At one time I had quite the collection of Levers.
I kept two.
Marlin 39A - .22
and Marlin 1895 - 45-70 both are amazing guns.

My primary levergun is a Marlin 1895SBL (.45-70).

First, it just feels amazing - like what a modern working gun should feel like. The caliber is more than I’ll ever need around where I live, but I’ve never been one to go for half measures.

.45-70 is a breeze to reload, though finding bullets locally was an issue at first. I bought my local bullet producer some 300gr .45 molds for exact bullet I wanted (~$200), in exchange for the first few hundred bullets that came out of them. I have about 2,500 now ready to load. I use a Lee Loader, with a wooden mallet and a piece of 2x4. Easy-peasy, and relaxing.

I told my wife that it was my “Pandemic Gun”. If someone breaks in to the house during a plague outbreak, I want them dropped on the spot with all of their potentially infectious fluids on the other side of them, as opposed to crawling whatever direction and leaking all over the place in the process.

I have several .22s. Without opening safes and tracking them all down, I know I have:

* 3x Marlin 39A
* 2x Browning BL-22
* 1x Browning BL-22 Micro

I got mine because it’s pretty legal almost everywhere, too. I think we figured out about 46 states, and even some of the ban states are still good.

Would I reach for it before my SBR 300bo at home ? No. But I could hand it to my wife or 6 year old in a pinch for some fire support.

Also it’s cool as hell. Old guns have style and feel that checks off some cool boxes. Yes a Sig 365 holds more rounds than a 1911 and weighs less but damnit the feel is all wrong.

Marlin 336 30-30...was my Grandpa's, then my Dad's, now its mine, and one day it will go to my Grandson.

Marlin 444ss in (you guessed it) .444...my go to for hunting.

Henry H001M .22 Magnum...always wanted a lever .22 Mag.

.444 in action.

I would jump in by buying a Marlin 336 in 30/30. Almost everyone ends up with one, so in your case begin with one.
357's are a great caliber as well, mine is a Taylors Lever Scout. Everyone has their opinions on what is best.

Isn't there something about the 336 where one should pay attention to a serial number range? Or maybe it's a date of manufacture range? As in, older equals better and newer (can possibly) mean shoddy QC? I know for the most part Marlin does a good thing, but didn't they go through some sketchy times? I'm only going off what I remember from internet scuttlebutt some years ago...

Basically from 2011 on, the QC issues were real, very hit or miss.

If it does not have JM stamped on the barrel just in front of the receiver then it not a real Marlin.

I loaded up some 500 grain solids with 45 grains of 3031 for my 1895.  I feel like they'd go through and through a black bear the long way.  Otherwise I just buy lead Missouri Bullet Company or Acme for that and my 94 30-30.  My 94 is kind of salty but I keep it around because it's handy and light and legal just about anywhere.

I have all sorts of common and classic semiauto's, a few bolt guns, handguns of many a flavor... but I don't have a lever-action. I remember when I was a kid I got to manhandle my Grandpa's brass-paneled .30-30 with this huge scope on it, and there was something that was just magical about it. The action was so buttery, you could feel every ratchet and clank of the mechanism as it was working, but it was so smooth, all gliding together like the parts of a well-oiled bank vault door.

I mostly just target shoot. I don't hunt anymore. I love the idea of big bore like a .45-70 mostly just because I love big bore anything. But I'd never put the round to use as it's intended.

I also love the idea of having that .30-30 again just because it is such an American classic, an heirloom gun I can pass onto my family once I get croaked.

Being able to whip out a shitload of .357 or .44 at watermelons and soda cans also sounds like a blast.

What do you got and why do you have it?

Man that pic brings back memories. When my dad passed my brother inherited his Savage 99 in .300 Savage. I took a few handguns and a Mossberg .410 bolt shotgun.
Not gonna lie, it wasn't very comfortable to shoot the twenty or so rounds that I did, but Jesus On High was it both devastating and freakishly, repeatably precise. Found out just about six months ago my big bro sold it locally for $250 a few years ago.
I wanted to cry.

Technically a lever gun was my very first gun since Dad bought a Winchester 94 .30-30 for me the day I was born. I've always kind of preferred them over most anything else for hunting.

Current line up-

Marlin's in .41 magnum, .30-30, .22 and .218 Bee

Savage model 99's in .250-3000 and .300 Savage

Winchester model 94 .30-30

I'm still waiting for a Marlin .45 Colt and a Guide gun in .45-70

@SmokeEater2

I like it, so far I’ve only put about 20 rounds through it, but it’s really a smooth shooter.
Pretty good accuracy too, it’d be a great brush rifle, and from the way it shoots I’d be comfortable taking a deer at 100 yards with just the buckhorn sights.
Fit and finish are on par with a Winchester, and it cost about half of the price of one.

I've got a Marlin 444 set up as a scout system, backup ghost rings and quick detach rings.  Good brush gun but I shoot the gong off the deck with it mostly.
Also a Marlin in 44 mag, and a Henry big boy steel in 38 (just range toys for my steel targets, cans, etc..

I picked up this gem of an 1968 Marlin in 35 Remington, it turned out to be a real shooter with a 4x Leupold on it.
First load I tried in it

I have two.  a .44 Rossi with 20 inch octagon barrel, that was problematic.  it took a while to smooth it out & keep the mag tube from coming out. I have had it about 10 years.   its pretty good now.
the other is a .357 16 inch I bought new last January. it worked pretty good, but I used what I learned with the .44 to slick it out.  its a good shooter & lots of fun.  I use SNS powder coated bullets in both of them.
the .357 had a 3/4 large loop lever that I didn`t take to, but even a regular lever was $160 if you could find one, so I checked with the manufacturer.  well, it seems they sell a regular lever for $35, but its gold. they have no plans to sell a black one.  yep, my black short Rossi is now wearing a gold lever.  went right in, no fitting required & it looks kinda snappy.  faster to cycle now too.
if I found one I`d be very tempted by a JM marked Marlin 1894 CB in .357.
I have 2 revolvers in .44, a 629 & a Ruger Vaquero 5.5 inch, & 2 in .357.  I plan to sell one off (Security Six) to help fund an Uberti El Patron Grizzly Paw in .357.   that would give me two lever guns, each one with a S&W revolver & a single action in the same calibers.

I've got a Henry .22 and have wanted a Marlin .45-70 GS Guide Gun for years. But I don't get the blacktical railed, scoped, suppressed lever guns. I mean I'm all for people getting what they want, but a tactical lever gun seems like a /0 error to me. Is it mostly just a people who live in commie coastal states thing? I've got 7 ARs that would be deployed long before I resorted to using a lever gun. I like lever guns for the old school vibe, and only irons. But I do understand having a scope on there for people who want to hunt with them, though most lever gun cartridges don't routinely get used at distances that demand scopes. A .30-30 would be an exception. And the Model 71 .348 Winchester that I stupidly sold could have been scope-worthy, though I never would have messed with that gun. Anyways, I'm sure feathers will be ruffled by my opinion. But I'm sure that I'm far from alone in my old school vibe.

I like to hunt for hogs at night.  If I am doing a hiking hunt with NV, it is hard to beat a Marlin dark.  I have an IR laser/illuminator on it.  The 44 mag is about getting the most damage with the lightest gun.  Since I am doing hiking hunts - the ranges are not all that far, 50 yards freehand is about all I trust myself to.

I like the Dark because I think it might not glint moonlight as bad as SS.  I like the X-rail, as it gives me a place to mount the laser.  I have 2x optics on them, which is good enough during the day - and gets around needing to change out the sights to make them suppressor ready.  Plus there are not many scopes that are lighter than a fixed 2x.

Oh, that's nice. I got the levergun itch a few months ago. Something I don't have. Now, I have been buying ammo for a gun I don't own. I bought about 1,000 rounds of .45-70 in anticipation of a .45-70 GOVT. MARLIN 1895SBL 45-70 GOVT 5+1 STAINLESS 18". I just wish it had a threaded barrel.

I've looked at Marlin, too. Seems like nothing is actually buyable right now.
