[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Legal weed as a medicine (Page 2 of 10)

I actually think you made it. The simple fact is, Cannabis has been Schedule I for the entire modern scientific era. The government has purposefully disallowed all medical research into the compounds in Cannabis. So we don't have a lot of scientific basis for its efficacy for any particular purpose. But there sure as shit is a ton of anecdotal data. |

Which legitimate drugs from which reputable pharmaceutical companies would you recommend for OP? |
|
I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and I know for a fact that marijauna (medical or otherwise) greatly helps with the symptoms. I have been told by one of the top experts in the world that he knows that marijauna greatly helps but he can not officially recommend it or do research on it because of its classification.
Since I work in the transportation industry I can not and do not use it. I would have no qualms about doing so if the situation was different. |

That is for the medical professionals to decide. I just know thru common sense that gambling with your life by relying on an illegal drug produced from questionable origins is probably not a good idea. What if it was laced with something dangerous?
It's a plant that grows out of the ground. Sure there are plenty of altered variants out there but they aren't "laced." Legal pot places aren't trying to kill their customers, might be bad for business. |

Like many things... follow the money. Why would drug companies lobby for a natural treatment for chemo symptoms, seizures, or even anxiety, if you can grow it in your back yard? Nail meet hammer... I could if legal grow what pain med my wife needs and never spend a dime on big pharma.... You don't need a lab or a chemistry degree to produce it.. And their profits would take a huge hit |
| I was in the same boat as the op. My wife is also currently battling breast cancer as well. After the first round of chemo she was violently throwing up and dry heaving for 5 days. Unable to keep anything down. She was severely dehydrated and I was grasping at straws, I didn't want to taker to the hospital for an IV and risk an infection. A friend brought over some weed and it immediately stopped all the vomiting and dry heaving. The effect was so dramatic I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it. None of the prescription drugs would touch it. I'm now a believer and my outlook on it has completely changed. |

There are many legitimate drugs produced by reputable pharmaceutical companies to help people with pain and appetite. I'm glad pot helped your relatives in this instance but pot isn't some magical cure all plant. You should rely on actual tried and true medications and not some drug grown out of some hippies basement. Hippies basement... It's legal in Illinois and is not grown in your uncles basement... Your credibility is greatly diminished |

I don't see why it can't be researched but i don't want to see people get high off of it. If they can remove the mind altering properties from it and create a medication that can make it thru a double blind placebo study then it gets my approval. |

Because it's Schedule I. It is not permitted for any research to take place. It is totally prohibited. Get it? There's two fundamental problems with smokable marijuana being approved for a medical use. 1) The fact it is smoked. FDA is, to put it politely, highly unlikely to approve ANY drug with a dosage form that must be ignited and the smoke inhaled. It's that pesky safety aspect of "safe and effective". 2) No pharma company will invest a few hundred million dollars in a smokable form due to both (1), and the fact that any damn fool can grow their own ditch weed and easily sidestep their patent monopoly. The closest you will ever see to an inhaled form approved by the FDA might be an inhaler/nebulizer/vaping type apparatus. Decriminalization is the best realistic option, IMO. |

I'm for the legalization of marijuana for both medicinal and recreational use. I say that as a person in my mid-thirties who has never used it. Really, I haven't. Ever.
As far as it being bad for you; alcohol and sugar are bad for you, should we ban them too? Lots of arfcommers abuse them, are they bad people? |

I don't understand the point of medical pot at all. Why are the active ingredients simply not extracted and used in medications like everything else? Why can't the active ingredients be synthesized like most drugs? The whole concept of medical pot seems like snake oil, given the state of the pharmaceutical industry. Who in their right mind would want to suck smoke into their lungs? . If it's a backdoor way to legalize weed they are doing it wrong because this method does not cut out the criminal element. If pot is going to be legal we need to control all sources of production and distribution, tax it and make sure the criminals currently involved in distribution get hung out to dry. |

Of coarse they dont feel pain, they are fucking stoned. Their appetite gets better because they have the munchies. I think most of the other results are placebo effect or being so fucking stoned they dont know what is going on. I mean why dont you just give them a lobotomy, then they wont have to worry about whatever diseases they have either.
"New research published today in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine confirms what many of us have suspected for some time: If you smoke a lot of weed — like a lot of it — it can potentially do permanent damage to your short-term memory. Professor Reto Auer of the University of Lausanne led a team of researchers who examined data on the marijuana habits of nearly 3,400 Americans over a 25-year period. At the end of the study period, the subjects took a battery of tests designed to assess cognitive abilities — memory, focus, ability to make quick decisions, etc. The study found that people who smoked marijuana on a daily basis for a long period of time — five years or more — had poorer verbal memory in middle age than people who didn't smoke, or who smoked less. This association remained even after researchers controlled for a variety of other factors known to affect cognitive performance, including age, education, use of other substances and depression. Auer and his team measured lifetime marijuana exposure in a fantastic new unit of measurement they call "marijuana-years." Essentially, if you smoke pot every day for a year, that equals one marijuana-year of use. Ditto if you smoke every other day for two years, or once a week for seven years." Its a fucking plant that grows out of the ground that various cultures around the globe have been using for thousands of years. Laced with something ? There is ZERO problems with this in the legal states with dispensaries.Researchers from the University of California at Davis became aware of this risk when a patient developed a rare and incurable fungal infection after using aerosolized marijuana – raw, blended marijuana inhaled as a mist. The patient ultimately died from a lung infection due to the fungus Mucor, according to his physician, Joseph Tuscano, MD, a professor of internal medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the university. The patient had been using medical marijuana while he was receiving chemotherapy and stem cell therapy for cancer. To test their concern, the researchers had DNA analysis conducted to identify the fungi and bacteria contained in the samples from medical marijuana dispensaries. Several different families of dangerous fungi were found in the medical marijuana, including Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and Mucor. Bacteria found in the marijuana samples included Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. http://www.empr.com/news/marijuana-bacteria-fungal-mucor-aerosolized-mist/article/638387/ A rare fungal infection has killed a California man undergoing cancer treatment and it’s believed he got it from medical marijuana, CBS Los Angeles reports. The treatment left the man’s immune system compromised, but his death still surprised doctors because he was relatively young and his cancer was beatable. He was using medical marijuana to fend off the treatment’s effects. After his death, testing of 20 medical marijuana samples from across the state found the vast majority were contaminated with dangerous bacteria and fungi. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/contaminated-medical-marijuana-pot-believed-to-have-killed-cancer-patient/ |

If the sick have access to weed then our children will have access to weed! It also violates my religion. All weed smokers need to be jailed. I'm fucking kidding. I don't like pot heads nor drunks. I am not big being high through the consumption of chemicals. That's my personality. I am not comfortable with drugs. I struggle (mentally) when I have to rely on drugs. Yet, I can easy induce a high using philosophy or adrenaline. That's how I'm wired. I think the federal government should crush states legalizing pot. We can't do that shit with machine guns. It is illegal. I support changing the federal laws. I think the bans on research are insanity. Even hemp is almost impossible to produce. That is plain stupidity. I do not use tobacco nor do I ingest alcohol. Yet, I see no reason to have the restrictions on Marijuana as we do. Shouldn't it be like alcohol and tobacco combined? Give it to the FDA for the medical regulations and the ATF for the commercial side. I am absolutely confident the tobacco industry can manage this far better than the states currently do marjuana. While I hate the smell of pot, I see no reason for the current status of marijuana. There are laws regarding public intoxication and DUI. That should cover marjuana if it were legalized, the same as the "for the children" laws prohibiting sales to minors. (I don't support those restrictions on A,T,F sales. If one can enlist at 18, EVERYTHING should be 18.) |

In 2014 over 47,000 people died from pharmaceutical drugs. A lot of those are prescribed for pain relief, the same thing legal marijuana is perscribed and used for. A lot of those deaths are overdoses. You CANNOT overdose on marijuana. Total number of overdose deaths from marijuana: ZERO More people died from contaminated food from the supermarket than your examples of fungal tainted weed. |
