An AR10/M14-sized rifle is a whole different beast than an AR-15, regardless of mag.

People* who say otherwise make me think they've never humped one further than the parking lot to the firing line

*If you're a huge bastard who doesn't mind carrying a .308 all day every day, great, but the advantages of a lighter, more compact rifle should still be immediately obvious.

Just curious

Note: caliber question, not platform

Because it makes a great coyote killer and state law only allows 5 rounds when hunting anyway.

Never hear of groundhogs, prairie dogs, other vermin/varmints?  The round is well suited to hunting or eliminating such pests.  And why would anyone care about such trivial matters?

Because he is assuming the only motivation for owning them is for stopping power in a self defense or hunting engagement.

That is a narrow view.

I think the question is why use a small caliber. If you only get 10 rounds why not .308.

Not so much assuming, as asking for some of the other motivations

Completely agree and have hunted them many times, but my prairie dog gun does not have a 16" lightweight barrel

Well, collecting would be mine.  I like to have as close to the .mil versions of various weapons as I can get within the laws of my state and my budget.

It's commercially available.

Also, I have enough grandfathered magazines that the stupid law really doesn't apply in my case.

Because will not comply. Let's be honest about it. Ever shot in Cali before? Lots of Pmags.

I live in a free state, but would consider a .458 Socom if I were in a ban state.

Because I can still buy preban USGI thirty rounders for around $20 a piece. And because 223/556 is a most plentiful rounds everywhere I look.

Low recoil, plentiful, lightweight (carry more), and it makes varmints 'splode.

There is little correlation between what unconstitutional state laws prohibit and what citizens actually have.  The issue is that, like much of the repressed world, they have to own them in secrecy.  I live in a state without mag limits, but would not give up any of my property regardless of where I was living. (TL; DR = will not comply).

Ammo is fairly cheap.
Ammo is readily available.
Good variety of ammo.
I had it before the ban.
It is a caliber I know and trust.
No one cares about or enforces the ban.
Wyoming and KS are both within three hours of my house.
"Rebuild kits" are advertised openly and sold.  Sometimes assembled.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

We have a ban but I have mags and Betas.  I will keep the grandfathered shit I can.

Because me having an AR is the opposite intended result of those laws.

Because I owned the mags and the guns before the mag ban?

Because no one here follows the mag ban, and no one here enforces it because it's unconstitutional?

If you live in a state with a speed limit, why do you own a car that can do more than 75mph?
