Here is a close up look at the clamp on scope mount:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMncoOE7_fQ&list=UUopC5z_f-m4J-jYF1TC0-jA

I was able to get away with millet angle loc med height rings and a vortex viper 3-9x40.  There is just barely enough clearance between the objective and the rear iron sites.  The setup works very well with gp11.  I have no problems hitting steel plate targets at 750 yards.

Of all my milsurps... I think the k31 is my favorite.. possibly besting my Garand

Thinking about getting another one.. after I pick up a k11

That mount strikes me as really weird.

The first part I find odd is the 3/8" rail. I don't think I've ever seen that used on anything centerfire.

The other thing is the right side offset. How does that work for a right-handed shooter? Are you forced to shoot off the left, or do you lean a little further over the rifle?

St. Marie scope mount FTW.  The clamp on does not harm the rifle and will hold a zero. Use my scoped rifle for hunting.

The reason for the 3/8" rail is because a standard weaver/picatinny rail would be too wide, making it impossible to use stripper clips and also interfere with ejection.

The right side offsite is not bad at all.. hardly noticeable for me when shooting and I am right handed, just lean a little further.  The trick is getting the scope mounted forward enough so that the eye relief doesn't crowd your length of pull.

I used an S&K Insta-Mount on mine, with a Leupold IER scope.

Have done a little bit of handloading for it, using the Wolf/Privi brass.  Was told that neck-only resizing is a bad idea due to the poor camming power of the bolt.  Dies are full-length Lee.

I brought my K31 home today, but I haven't had time for pics.

I'm pretty happy with what I see so far. Looking at the bolt and the receiver, this rifle looks very well crafted. The stock has definitely been bumped around a bit, but I wouldn't expect anything else from a relatively early production gun.

I hate import marks, but Simpson's has probably the best I've ever seen. It's small, and it's clean.

I gotta get a Beech stocked rifle.

The French MAS 49-56 buttpads fit very well and add some needed LOP.

I wish someone would make a good freefloat polymer stock for these

1) I can't add much other than you may discover that it's the best bargain you've ever come across. For the price, you will never get any rifle as well-made. If you get something as well-made for 3x what you paid for this, you'll consider yourself lucky.

2) What's with all the talk of scope mounts. Have you kids completely lost the ability to shoot with irons? Enjoy this rifle for what it is!

The Limbsaver slip-on pads also work pretty well, if you are so inclined.

Like this...

I've shot the K-31 using the St. Marie clamp-on mounts, and it's not particularly awkward--though you are using a semi chin-mount(as opposed to a proper cheekweld)

I agree with an earlier poster that iron sights are great and very effective--but the argument for a scope sort of grounds itself in the you-can't-hit-what-you-can't-see thing.

Enjoy your rifle.

Awesome choice.

(Rifle below is scoped with a Weaver Grand Slam Tactical)

ETA:  Reloading notes for the K-31 with PRVI brass:

...We found a very accurate load at 42 Grains IMR 4064 (168 grain Sierra Matchking) but like yours it was hitting at a totally different POI from his GP-11 Zero (3" low and 3" right from GP-11 Zero).

We kept working up in half-grain increments and the groups marched up and around progressively counter-clockwise then slid back perfectly into his GP-11 Zero. At 45.2 Grains the group tightened beautifully at the exact same POI as GP-11 and chronoed at 2600 fps.

Every rifle is different, I guess, but it is well worth exploring up past the first accuracy peak if you haven't done so already.

Good luck.

I don't like import marks, but this has got to be among the best I've ever seen.

I like the diopter sights at that link.

I had them on my blond K-31. They are nice. The front sight takes some standard type of insert, so you can replace it if you want. I also had the clamp on brake. I don't think recoil is all that bad anyway.

I got a different rifle for that sort of shooting.

I think I'll keep my K31 as is.

Is identifying age all in the serial number, or is there something else?

What do the other proofs mean?

The serial number indicates the year.

You'll find a ton of info at the Swiss Rifles website, especially in the Forum.

You're going to love your K31. Now start looking for a 1911 Long Rifle.

I love mine but it shoots different than anything else I have ever shot.

When you take up the trigger slack you better be ready because it is going to go boom with very little additional pressure.

Have you ever shot a Finn captured Mosin Nagant?

I have one, and I found the trigger on that rifle in particular to be tricky to anticipate.

I shot it for the first time yesterday.

There were no 25yd lanes available, so I had to start at 50yds.

These two targets were stapled up together. On the left is my Marlin 336, on the right is the K31.

The trigger is nice, and the sights are pretty good for open irons.

The recoil wasn't as bad as some of the claims I've read, but 20-30 rounds is probably about the most I'd shoot it in one go.

I'm happy I bought it and the two cases of GP11.

Nice

Looks kinda weird with the web sling. You should get a proper leather one for it. It doesn't work better, but it looks right.

Sling is behind rifle in pic.

After shooting it, it feels like a good two stage trigger to me.

I guess I am not used to a really good trigger but I really haven't fired my K31 enough to get used to it either.

I am more used to the trigger on my old 06. I don't know what the trigger pull is but I know just the right amount of squeeze I need to put on it.

Back on topic though I REALLY love my K-31. I love it WAY more than any AR I have ever fired.
