I'm so redneck I thought it was a term for a buck too small to shoot.

It was a VN war term, but DINK came around as this version in the 80s. Yuppies, DINKs, that timeframe.

Being a DINK is fun and responsibility free, but pretty shallow. It allows the couple to be children for an extended period of time.
Having one or more kids a kid will cause you to grow up and evaluate things from a very different perspective. |

I worked for a retail chain, that was our main demographic for our upscale stores.
We were using that term in the 90's. |

Yeah, the term has certainly been around longer than the acronym. Whenever I did something stupid (by his estimation, not mine) my grandfather would yell and call me a "dink."

I have heard the term for 25-30 years. Both the slur and the acronym.
For the record my wife and I are DINKs. |

I use every racial slang term out there and I have never used that one, only heard it used in movies and some books. I’m unfamiliar with it being applied to dual income.
I’m not racist fwiw, I am just politically incorrect AF. |

I remember hearing it on Ft. Bragg in the 80s, and it didn't refer to income. I'm pretty sure it was used in some movies around that time as well.

Quoted: I guess I’m not old enough - they were always childless couples (many by choice, some by fate) View Quote My theory is since it's difficult to raise kids on one income and two careers plus kids is definitely not ideal, dinks are perceived as somehow getting away with something. And some people don't like it when others have what they perceive as a good deal. So, you end up with people manifesting this weird dislike for dinks because they're not suffering enough. |
