincerely curious. She took 9ml of the suspension and it brought her pain level down to the point it was a slight annoyance....with ZERO psychotropic effects. |

I am not against it. However, I do work in the criminal courts system in a quasi LEO profession.
I do see a lot of "We president now" arrest on it here when it becomes commonplace for medicinal use. We signed it in to law last week and it supposedly wont be up and running until 2019. IT is only approved in oil and gel form and maybe one other. No smokable bud. Will be interesting to watch what comes of it. |
