This footage from a Russian air show crash is pretty incredible. I dont know what went wrong in the plane but the pilot has definitely lost control of the jet. It looks like he does his best to maneuver away from the crowds but in the end he cant prevent the crash. I hope everyone was ok.

Looks like he gave his life so others would not die. A brave man.

+1 I don't see any signs of him ejecting. |

Su-27 Crash at Lvov Air Show Is Post-Soviet Ukraine's Worst Tragedy
Front page / 29.07.2002 Source: Final figures released indicate that 83 people died and 199 were injured as a result of a disaster at the Sknilov aerodrome near Lvov, in which an Ukrainian Air Force Su-27 taking part in an air show crashed into the crowd. The tragedy occurred on Saturday at 12:45 local time, when the plane, which was performing an advanced manoeuvre, suddenly began to lose height and plunged into spectators. Both pilots managed to eject. The catastrophe in Sknilov is the worst in post-Soviet Ukraine's short history. The press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that 18 bodies remain unidentified due the seriousness of the injuries they received. Criminal proceedings have been launched against the pilots of the Su-27. Ukrainian Defence Minister Vladimir Shkidchenko immediately tendered his resignation to President Leonid Kuchma after the disaster. A day of mourning has been declared in Ukraine today. The presidents of Russia, France, Georgia and Moldavia, as well as the German Chancellor and the Council of Europe have offered their condolences. english.pravda.ru/cis/2002/07/29/33358.html The crew ejected safely (Soviet fighters have a superb auto-eject system). The Pilot was jailed for 14 years and the Co-pilot got 8 years… ANdy |

Right at the end of the clip you can see a very brief glimpse of a parachute. |

Thanks for the link Vito. |

No you've got it backwards. In Russia, they schedule plane crashes and everyone shows up hoping that an airshow might break out. |

What is that at 5:30? I think I've seen that before. It looks strange in an awesome way. |

Russia, and the former Soviet Union, have the best air shows.
|
|
'Cause they're allowed to do crazy crap that would get a pilot here grounded. |
|
|
Lol, I think a SU-27 is the Russian Lawn Dart |
||
|
Nah.... the Su-31 (at about the 7 minute mark in the video) is nicer (or at least the pilot is anyway :) ) |

|
wow I would like to know more about the pilots being jailed and why
|
|
The plane got REALLY close to the cameraman in the second angle from the first link. I think I would have dropped the camera.

here ya go… Air show disaster pilots jailed Friday, June 24, 2005; Posted: 2:01 p.m. EDT (18:01 GMT) LVIV, Ukraine -- A military court in Ukraine has sentenced the pilots whose plane smashed into a crowd at a 2002 air show to up to 14 years in prison. Seventy-seven people were killed when the pilots' Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet hit the ground and exploded near Lviv, western Ukraine. More than two dozen children were among the victims. The two pilots whose plane caused the world's worst air show disaster ejected and survived. A court in the town, about 550 kilometers (330 miles) from the capital, Kiev, on Friday found the two pilots as well as three military officials guilty of failing to fulfil orders, negligence and violating flight rules, according to Reuters. An investigating commission ruled the pilots had tried to pull off a risky maneuver at too low an altitude. They also singled out commanders and show organizers for poor preparations and failing to ensure safety during the show on July 27, 2002. Pilot Volodymyr Toponar was sentenced to 14 years in prison, and his co-pilot Yuriy Yegorov was sentenced to eight years. Toponar was also ordered to pay 7.2 million hryvna ($1.42 million; €1.18 million) in compensation to victims. Yegorov must pay 2.5 million hryvna, Interfax reported. The court also sentenced two commanders of the 14th Aviation Corps, the pilots' unit, to six years in prison, and the unit's head of flight security to four years. They were also ordered to pay compensation. The crew's main flight trainer was acquitted for lack of evidence, Reuters said. Toponar had earlier denied responsibility for the deaths, according to Interfax. He claimed technical problems and a faulty flight plan were to blame. Toponar said after the verdict that he would appeal his sentence to Ukraine's supreme court. The disaster prompted a major shakeup in the ranks of the ex-Soviet state's military and all fighter jet flights to be suspended for nearly two weeks. http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/06/24/ukraine.airshow/ |

There are some spectacular hi-res stills of that crash floating around on the net (I wish I had links to them). One hell of a crash to catch on film. ETA: That second video is some seriously cool shit. Russians make some pretty mean airplanes. |

In Soviet Russia, Air shows YOU!

Ummm huhh.... |

Probably didn't compensate for his altitude. That caused the Thunderbird crash a few years ago.

Looks like he just freaked out and tried to pull his way out. He didnt have enough altitude or airspeed to pull it off. A/C problem my ass, thats just plain pilot error. On a side note, those eastern bloc guys dont get a lot of flying time. On deployment to poland, I got to hang out with the Pol Mig-29 and Su22 pilots and they only had a total of 500 to 800 hrs flying time total with their top pilot having only 2000. Shit Im just a 24yr old civilan pilot and have more time than the majority of their pilots. They only fly once every 2 weeks... These guys werent fresh from pilot training either, 30 and 40 somethings. Most of our pilots have more than they do just in the F-16.

Nice to see that Bereviev are still making seaplanes. Seems that they're the only people still in the conventional waterbomber market. (Drop foam. Land on nearest water, refill, drop water, repeat). But did you catch the bombload from the Platypus? That's a mud-mover that carries a world of hurt.
Must try and track down the video again of the Su-27 that did a belly landing because the pilot forgot to lower his gear. They craned it up, lowered the wheels, set it down, and it flew home. NTM |

I believe the F-16s were to replace the now-deleted MiG-21s and Su-22s, but the -29s were to be retained in service for a while yet. Nice to see a different colour scheme though. Greece, Venezuela, Israel and evidently Poland I think are the only ones not to have the usual two-tone.

Seeing that F-16 photo reminds me of the F-16N's they flew at Top Gun for a while, at least until the Top Gun instructers managed to fly the wings off them and they had to be withdrawn from service. Those were painted up in European and Soviet schemes.

F14 and F-16N playing chase-ass… |

True. The 21's have all ready been decomissioned with the Su-22s in the next few years. The 29s are suposed to last for the next 10 years. Ive got close to 400 pics from when I was over there. They are on my other computer, so Ill post them when I can get home. This one my buddy took from one of our D models. (Unit Photographer) |

Oh damn no! I would be kissing my own ass goodbye. |
