A friend's father came over the wall in 1954. When the wall came down he was able to go back and visit long lost relatives.

Why are those fascist imperial dogs keeping that sweet innocent girl from returning to the socialist workers paradise of the G.D.R.?
Look that they have beaten her down to her knees and are making her beg for her life! Her country men are only there with their Russian "burp guns" to ensure she can "freely return". Of course it would suck to be her family, as they would shortly be forced off to "reeducation" for not informing on her plans to defect with "valuable state secrets" I'm sure the powers that be in the G.D.R. are thinking.... "Hummm... Maybe we could build a big wall to protect our innocent citizens against being kidnapped by those fascist bastards!"... B.T,W. Fuck Communism & Fuck the Democratic Party (they being one and the same) |

I'd like to think they're were East Germans who just put on a show for their superiors. Then again it's probably just as likely to end up in a gulag if you under performed.
Does anyone have any good book suggestions on the Iron curtain? |

Here is another defection pic I wonder if he was thinking "don't get your foot caught on the barbed wire" over and over again. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mb1aito7BV1ruhu7eo1_500.jpg ETA> The first East-German border guard to to defect to the West three days after the erection of the Berlin Wall. Aug. 15, 1961 View Quote That's my favorite picture of the era... A little history about this picture: On 15 August 1961, Schumann was sent to the corner of Ruppiner Straße and Bernauer Straße to guard the Berlin Wall on its third day of construction. At that time, the wall was only a low barbed wire fence. From the other side, West Germans shouted to him, "Komm' rüber!" ("Come over!"), and a police car pulled up to wait for him. Schumann jumped over the barbed wire fence and was promptly driven away from the scene by the West Berlin police. West German photographer Peter Leibing photographed Schumann's escape. His picture has since become an iconic image of the Cold War era. The scene, including Schumann's preparations, has also been filmed on 16-mm film from the same perspective. Schumann was later permitted to travel from West Berlin to the main territory of West Germany, where he settled in Bavaria. He met his wife Kunigunde in the town of Günzburg. Sadly, he commited suicide in June of 1998 due to a terrible bout of depression... |
