Vampires, in Rice’s world, do not (or cannot) have sex. The relationship between Louis and Lestat is clearly a proxy for a sexual relationship. Lestat, in particular, cannot maintain intimate relationships with women… it’s a recurring theme. That includes his mother, the turned child, and the primal female. He has more success maintaining intimacy with males… because he’s fundamentally gay. Louis can’t seem to maintain any interest in females at all. I’m convinced Rice did this on purpose. I dated a gal a long time ago that loved gay (male) porn. She was also a big fan of Rice (and her “erotic” poetry, which was awful). It was always her thought that she and Rice shared the same “turned on by gay men” fetish. |
